The fact that it doesn't get freezing cold was such a draw for me. Then again I grew up in the desert... -

Could be a problem with where you applied--Penn has Kenny Goldsmith, who teaches an undergrad course called "Robotica Erotica." You watch a whole lotta pornography in that class. -

Still nothing for me. God damn I hate being on the edge of my seat like this for so long

I mean, you can't tell my name from this username, but I have one of those distinctive names where if you google/facebook it, there's only one result. It's not a big deal cause it's only 20 people, but it's still weird

Wow, thanks Austin for CC-ing all the acceptances instead of BCC-ing them on this latest visting info email. Not an unprofessional thing to do at all.

I just used this GIF in the Brown topic but I feel like more people would like it: -
I just went online to check my status and it still says a decision has not been made. Code Kermit over here.

Movie Adaptations?
HunkyDory replied to todamascus's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I mean the Millenium trilogy is dumb pulpy reading--but the mysteries are constructed well enough that they become decent page turners, even if all of the characters are masturbatory and 2 dimensional. Fincher's movie was a little weak though, I thought. I mean, yeah, the anal rape scene was especially brutal on screen, but most of the time I was thinking that without reading the book, you miss a ton of background. And while the movie still makes sense, the pacing just got all sorts of fucked up. -
Pretentious? The key part of being pretentious is that there is no merit to back it up--presumably at this level you should have some merit. So you can be delusional, self-important, elitist, condescending, douchey, sycophantic, and so on. But you shouldn't be PRETENTIOUS. Regardless though, it's always good to keep a sense of humor about what you do.

So everyone that got in--you're going to the visitors' days, right? I'm pumped for it--it's kind of ridiculous how late it is, but I'm sure it's because of SXSW. Apparently people will rent out their houses/apartments for $500+ a night during SXSW, there's just that much of a shortage of places to stay

Not all Universities are closed for President's Day though, so Monday is a viable notification day. -
Books NOT to read-
HunkyDory replied to perrykm2's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I mean, presumably the people in this forum are going to get their degrees and become part of a generation of academics, correct? It has no effect on anyone personally, but the idea that an anti-intellectual atmosphere is being fostered among people that will eventually be heads of their fields is absurd, non? I'm not trying to be a jerk--I think there are some salient aspects of academia to be discussed here. The philosophy of education and what we value as academics is a major part of the scholarly process. I only mean to inspire conversation, and the fact that my screen says "8 new messages" since I started typing this means I'm doing just that. But if you just want to circlejerk all over each other, please be my guest, I won't stop you EDIT: ImWantHazPHD's gif sums this up really well -

Oh stop overreacting. I don't even care about the "canon", but there is not a single possible framework you can use to justify Eggers and Rowling over Joyce and Pynchon. All a statement like that says (and especially the criticisms of Joyce that show a complete unfamiliarity with his work) is that this person has no business in an English department--they can't think critically, and their intellectual comprehension is nonexistent. I'm just stating the facts--if you want to get into academia, the holistic holding hands approach is pointless. I like Pound's notes on the Wasteland manuscript--forceful and not putting up with bullshit. -

What's it like to be illiterate and pursuing an English PhD? -
Wayne Lesser sent the email. He's the Graduate Adviser

A friend of mine from undergrad is at UT Law now, and his girlfriend is an English PhD there. According to him, all of the English PhD students live pretty comfortably, since Austin has such a low cost of living. And re: the 95% tuition waver--apparently that comes out to paying about $200 a semester.

Reminds me of my favorite comment I ever got from a professor. Freshman year, first paper in a Romantic Poetry class, and he writes- "In class you seem smarter than this paper would lead me to believe" Nice backhanded compliment. -
My status changed on the website, check that too? Haru -- I'm contemporary and digital poetics.

Just got accepted to UT-Austin for English! First acceptance of the season, still waiting on all of my other schools. Flipping out right now.

Movie Adaptations?

The Paradise Lost movie got cancelled like a week ago. The funding fell through. There are Great Gatasby and On The Road movies out this year though.
