Canadian Political Science Programs, Fall 2014 Admission
IRToni replied to cosmokramer's topic in Political Science Forum
I applied to UBC. Maybe next week? -
Some of us are hoping for Columbia, though tomorrow or Friday are more likely apparently. Noone else that I know of!
-
Definitely! Not a winter person at all, so I'm definitely tempted to go to SD over Michigan, even if I do end up getting in.
-
UMich WL people: Mary Gallagher said she will update us (at the latest) at the end of March to tell us how it looks like (whether they're likely to accept people off the WL or not). Also, if we get admitted, we get a full five-year funding package.
-
Unfortunately, you didn't apply to Columbia! Maybe they'll still send out notifications today?

Hi everyone, I'm an international student hoping to do a PhD in the US soon. I have, however, trouble understanding the US tax and insurance system. It seems like my TAship and stipend will be taxed, but how do I find out the rates? Also, which insurance schemes are necessary (I'm thinking liability insurance etc.) to live in the US, and where could I purchase these? Lastly, if I wanted to start saving up for retirement, how would I go about doing that? I'd like to compare US rates to those in my country, as I have no idea where I want to end up. Thanks in advance, IRToni

Minnesota sent out some results, Emory as well, UCA, USC, UT-Austin. None of them seem to necessarily be done! UC Davis sent out results, Pitt seems to be done, Boulder seems to be done. OSU is done, I believe. UCSB also sent out quite a lot of notifications already.
-
NYU announced some results, we're just trying to figure out (sent emails) whether they only have rejections to send out. Wisconsin-Madison seems to be done, Duke sent out results, Chicago sent out some. WUSTL and University of Washington both sent out at least some results.

Loving your signature, FYI!
-
Emails. I'm awkward at phone calls even on good days... In addition, I can choose to only check my emails if I am ready for bad news (i.e. alone etc.), while a phone call can take me by surprise. Lastly, I have no idea how articulate I could be on the phone after an acceptance...
-
What about internationals? Did they call internationals as well?
-
I still haven't heard either. Assuming a rejection at this point!
-
Columbia and Stanford both this or next week! I wish my non-US schools could get their things in order so I could start making decisions...
-
I think this is hwat they did. They deducted the TAship (years 1+2) from my offer, but are still offering the same stipend for years 1 and 2.
-
Thanks, xuejia! I'm currently set to receive 37k the first year (including summer). I'll either ask them to transfer some of that to year 2 (3,4,5), or make that a more informal arrangement, since I don't wanna splurge first year, and then be a pauper. No idea how they came to their decisions, though!

I just got a revised offer letter from UCSD. Tuition fully taken care of (UCSD is willing to cover the difference between my fellowship and their tuition), first two years without teaching, but departmental stipend on top of fellowship. At least some great news, after today's half-blood bath!

Congrats on Michigan!

I think a current student here mentioned to expect something by the end of the week? It seems that they sent out admits first last year, and then rejects a week later, so they might have meant that everyone will hear by the end of February, while some will hear earlier (?) ETA: Looking through previous year's results makes me kind of hopeful. While some clustering is visible, most people seem to get accepted at only some of the top programs, and it doesn't really seem to follow a clear pattern!
-
Those accepted to UMich: Mind sharing funding details (also via PM), if available?
-
Congrats everyone who got accepted to Michigan and Princeton today! Two amazing programs!
-
Definitely agree with TMCB here!
-
TMCB means Michigan, FYI!
-
I spent a month thinking that. It isnt over till the last rejections in your inbox. however, I was told that he people who matter (your profs) know how random the process is/ can be, and that telling them shouldn't be an embarassement. As for myself, my profs that know about the American system basically said: " you won't get in everywhere, but you have a shot at the schools you're applying to, so they know the deal!

Cycles not over yet, so don't give up hope just yet! On the other hand, I am very happy I did not spend tons of money applying to more programs, as I would prefer my acceptance to all programs I would have applied to. I also seem to have hit just the right brackets of schools, with one rejected, one WL and one admit confirmed at this point! The WL really put things back into perspective for me.
