Hi everyone, I am a senior psychology major (applying for I-O psychology Ph.D program for Fall 2013) and I just found out that I got accepted into the McNair Scholars Program! I am really excited about this opportunity and was wondering if there are fellow McNair students/alumni out there that would be willing to provide some feedback on their experiences. More specifically: What were the most important things you gained from McNair going into graduate school? How has being a McNair scholar benefitted you during graduate school? Has anyone obtained the McNair fellowship during grad school? How is McNair perceived by adcomms? Anything else you feel like I would benefit by knowing/doing as I start the program? Thanks in advance for any/all feedback!

Great, that does help. Thank you!

Thanks Behavioral! When you say "cheap for the LA area", can you give me anything more specific? I am from Nebraska, so I am really pretty clueless on what to expect-rent wise-out west. I would be looking for a typical 3 bed/2 bath house or apartment.

I did not know this! I looked at their website and couldn't find anything about a fully funded masters program. Is it just not something that they advertise (which I guess could make sense)?

Hi Sarapsy! I am also applying for I/O PhD programs next fall! I have done a lot of research on programs, requirements, etc., so here's my two cents on your questions: 1) I don't think it is inappropriate to contact this professor about volunteer or internship opportunities at his firm, especially if you have corresponded with him before. Who knows, he might turn out to be a great LOR for you! 2) Like tauren said, you should take the GRE earlier...this way if you are not completely satisfied with your scores, you have the chance to study and retake it before you are in application crunch time. The I/O deadlines range from December 1-January 3. Make sure you know the application due dates at each school you are interested in so that you don't miss out on a top pick! 3) Check out US News Rankings for I/O psych programs: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-humanities-schools/industrial-organizational-psychology-rankings Michigan State is always on top, along with the University of Minnesota, and USF. Other schools that have good reputations in the I/O field are: University of Central Florida (very up and coming, but generating substantial buzz) University of Maryland University of Nebraska-Omaha Bowling Green State University University of Akron 4) Consider doing a senior thesis, which would allow you to do your own research project (this opens you up for a poster/presentation, and possibly even a publication) I hope this helps!

Marketing MBA/MS from a Psychology background?
ILuvPsych2013 replied to ChristianMB's topic in Business School Forum
Hi there! I notice that your post is a couple of months old but I wanted to comment since no one else has. . I am a senior psychology major and I am going to be applying to a number of Industrial-Organizational Psychology PhD programs (check out I-O too if you are interested in mixing psych with business) and I am also applying to a couple of consumer behavior programs. These are mostly housed in marketing departments; for example, one program at the University of Texas at Austin offers a PhD in marketing with a specialization in consumer behavior. UTA has many faculty members that received undergraduate (and some graduate) training in psychology who are now doing research in consumer behavior. Northwestern University also offers a PhD in marketing with an emphasis on consumer behavior. Purdue has a specific M.S. and PhD in consumer behavior, though it is more interdisciplinary (sociology, econ, etc.). I hope this helps! -
Emilyrobot: Thank you so much for the info! Extremely helpful. I will look into the areas you have mentioned and may hit you up again as I come up with more questions. Thanks again!

Yes, I definitely have a list going. Most have advised me to apply to 10-15 schools, so I picked the ones with faculty who share my interests. Thank you very much for your feedback! It's crazy to think that one can have those kinds of grades and not get in. It really puts into perspective how important the GRE scores must be. *sigh* If you don't mind me asking, how long did you study for the GRE? I was planning on 3 months, but do you think that's enough? I'm glad to hear you are not giving up and are reapplying!

I/O Psychology VS Social Organizational Psychology? HELP!
ILuvPsych2013 replied to ILuvPsych2013's topic in Psychology Forum
Interesting...thank you both so much for your thoughts. I think I'm going to stick with my original plan (I/O) -
While similar topics are researched in each of these areas, a key difference is simply what types of theories are behind those topics. My advisor explained it to me by saying that I/O programs will look at everything through a "psychological lens" while the business programs will not. I think it depends on where your passion lies and ultimately what career you want.

Would anyone be able to comment about the I/O Ph.D program?
-
I have heard conflicting reports and have ultimately decided that how a professor responds to your inquiry just plain and simply depends on the professor. Some view it as applicants trying to get an "unfair advantage" in the process. Others view it favorably as a sign of initiative. ULTIMATELY, here's what one of my profs told me: "If a prof takes issue with you being interested in working with them, you probably wouldn't want to work with them anyway."

I/O Psychology VS Social Organizational Psychology? HELP!
ILuvPsych2013 replied to ILuvPsych2013's topic in Psychology Forum
Thanks to both of you, that does help. So basically it sounds like the S/O route is more applied. I love social psych, so it peaked my interest. But like Ben Goodaker-Craig said, I was worried that companies may not know what it is...hmm, decisions decisions Thanks for your feedback! -
Hey everyone, I have been looking at I/O programs for about a year. In my search, I ahve started coming across some Social/Organizational Psychology programs at places like NYU, Northern Illinois University, Temple University, and Columbia. Does anyone know the main differences between I/O and S/O? Is one more suited for academic vs. applied settings? Is one more prestigious than the other? Just trying to make sure I am exploring all of my options. Thanks!

Making yourself a good candidate for I/O Psych Programs?
ILuvPsych2013 replied to gangwarily's topic in Psychology Forum
I am in a similar situation. I am finishing up my undergrad at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a school with no I/O program. In order to be more competitive come grad school application time, I was advised to get a business minor, try to put an I/O "spin" on any research I do, take advanced research methods courses, and (of course) keep the grades high. Hope this helps a bit! -
Hi all! I am also applying for I/O psych Ph.D programs during Fall 2012. I am currently a senior psychology major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln which, unfortunately, has no I/O program or faculty. I was advised to get a business minor and have also been involved with a social psych lab that does research on sexual harassment and other workplace issues. I have a 3.8 cumulative GPA and a 4.0 psych GPA. I am a Regent Scholar and am going be starting an Honors Thesis research project next semester. I plan on applying to the following programs: Depaul University University of Maryland Old Dominion University of Nebraska-Omaha Claremont Graduate University Michigan State Clemson University of South Florida North Carolina State Portland State University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign University of Central Florida Colorado State Bowling Green Purdue I would love to hear from any others who are applying in 2012, or any who have been through/know about any of these programs.

What are my chances of being admitted to I-O Psych PhD programs?
ILuvPsych2013 replied to BC22's topic in Psychology Forum
HI everyone, I stumbled upon your posts and although they were about a year ago, I would love to hear how all of you fared. I am going to be applying to I/O Ph.D programs during Fall 2012 and I was wondering if anyone had gotten in, had advice, or any other feedback. -
Thank you so much for that information! It is very helpful. Of course I have tried to look at all possible info online, but there's nothing like getting info from someone who knows the area! I appreciate the feedback and will do some looking in the areas you mentioned.
-
Looking into schools and areas like everyone else. Saw nothing about the I/O program.

Hi everybody! I was wondering if anyone has been through or knows anything about the Industrial/Organizational Psychology Ph.D program at Purdue. Any feedback on the program, Purdue, or the area in general? I am married with two small children, so I am looking for a place to live that is relatively inexpensive and safe. Thanks!
