  1. Well, there's obviously a lot of individual author journals for us. The Faulkner Journal, Hemingway Review, F Scott Fitzgerald Review, Steinbeck Review. Then there's the Southwestern review if you're into American West stuff. The others you listed are of course the big dogs.
  2. Anyone get an offer from WVU? I finally heard--my first acceptance!! I feel like a heavy burden has been lifted off of me now. Got a fairly sweet financial package too. I'm going into the weekend on Cloud 9. Not to mention it'll be an easy transition for me to move there since I know a lot of folks in Morgantown.
  3. I'm waiting on the Philosophy & Literature program to get back to me. Here's to hoping!
  4. My last name starts with a Y, so I'm usually last in the chopping block for most things.
  5. I definitely feel you there. I just want to hear SOMETHING positive. If not Miami, perhaps Ole Miss will be kind to both of us.
  6. I got the axe today. 5 down (4 officially), 1 waitlist that I'm hoping for, and 3 more to go. Staying upbeat and focused is hard these days.
  7. Lol nevermind--got the ding this morning. Oh well.
  8. Thanks for letting me know. I went to the site and it said no data for user...which is quite weird. You'd think it'd say yay or nay--maybe I'm on one of those back-up wait lists, although the skeptical part of me from this rather abysmal season thus far makes me doubt it lol.
  9. How'd you guys figure out? I'm in the dark still. And what is Testudo?
  10. I too haven't heard anything yet. What gives?
  11. Hello all--saw some UNC rejections on the board; people said they checked the website. Where did you check, the Apply Yourself site? Because, I just checked and I didn't see anything there. But, since I haven't heard anything yet, I'm guessing it's an implicit rejection.
  12. ‎"Dear jywayne, We regret to inform you that our program took 12 people this year. We had more applicants than the state of West Virginia has people. While we appreciate you giving us your hundred bucks, we are sorry to say that, after careful consideration, you will not be a fisher of men anytime soon. Best of luck in your future as you do whatever it is that you do. Hasta la vista, baby, Michigan."
  13. I haven't yet gotten the rejection (will prob be tomorrow), but I feel the same pain as you guys. PS: That's a cool username, Ahab.
  14. I found out that I am on the waitlist. After hearing so much "no news" for a while, I'm a bit disappointed that it wasn't instant gratification, but I'm willing to wait it out for UTK and super happy it's not an instant no. Good luck everyone!
  15. I saw a wait list on the board today, via mail. Anybody want to claim it? Here's to hope that you'll get off the wait list, and here's to hope for everyone (I am really crossing my fingers for UTK!)
  16. It definitely seems that way.
  17. Another day--more gut wrenching torture of nothingness. I am currently going over in my head what I'm going to do with my life if shut out, considering this is my life. I guess I'll just have to throw my master's degree in the drawer and go work at a coal mine or hopefully my father can get me a job on the railroad. I might have to go back to my part time summer job at Wal-Mart for full time. I do think that if I get shut out, I'm definitely not going to put myself through this hell again, which means just giving up on academia.
  18. Texas, UVA, Michigan, WUSTL have posted news--and I still haven't heard anything. I'm starting to feel really nihilistic. That might come as a result of reading Cormac McCarthy ATM too. Ah well, let's hope I can at least get in to a safety school, or else I guess I'm going to have to return to cashiering even with a M.A in English. ;
  19. I had a student once write a paper like that and put his works cited page in green color. I gave him a point or two just for having the gumption to do that.
  20. Another book that I absolutely loathe--Clarissa. Now, I know its importance in the canon per se, but it was one of the most painful things I've ever read in my life. And, to think, Richardson doubled the book almost in its unabridged version. The 18th century up until the Romantics should've just stayed content reading Shakespeare, Milton, and the classics.
  21. Anything written by Gertrude Stein. Tender Buttons is worth little more than pleasant bathroom reading. DH Lawrence is pretty horrible too. My angst might be from having to read Women in Love in one weekend in a grad seminar though.
  22. I feel exactly that way. I wish I'd have saved my hundred bucks by the time it was all said and done and not even bothered to try there.
  23. I concur. Strike 1 of 9 it seems here.
  24. Michigan is my top choice. I'm going to have a nerve-racking afternoon now, lol.
  25. If I don't hear something this week after many weeks of hoping to hear something already, I think I'm going to go looney.
