Figures. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either school, they're both amazing! If you wanna choose one school for personal reasons, that's fine. Just try to think of what happens if the personal reasons disappear. Will you regret having chosen school X or Y over Z? I honestly don't think any of the schools you're considering would be cause for this kind of thing, but I also believe its important to think about this as well!

The New UCSD hier would be perfect for your interests, but NYU is the stronger methods department. I am less interested in developing methods, and much more so in applying them to specific interests, which is why I want good methods training, but don't necessarily want/need NYU's emphasis. With my regional interest, UCSD is a lot stronger than NYU, also in my substantive interest, but I definitely see where you're coming from! Definitely holding out hope for your WLs! I'm not sure whether I'd choose Michigan or UCSD, if I get into Michigan off the WL...

Yeah, there are quite a lot of people in the discipline working until a late age. Still, some of them might be hesitant to take on new students, since it will be another 5-7 years till we defend! Lots can change in-between.

Those were two separate things, my PoI's age and my mixed-methods agenda. While I think most places within the Top 20 are open to Mixed-methods, I specifically detailed some qualitative stuff. Places like NYU (and of course Rochester) are, I would say, less open to this kind of agenda than most other top-20 places. Moreover, I just guessed that these might be contributing factors, it's entirely possible/plausible that my app just wasn't strong enough overall, which is why I have not heard from NYU as of now. Might have been just me trying to feel better about my application/chances at other places

Nope. I'm assuming my PoI pushing 70, and my wish to do mixed-methods ousted me. It's all good, though, as I would prefer UCSD to NYU anyway, since UCSD is a much better fit! You considering staying another 5 years in SD?

Waiting on 7 more programs (including a presumed rejection from NYU).

Good, so I'm not the only one! I was starting to worry... Ready for this cycle to be over!

Stanford doesn't have classes, Columbia seems to be open, except for the medical center.

Last year, they came out mid-March, I think, according to the results board, while PhD Government decisions should be out the beginning of March. They are really late!

Sent you a PM! -
Wouldn't say that yet. Last year, there were 9 acceptances in the first wave, so far, we have 5 this year. Also, last year, they accepted some people a couple weeks later! Yep, congrats to all the second-rounders!
-
Congrats! The first acceptance is such a relief, isn't it? Extremely happy for you!
-
We were hoping for Columbia today, which still might happen. Otherwise, early next week!
-
Are you theory? Just speculation based on your name ! Congrats!

Congrats! Another cycle-crusher!

Congrats! You're crushing this cycle so far!

I can't help you with most concerns, just wanted to alert you to thestudentroom.co.uk, which has a postgrad forum. I think they might be better able to help you there, as most of the people here are applying in North America exclusively. -
Congrats to the recent admits (Maryland, Stony Brooke)!

I would definitely include a funding Q. "UCSB is one of my top choices, and I look forward to learning more about your program. However, my ability to attend any PhD program depends also on funding information. Could you let me know what kind of funding is available, and when I can expect to hear back about my funding offer?" Something along those lines. Be honest and polite is what I have heard, and it served me well so far in all my communications!

To be fair, they are different programs. I doubt that programs would switch (back) to letters, if they haven't doen that in previous years. The trend seems to be going another direction!

Help me understand the US tax and insurance system
IRToni replied to IRToni's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Thanks, guys, this is indeed helpful! I looked through the insurance policy, and it had something called a "co-insurance" of 3000 US$ a year. Is that the maximimum out-of-pocket amount? I also noticed that it says it covers 80% of the cost of surgery, e.g. Would that be that I have to pay 20% of such a surgery, but max. $3000 a year? Also, do you know if all insurances go by calendar year? -
Harvard said first week of March, which would be in line with previous years' results. UChic seems to have sent out admissions and WLs already. Whether they just haven't gotten around to rejections yet, or they're still waiting on something is anyone's guess, I believe.

Just heard back from NYU: "We should be alerting you with our final decision shortly. Thank you for your patience." Pretty sure their shortly and my shortly are not the same timeframe, but what can you do?
-
Columbia is open today, according to their website! They could thus be releasing decisions today???
