  1. UCSD recently lost some pretty good people in AP, from what I remember. They also had huge funding problems. My understanding, however, is that they're trying really hard to get their s*** in order, and I would not assume that the down-fall (in AP/CP) will continue. AHL, I would also look at placement, where UCSD seems to beat Wisconsin. This might be more relevant to us than the reputation ranking of USNWS. UCSD actually publishes a full placement statistic, also specifying who the advisors are, which is great information, I believe. That said, I don't think you can go wrong with either
  2. UCSD offered a combination of both. Double dipping doesn't work well with my fellowship, unfortunately. See also PM
  3. Interesting Q, jeudepaume: I didn't respond to my letter yet, which was clearly a form letter. Will be responding by Monday to get some clarification/discuss funding, as my fellowship isn't factored in at all at this point. I still have to try and figure out all the intricacies of the funding notice (and my fellowship), though!
  4. Doesn't work that way, unfortunately. F-1 and J-1 visa holders cannot claim residency status. See here: http://www.sjsu.edu/gape/prospective_students/residency/
  5. Thanks! I'm just a worrier, that is who I am. BTW, I can finally let go not applying to Berkeley, since I much prefer UCSD! Saved me a couple bucks, I do not see any world, in which I would have gone to Bekeley over UCSD (funding provided).
  6. I'm not quite sure, though! Non-resident tuition waiver still leaves 12000 in resident tuition and fees, in the worst case scenario (+health insurance). We really need answers! Sucks that they released decisions on Friday... ;-)
  7. That looks amazing! If that was the case, I would be pretty much covered, if I finish on time!
  8. Thank you! I was starting to feel really down, though, to be honest, NYU probably isn't/wasn't the best fit for me, and my PoI turns out to be almost 70 there, which would explain why he might not want to take on new students. The email seems to indicate that we'd still have to pay tuition, though I will definitely be talking to the department about it. I've got most of tuition covered for years 1 and 2 with my outside fellowship, so the least they should be able to do is transfer my first-year award to year three. Does anyone know what happens with tuition once you get up to candidacy at UCSD? I'm not sure I'll be at UCSD in March, unfortunately. Would be great to meet you, though! You've been doing great this cycle, congrats!
  9. Thanks. I believe, however, that the different grad school rules between UCSD and Berkeley have been mentioned before. Well, we'll see! Still waiting on other programs as well!
  10. Congrats to you, too. I'm glad it isn't only me! I was really hoping one acceptance would clear up things, but it just turned them more weird/mixed up. I'm still thinking of how to phrase any email reply, though!
  11. Claiming a UCSD acceptance as well. However, I'll have to talk to them about finances, since the letter I got states that I am expected to establish California residence in my second year. Any internatials having the same problem? I am hoping (hopeful) that I will be able to talk to them about having my external fellowship pay for years 1-2 of my stay, and them then using part of the savings for fees and tuition (in years 3-5). Otherwise, I don't think I'll be able to enroll. My funding package is lower than the numbers floating around here, though, and includes 5 years of TA-ing (1st: 25%, 2-5:50%). I'm assuming I can get out of year 1 and 2, because of my fellowship, otherwise it looks intense!
  12. That wasn't what I meant at all. I just thought the wording was odd. What if they get 14 people this year, e.g.? Then current students will know for sure that they had a much higher yield than hoped/anticipated. Probably not a big deal, but just though it was an odd way to put it. I think I'm just overthinking everything in this process at this point, and I didn't even apply to wash... Anyway, regardless of how many they actually sent offers to, everyone who got one can be really proud. Everyone else: don't lose hope just yet! It's still early!
  13. Why would they publish a target number, though? Seems unwise, if they happen to have a higher yield this year or something?
  14. ? What do you mean? My understanding was that they offered spots to 12 people.
  15. Congrats to all the Washington admissions. 6% admission rate, pretty competitive!
  16. Congrats! You rock!
  17. Thanks a bunch!
  18. Congrats to the Cornell admit!
  19. Did you hear? I think they only released interdisciplinary decisions so far...
  20. Just got a reply from Harvard: "We hope to have decisions available during the first week of March." Seems like the spreadsheet was right about Harvard Government. Not holding my breath on that one anyway...
  21. That explains why there havent been more notifications. I was thinking of applying there, but decided to go for political science instead... I hope you get good news soon!
  22. So sorry to hear! Was that the interdisciplinary or the disciplinary program?
  23. Wonder when they'll start sending out rejections...
  24. I finally want to get at least one acceptance, so I can be truly happy about my scholarship! UCSD seems most realistic at this point, I would say, they historically released acceptances on the first Th/Fr in February. Michigan might or might not. I'm wondering if NYU informed all WL applicants, or just those they interviewed?
  25. I'll just bulletpoint it: India, rat, glue trap, not dead, stone, dead. Nightmares with red eyes!
