  1. Hi All! I got some very encouraging responses from Professors at the following: CUNY Syracuse Upenn Duke Brown Umich UCLA UCSB Can you tell if any of these schools are known to place less emphasis on undergrad and grad grades? Grades are the major weakness in my record. Thanks a lot!
  2. Hey! thanks for the reply. $22,000 should be fine, right? the second and fourth years will be tough! I don't have a car. All I need is my own bedroom and enough for food and beer!!
  3. Hi! can anyone tell me what amount can I except if I am promised a full fellowship at UCSB. will that be enough to cover the living expenses..
  4. Hi! sorry to join in late. I contacted a few visiting Profs and sometimes they say things like "I am interested in your research but Im not full time faculty I would suggest that you get in touch with ......" They may ask you to get in touch with full time faculty that may be interested in your research or somebody that they are on good terms with..so I don't see any harm. But in order to strengthen your chances you should aim to get a good response from full time faculty..senior, influential ones if possible.
  5. I don't just want the degree I want the PhD experience....I am not too concerned about job prospects. I want to get into a decent program and I am trying to figure how low to aim to be assured of admission. If I get into an excellent program nothing like it, if not I must start with my PhD can't wait another year. I have a masters degree in Economics and no formal training whatsoever in Anthro, so I think it is reasonable to temper my expectations and be prepared to settle for a not so popular program. Please advice! Thanks
  6. Hi Thanks! I understand it is all about the fit. But don't you think Yale and UCB will see more competition than lets say Penn State even though the latter is ranked higher? My concern is to ensure that I am accepted at atleast one university. My strategy is to apply to more universities that aren't highly ranked or those that don't enjoy a high reputation. How do I go about it? The professors I have shortlisted range from the very top rated universities (QS world university ranking) to the those that dont appear on the list. For example given that I am an equally good fit at Brown, UCSB, Uwisc and U.minn where do I face the least competition? Please make an educated guess! Thanks!
  7. Hi! can anyone suggest a popular ranking of grad schools for socio-cultural Anthropology in US. Thanks
  8. I am so glad I came across this post! I have never done an anthro class but I must prepare a statement of purpose and how do I do that without reading some important work. Is it enough to say that I have the ability to learn as shown in my GRE scores and the enthusiasm for the topic I choose? Thanks
  9. Hi! I have not any anthro at all I like the idea of reading what interests me rather than start course work. But I how do I prepare a research proposal/statement of purpose without reading up on the subject. will it be OK for me to say something on the lines of.....this is how I got interested in anthro and this is the broadly the area that I want to work on though I have no prior experience in this field...? Thanks,
  10. Hi! thanks comp12 and brit32011 I cannot take any anthro classes coz I am not enrolled anywhere and it will be difficult for me to do any classes. But I am reading up on the subject started from the very basics - reading Anthropology by Carol R. Ember, Melvin Ember, Peter N. Peregrine. Will it be ok if in my research proposal i simply indicate my area of interest, say I wold like to work on gender discrimination in some society etc or it is a must to present a proper proposal with a hypothesis and a suggested methodology? Thanks and all the best!
  11. Hi All! I am planning apply for a PhD. in Socio-Cultural Anthropology. I did my post grad in Eco. and worked for three years (not related to eco, IR or ANthro).... I have a 1430 equivalent in GRE V-165 Q-158 AW-4.0 I am not sure how to convert my 55% in both undergrad and post grad from India into GPA scores. I am prepared to spend 5 years in a MA + PhD integrated course, provided I get full funding. Please suggest what universities I should look at for realistic chance of getting full funding. Please bear in mind that I have no training in this field and I cant prepare a very specific research proposal...it will probably indicate a broad area of interest. On a scale of 1-10 what are my chances of getting admitted into any of the top 50 socio-cultural Anthropology programs in US with full funding? Thanks and Regards,
  12. Hi All! I am trying to decide whether I should apply for a PhD. in international relations or Socio-Cultural Anthropology. I did my post grad in Eco. and worked for three years (not related to eco, IR or ANthro).... I have a 1430 equivalent in GRE V-165 Q-158 AW-4.0 I am not sure how to convert my 55% in both undergrad and post grad from India into GPA scores. I would prefer Anthro PhD, and I am prepared to spend 5 years in a MA + PhD course Please suggest what universities I should look at for realistic chance of getting full funding. Please bear in mind that I have no training in this field and I cant prepare a very specific research proposal...it will probably indicate a broad area of interest. Please give me specific advice on how to go about the application process. Thanks and Regards,
  13. I am in the same situation. got ranges of v700-800 and q720-800 and final scores of v165 (690) and q158 (740) and a pathetic 4 on AWA! Kaplan predicts that the avg scores of people who take the new test will be lower than the average of those who took it later. Though I don't know if the Adcoms will factor that in.
  14. Even though the GRE only tests things that we are required to be familiar with it tests it in a format that we may not be used to. Therefore some practice is required. I would imagine that 2 months of preparation of 1-2 hours a day is sufficient for an average person (to get a good score of above 1450). I never prepared for more a few hours for any test in life and always did way above average. Everybody always thought that I will do great when I put in that effort. It seemed cool in school and college But at the end of the day I am just above average....not excellent.
  15. Hi! I am not enrolled at any the places. But I can tell you this: the chances of getting admission are actually better this year. People are not getting funding from many sources especially funding from employers has dried up. In such a situation people are not willing to leave their jobs to get a degree in public policy. There is the popular view that a lot of people who dont have jobs are heading to the universities or freshers who were set to join the job market are continuing with education but that is not borne out by data. Fewer people are willing to invest the money and time because of the uncertainty. So by all means improve your SOP but you might just get lucky this time. All the best!
  16. Hi Eigen, TheCrow and Waves Thanks for the replies. Actually I am trying to convert 55% to GPA and I guess 55% from a university in India cannot directly converted to 2-2.5 GPA. But I'm just looking at the worst case scenario. Anyways I don't there is enough time for me to pose as the best fit for any of the good university this year. I am considering applying for admission in 2013. Thanks

Something like the program at UC San Diego seems very suitable to my interests, but I might be aiming too high. Can anyone kindly suggest point to me the kind of universities that I should target? 22. Hi! I have a GPA of around 2-2.5. in both undergrad (commerce, business, accounting) and Masters (Economics). I have a decent GRE score of above 1400, quant - 720-800 and verbal 700-800. Final score will be available in mid-november. I have almost 3 years of work experience as an Researcher on Infrastructure (and good LORs from work). What are my odds of getting into phd in Social work and economics at U.Michigan Ann Arbor. Are there any other similar programs from other reputed universities that I can apply to? I am aiming too high? what universities can I hope to get into? I am also interested in pursuing a PhD in public policy. Once again, what are the universities that I can target? Any advice will be highly appreciated.
