I got accepted into Georgetown as well, and will be attending it. It's one of the top schools for applied linguistics, and 2 great professors from Hawaii will be teaching this semester there (big names in SLA). However, it really depends on you:

    1. Which school offers you a better package?
    2. Which school has faculty that match your prospective thesis better?
    3. Which school is closer to home/friends/family (if you are expecting to travel back and forth)?
    4. Which school has the better program in regards to the specific field you want to study?
    5. Which city is better for living (how will you be supporting yourself? Will you be able to afford housing, etc)?

All of these are questions which need to be addressed by you in order to make your decision. I can sit here and gloat about Georgetown, but that is because it's best for MY needs. It might not be the same for you, and I believe I saw in another thread that you were 99% sure about Columbia nonetheless, correct?

    Good luck!

Me! I will be doing SLA/Applied Linguistics, particularly Spanish and heritage speakers. There are some GREAT professors of SLA in Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon, UIUC, and UMD. I know UHawaii also has an excellent program. My mentor from my MA graduated from Georgetown Spanish Linguistics (where I will be attending) with SLA and she loved it.

What are you interested in doing, exactly? I am also very interested in conducting research with task-based teaching/learning and conversational interactions (I'm presenting my paper on precisely that this weekend in Boston at the AAAL).

If you're still interested, PM me to give you info on internships at the Center for Applied Linguistic in DC (I worked there last summer and loved it)!

Hi! I also applied to the applied linguistics department, and have not heard back. Since Dr. Mackey is on sabbatical this semester, someone else is doing the admissions, hence it's taking longer than usual.
    Just be patient!

As far as SLA programs, I received an offer from
Carnegie Mellon and someone else on this board received one from UMD. Did you apply there?

    Good luck!

So, in a futile attempt to get my mind off of the fact that I have not heard from ANY OTHER SCHOOL, I decided to start this topic. Feel free to chime in!

What has been the NERDIEST linguistic moment you've caught yourself in?

I would have to say that a top one for me is when I was teaching my 9th/10th graders grammar (English lit teacher), and one student asked whether the word "apple" in "apple pie" would be considered an adjective... to which I went off on a syntactic rant and drew trees all over the classroom! LOL

That, or when I began transcribing different words and explaining phonetics to prove to my honors students that "the thought" is NOT alliteration.

That, and having discussions with every friend that has a baby (wow, your baby is HOW OLD and is already producing interdentals?), or correcting my friends that complain about Spanglish being "bad Spanish"... yeah.

    I'm curious to hear yours!

So sorry to you all... but keep your heads up! I'm a firm believer that when one door closes, another one opens!

I believe that getting an internship will highly increase your chances. I know that for those of you doing applied linguistics, CAL (Center for Applied Linguistics) in DC has an excellent internship program (I did it last summer). That, or live abroad for a semester to really immerse yourself/acquire a new language to add under your belt. Or maybe teach for a year? That way, it also shows you are capable of becoming a TA/potential professor?

This wait it KILLING ME. Still no response from ANYWHERE!

For UIUC, did you get accepted into the SIP program or general linguistics?

Applied linguistics is the other one, and I think computational.

According to the results survery, Harvard should be next week (the first week of February). Georgetown is all over the place, and it's the one that I'm anxiously waiting for. :-/ This is killing my nerves!!!!
