  1. My school's favorite punishment was writing a letter of apology to your parents for wasting their money by being "naughty"...
  2. Thanks for taking one for the team, and trying it! Those that read it: Isn't it fishy that they already have enrollment figures for 2014? Or is that 2013? That would mean that they accepted a lot less this year?
  3. British boarding schools (and also state schools, BTW) require everyone to wear that! My school was generous, we had one business casual day every term (3 a year!), and in 6th form (year 12 and 13/11 and 12), everyone was allowed to wear business casual (obviously on the business end of things, though!). I remember the fond days of having to tuck in my shirt whenever I saw a teacher, and being cited more than once for not tucking it in. I was also cited for not wearing white or black socks, for not wearing my blazer when the principal hadn't given us leave to, for an improperly tied tie etc. Good times!
  4. UBC (Canada) would also be a candidate for this week!
  5. Here! Assuming a rejection at this point... Ready to move on. What's happening with columbia, though?
  6. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toni
  7. Maybe I should start a poll? Who thinks I'm a girl? Who thinks I'm a guy? Something in-between?^^
  8. FYI: One of the professors that contaced me also evidently thought I was a guy...
  9. Everyone seems to think I'm a guy. Had this Q come up a couple of times , so figured I'd clarify without being too obvious/obnoxious about it! I don't mind either way, though!
  10. I think I'm scarred from my school experience in that regard. Went to boarding school in Britain, had to wear a checkered plaid skirt, a white dress shirt, a tie and a blazer every day... I also went to a German BS where we had to dress formally for dinner! So, when I have the choice, I prefer business casual (or even full-on casual).
  11. Me (a girl) was planning on a nice pair of pants (think either black jeans or slacks, no dress pants, though) or a skirt (not denim, classic cut, knee-length), a blouse/dress shirt, a sweater vest and/or a black blazer, also depending on weather. I usually feel like my mom in a full-on suit/costume, so prefer to mix-and match nice clothes that make me feel comfortable. Also, comfortable shoes (no heels), but no sneakers (though I'm usually always in sneakers)...
  12. Q (pure intellectual curiosity): Do you guys know about the current "Edathy-gate" in Germany? Just interested in knowing how far things travel, since many people actually know about Guttenberg
  13. Looks like another slow day? Sorry for the Chicago people! Why can't they just indorm all at once? It's like ripping a band-aid off! Mich and Princeton managed, why npt other schools?
  14. I have a similar problem with UCSD. I figure I'll ask, and the worst thing that can happen is that they'll say they won't be able to pay more!
  15. Do explain! Sounds intriguing!
  16. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you have already done some work on it. Getting scooped does happen, but if you're already 6 months along, chances are, you'll be the first to finish the project anyway, means you'll scoop them, and it will be their loss! You seem to have your advisor on your side, which is much more important than this student's approval. I might be more careful about sharing details with the specific student from now on, but aside from that, I don't think there's much you can do!
  17. Anyone willing to guess who's gonna destroy dreams today? I say Northwestern will clean up, and Columbia will start notifying! Any raises?
  18. I am very interested in all things math-y, but found I didn't enjoy studying it as much as just reading about interesting discoveries, trying to replicate proofs etc. It's one of those things I hate when I'm forced to do it, but love when I can choose to do it. Aside from that, I am also very interested in physics, basically finding out how everything works. I'm also super interested in linguistics, especially of languages I am learning, but also in general! I have many secondary interests, some of which I might be able to build into my studies/thesis (computer programming, big data stuff), but I also find that having outside-interests that I don't HAVE to do helps me stay on-task and motivated! There are also many grey zones of stuff that I am interested in, and that turns out to be useful for my studies/life, especially Chinese history/philosophy!
  19. What's the procedure for professors contacting you basically just to say they'd be interested in working with you, and they encourage you to accept their program's offer? Do you respond? If so, how?
  20. Lived in the spy headquarter of the world for a year, so...
  21. Might be Amsterdam as well, not quite sure. I just saw that it's not direct to Frankfurt (which seems strange to me), and that was it for me. I'll probably fly out to the Visiting days (though from Berlin), and will check in more detail for that! Thanks, though!
  22. No direct flight to Germany, though, meaning I'd likely take a train down to LA and the fly, or change in some city in Europe (they seem to go to London and The Hague?). Non-stop isn't such a huge concern for me, honestly. More frequency and speed! I highly doubt ill be able to afford non-stop anyway ^^
  23. FYI, in terms of flying back home every once in a while, East Coast would be much preferable to me. However, my research interests are in China, which makes West Coast better! Will have to figure it out once all results are in (of course, Europe would be even better for going home regularly...)
  24. What are your research interests, if I may ask? Good luck on Yale!
