I'm packing everything I own into my Mustang. Unfortunately, it all fits. I will be moving into an empty apartment and hopefully furniture shopping in one weekend.

A year off has been great for me too. It is good to be thrown into the real world for a while. You get the chance to be disappointed and like me, occasionally hungry. But with everything comes a great snese of pride when you find something and begin to make money. I would hate to say it but making money is great. It really changes your perspective on what things are woth and what you are willing to finance for graduate school. Plus you really get the chance to witness why it is such a powerful factor in the world and gain an appreciation for people who striked and fought for better wages.
I say pursue your interest. It is absolutely the only way you will ever be successful professionally and personally.

Wonderful advice! I am only starting the first leg of my journey (the M.A.) but these tips seem applicable across any part of an academic's profession life!

FYI: IU-Bloomington has started the process of notifying accepted applicants (including Ph.D. students). However, if you've applied and didn't get a response yet, don't give up. They don't notify all in one batch like many other schools do. One prof. did mention that funding will be very tight this year, so there won't be a lot of offers this cycle. (feel free to PM me if you have more questions)

Congratulations to all the accepted students so far this cycle. I've been buried with coursework this semester, so I haven't been able to post much, but good luck to everyone. This thread finally looks like ours did last year, which is to say, freaked out.   Try to stay calm and remember not to tie your self-esteem as a person or as a scholar to these acceptances.

Congratulations to the UNC admit! :-)

Thank you to everyone who congratulated me! I would specify, but after spending a few moments about to write down these unique names... I'm just leaving at 'thank you guys, you are truly exceptional people!' I'm so happy that this is the generation of historians I get to work with!

Accepted in Oklahoma University! Yay, what a relief that I got accepted into the only school I applied to. :-)

I am curious, I was told that I was placed on a list of alternates for a GTA'ship. Is that the norm? I'm curious if it was just a nice way of saying that I have no funding.

To be perfectly honest, I didn't expect any funding for a master's program, but the prospect of a position is nice.

So... perhaps schools should provide medication costs in their app fees. I think it is a reasonable request at this point.

I love this thread! Growing up on the lower end of working class definitely gives you the ability to identify 'necessities,' a trait I find lacking in most students, which in turn helps you realize that you can live off of that "$1500 stipend." I'm thinking, that's what my dad made at his best job working 8 hours a day, five to six days a week! lol
