I would start with the folks in the independent training company. Explain to them what took place and how your actions were not unusual. Say you are planning to head back to school but wanted to finish training programs with your clients as promised. Tell them you feel you were unfairly terminated.

I'm having this exact dilemma. I have to use SAS for my PhD program so I will need a Windows platform whether I go with Thinkpad or use a dual boot option on the Mac. The next generation of MPBs are rumored to exclude the optical drive. I'm wondering how this will affect loading Windows via bootcamp or other necessary software that will come on a disk?

I'm not familiar with any fully funded MPH programs. But if you think you might be interested in a longer term investment in the field of PH, there are programs that combine MPH or MSPH and PhD, which have some funding (e.g. UNC Chapel Hill).

Today, I can laugh at this thread. I made my decision like a month ago (forced by the hand of a very aggressive school). I finally chose and was sick to my stomach and depressed for like a week and a half. Today, I'm on cloud 9 happy and excited about the decision I made. I think it's like losing a little part of yourself when you turn down a school you could really see yourself attending. Now you no longer have that option. But if you just move forward and focus on the choice that you did make you will find your happy place .

Well the meaning of the poem is open to interpretation. The first 3 stanzas tell us that the two paths are equivalent and have been equally travelled. But in the last stanza he speaks of himself in the future saying that one day he will look back and say that he took the road less travelled. I will be pursuing a PhD in Epidemiology and I noticed that compared to other disciplines (even within public health), it can be like pulling teeth trying to obtain funding. On the other hand, basic science PhDs seem to get fully-funded. Why is there such a disparity? Let's discuss.

I asked for an extension and got one. Just ask. Tell them you are excited about their program but need more planning/processing time before making the decision. It helps if you throw out a date for the new extended deadline. Any idea when you might hear from the other school? Also, I would use some language about the April 15th deadline without calling them out directly. Like maybe say "I understand that my responding to the offer ahead of the April 15th deadline would help on both ends to proceed with planning; however, I would like to ask for additional time to..."

The last author is usually considered the corresponding author and is responsible for providing guidance during research and editing of the written document. Last author is usually the PI. So last author is a pretty 'prestigious' spot. More so than first author at times. As far as the second author offer, my first piece of advice is --- TAKE IT! Secondly, ask what will your contribution be. It may be a contribution that you've already given to the research effort. Coauthors are also responsible for reading the document and proving comments once the paper is written. The role of a second author is not always set in stone. Effort and writing responsibilities will vary by project.

Talk to a librarian. He or she will be your best friend in this matter. If you have a few references that you know you are interested in, start with a collection of key articles (probably 10 or more) that you already know you would like to have in your review. Your librarian can help you determine the controlled vocabulary that is being used to index these articles. (For example PubMed assigns subject headings to articles and Embase does something similar). Once you know how these articles are being index you can develop a search logic that will help you yield similar types of articles. If your research revolves around "the economic study of X" then your search logic may look something like : search for "Economics" AND ("synonym1 for X" OR "synonym2 for X" OR....). Then you may wish to look into a reference manager like endnote to organize your references. You can group them according to being included/excluded, discussion material or however you want to set it up.

This situation is eerily similar to my own. For what it's worth, I'm leaning toward going to the university that is the better research fit although further away.

Megan had a great response to this post. In short, people should have freedom to review their options within the allotted time. And most people tend not to hold on to a spot unnecessarily if they know they won't attend the school. I was accepted at 2 schools and wait listed at a third. The wait list school told me that the list is not ranked and that once they get all of their responses from the people they offered admission, they will reassess the candidates on the wait list to choose appropriate fits. So if someone declined who sought to study Mississippi red clay (just an example), then someone on the wait list seeking to study the same would have the best shot. Not sure if this is how it works at all schools tho.

I hope you can get over this feeling, too. You need to stop comparing yourself to others. And you need to stop taking away from another's accomplishments to make yourself feel/look better. Maybe as you continue to mature you can get past this feeling. I'm not trying to be hard on you, but I feel that people aren't honest with each other often enough. Good luck.

I know someone who went to hopkins and did clinical epi who does health services research. i guess that is the general track.

I got accepted to UNC Epidemiology PhD. No word on funding yet, but this is exciting news! Waiting to hear from Harvard, Hopkins....still need to submit app for UT Houston for 2/1 deadline (yeah I procrastinate like that).
