I put this in the results search, but I did receive a rejection from Michigan State. Hopefully acceptances will be coming soon for others at MSU!

Society for Personality and Social Psychology '13 Meeting
ILuvPsych2013 replied to firstsight's topic in Psychology Forum
Going and stoked! -
I am also applying to I/O. Which programs do you know are not interviewing? I have been stressing about interviews and maybe I shouldn't be :-)

I agree as well. Send them the same basic stuff, but include a sheet that lists out all the projects you have worked with them on, what your role has been, etc.

Advantage to waiving right of access?
ILuvPsych2013 replied to Tolman's Rat's topic in Letters of Recommendation
Maybe it depends on the field. I know that my advisor, who actually sits on the admissions committee here, straight up told me that they do consider it in psychology. -
IO Psych is a psych degree while OB is generally a business degree. Essentially what I have been told is that they explore the same kinds of issues, but while OB has more of a "profit" motive to implementing change IO has more of a "human" focus. I think it really just comes down to looking at topics through a psych lens vs a business lens. All of that being said, the person advising me about this ended with this: "Ultimately, both IO and OB do the same thing...but OB earns about $30k more per year."

Okay thanks! I told my husband that I did this and he thought it was a little obsessive. Lol.

Okay, I'm a bit ashamed to admit this, but what the hell! I created a new email address JUST for grad school stuff, so I know when there's something in there it has to do with grad school.
-
Yes, I did name a couple of professors in my SOP that I would like to work with, whom I had contacted before I submitted my application. Hope this helps! Best of luck to you!

Hi there! I just submitted my application to GWU's I-O program...what info are you looking for?

Couldn't agree more!

Official Transcript + GRE Not Received Yet?
ILuvPsych2013 replied to paranoid A.'s topic in Applications
I have had this dilemma with several of my schools, and so I sent out some emails to the graduate secretaries. The general response that I have gotten is that they just get a huge flood of these things and it takes time to get them scanned, processed, and updated in the online system. -
Advantage to waiving right of access?
ILuvPsych2013 replied to Tolman's Rat's topic in Letters of Recommendation
It does seem like the world of academia is full of these little unspoken rules and like TakeruK and 1Q84 said, I do think it calls privacy rights into question. But at least for now, I guess that's the name of the game. Best of luck to all of you on your apps! -
As nervewracking as it is, at least your application stuff is somewhat in your control (which is weirdly comforting to me) whereas once the apps are sent out, it's all out of my hands. It's going to be a long few months.

Advantage to waiving right of access?
ILuvPsych2013 replied to Tolman's Rat's topic in Letters of Recommendation
It is generally assumed that you are going to waive your right to see the letters. Doing this allows your letter writers to write openly and honestly about you. If you did not waive your right to view the letters, ad comms could be concerned about the validity of the letters (ex. perhaps they only said nice things about you because they have you in a class next semester and don't want to rock the boat). Waiving your right essentially just instills confidence on the part of the ad comms that the letters reflect the writer's true opinion of you. -
Agree with all! Your interests are what they are for a reason...that being said, you want to come off as inspired and motivated rather than a victim. Best of luck!

Gifts for recommendation writers
ILuvPsych2013 replied to ghijklmn's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I will be sending my letter writers a thank you card with a Starbucks gift card inside. -
I have one school that asked for a 500 word SOP...craziness. I didn't cut out any one section, but rather cut some of the gory details and parts of my "story".
-
Here is how mine is formatted: 1) Intro 2) Research interests 3) Department/professor fit 4) Research experience 5) Conclusion that ties back to the intro/specific university I personally did not mention the professors twice, but I did mention the university/specific program twice. Hope this helps!
-
Same boat here! Good verbal and AW, disappointing quant scores. According to my adviser, there are some schools who use the GRE as their first cut point, so if you don't hit their cutoff they don't even look at the rest of your app. Other schools take a more hollistic approach, which would work in your (and my!) benefit. Ultimately, I am going to retake, but I am not excited about it at all.

Prepping for I/O PHd program applications
ILuvPsych2013 replied to gradorbust's topic in Psychology Forum
Your scores are amazing, so no worries there. The only other things are to make sure that your CV and SOP are top notch. I have emailed all the schools I am applying to and have gotten great feedback (only 2 out of 16 have not replied). FYI, Michigan State is taking students for the coming fall. -
Check out this website: www.siop.org. It is for I-O psychology (a sister field), but they have a searchable database for grad programs which includes O.B. programs. Good luck!
-
Hey all, Just wondering if anyone has any feedback on how much weight I/O programs (both masters and phd) put on the GRE. If you have solid research experience, strong letters, a great SOP, and good grades (3.8 overall, 4.0 major) but have subpar GRE scores (155V, 144Q), is that going to keep you from getting in?

too early to ask for letters?
ILuvPsych2013 replied to candycrava's topic in Letters of Recommendation
I second what amlobo said. Most profs seem to appreciate it when students don't leave it until the last minute. -
Listing speaking engagements on C.V.?
ILuvPsych2013 replied to ILuvPsych2013's topic in Applications
I have this section as well, but right now it only has poster and oral presentations of my research. Is this the same for you?
