RockStar reacted to MaxiJaz in Life advice
I just saw an interview on the person who wrote the article below and a lot of what he said resonates with me at this moment, though probably not when I first graduated from undergrad. I thought it would be helpful to share, even if not everyone will agree.

RockStar reacted to ANDS! in my phd-advisor stole my manuscript and published it himself
I just want to say, if you look at the thread title from the front page it says:
"my phd-advisor stole my man"
I have nothing else to contribute to this conversation.

RockStar reacted to kaijura in MacBook Pro vs. Thinkpad
You should be fine, with all the USB/digital download options these days there's really not much other need for a built in optical drive that doesn't get used a good 3/4 chunk of the device's lifetime. You can directly copy from a dvd or load a Win7 install on a usb stick/sd card provided that I believe the minimum capacity necessary to do this is 8GB.
And if you ever really need to use CD's, just grab an external drive. It's a pain lugging around, so hopefully you can clone it to ISO or not have to use that CD often.

RockStar reacted to Stories in Good Laptop for a Grad Student
I'm a power user and overall computer junkie so keep that in mind.
If you're looking for solid build quality, go for a Lenovo. They break the bank and are boring as nails to look at, but they are solid (think Toyota or Honda).
If you want something with design flair, great hardware for the price, go for a ASUS. They don't have much of a reputation yet and some would say they look silly, but they pack a lot of performance for the price (think Mitsubishi).
If you want something that's very mainstream without many frills, reasonably priced, and fairly reliable, get a Dell (think Hyundai).
HP, Gateway, and Toshiba are other mainstream companies which don't really stand out in any way. HP offers many different SKUs so you can get pretty much what you want, but their reliability and build quality leave something to be desired. Toshiba is kind of, meh, all the way around. Gateway makes a few great gaming laptops (their FX series), but their mainstream laptops are a bit big and unwieldy compared to the competition.
That's my $.2

RockStar got a reaction from snes in Choice regret
Today, I can laugh at this thread.
I made my decision like a month ago (forced by the hand of a very aggressive school). I finally chose and was sick to my stomach and depressed for like a week and a half. Today, I'm on cloud 9 happy and excited about the decision I made. I think it's like losing a little part of yourself when you turn down a school you could really see yourself attending. Now you no longer have that option. But if you just move forward and focus on the choice that you did make you will find your happy place .

RockStar got a reaction from kaykaykay in happy and jealous the same time
I hope you can get over this feeling, too. You need to stop comparing yourself to others. And you need to stop taking away from another's accomplishments to make yourself feel/look better. Maybe as you continue to mature you can get past this feeling. I'm not trying to be hard on you, but I feel that people aren't honest with each other often enough. Good luck.

RockStar got a reaction from rising_star in how to effectively do literature search and review?
Talk to a librarian. He or she will be your best friend in this matter. If you have a few references that you know you are interested in, start with a collection of key articles (probably 10 or more) that you already know you would like to have in your review. Your librarian can help you determine the controlled vocabulary that is being used to index these articles. (For example PubMed assigns subject headings to articles and Embase does something similar). Once you know how these articles are being index you can develop a search logic that will help you yield similar types of articles. If your research revolves around "the economic study of X" then your search logic may look something like : search for "Economics" AND ("synonym1 for X" OR "synonym2 for X" OR....). Then you may wish to look into a reference manager like endnote to organize your references. You can group them according to being included/excluded, discussion material or however you want to set it up.

RockStar got a reaction from amblingnymph in Those with great offers: pls withdraw from second-tier schools
Megan had a great response to this post. In short, people should have freedom to review their options within the allotted time. And most people tend not to hold on to a spot unnecessarily if they know they won't attend the school.
I was accepted at 2 schools and wait listed at a third. The wait list school told me that the list is not ranked and that once they get all of their responses from the people they offered admission, they will reassess the candidates on the wait list to choose appropriate fits. So if someone declined who sought to study Mississippi red clay (just an example), then someone on the wait list seeking to study the same would have the best shot. Not sure if this is how it works at all schools tho.
