  1. Hello friends! I just wanted to update you all on my status. After much careful deliberation and advice from respected colleagues in the field (including the Professor of Interest of one of the rejected schools), I accepted the very impressive offer from University of Pittsburgh to be an Irvis Fellow in my pursuit of the PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies with graduate certificate in Cultural Studies. I am super excited!
  2. Ok, I have this huge dilemma, folks. I know it's not a bad dilemma to have, but I am really worried about this. I am so afraid I am going to make the wrong decision and then second guess myself every second of the day after I can't turn back and change my mind. I have three schools from which to choose. School #1 is giving me a 12k assistantship for 3 fully committed years, and I loved every single faculty member there and the grad students all seemed genuinely happy. There is also major opportunity for practical work and research with one the biggest up and coming scholars in the field. However, the school isn't as highly reputable as the other two and is rural. School #2 is commiting 20k for 4 years and is very highly regarded as a top research institution. However, the grad students did not seem very happy and there was no opportunity for practical work. On the other hand, it is in an amazing location at the epicenter of research in my field. School #3 is commiting 16k for three years and 14k for an additional two years. It is also a highly regarded research institution with a single faculty member who inspires me to no end. I am a fan boy of his. There is also a practical/specialty requirement built into the degree. However, it is in an isolated city and I am not super excited about the coursework options. RECOMMENDATIONS?!
  3. Hello all. Some good news finally! I was accepted into the University of Maryland PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies program, and we should hear about funding by March 8th. I have also received word from University of Pittsburgh that they have recommended me for full fellowship, and I should be hearing about money soon. I haven't gotten official word yet from Bowling Green, but I am almost certain I am accepted. Now, it's just waiting for money. Question for you all: of the three (Maryland, Pitt, and Bowling Green) which would you choose based on quality of education and prospectus for university teaching positions?
  4. Well, the silence was for good reason. I just got my rejection. The program directors say GRE doesn't matter, but then the Graduate School says, "ok, but we won't fund them. We cut off at this score." And no funding means they cannot accept because they guarantee full funding to all aceepted. Man, I hate that stupid test that proves nothing but that you know how to study. I am a full time faculty member, father, and director of three shows a year. When am I going to have time to study vocabulary words I will never use? This really hurts. That was my top choice, and I spent so much time and energy into that application and in money paying my own way to travel across country to visit and meet with every single professor in the program. OK, I am pretty furious right now! Please tell me I am not alone in these feelings. Three rejections in a row in a week. I need a drink!
  5. If I do not get in anywhere, I am not trying again next year. I already paid $1000 to prepare everything, and the amount of stress it has put on my body is priceless. I already have a faculty job and an MFA. I said to hell with it, if I don't get in. I know my research is part of a pretty groundbreaking effort to make theatre a necessity and not just an accessory to culture. So, I will just do it on my own or wait two years and apply to cultural studies programs completely outside of the world of theatre.
  6. I need some advice. What do we do about silence? How can we perceive it? I visited a PhD Theatre program in December after a great deal of fantastic conversation via email with POI (and after completing all application materials in mid November). Since then, it has been completely silent. I sent an email inquiry to the graduate program secretary for a status update and heard nothing. I sent a thank you email to a professor who is not my POI but gave me some great insight in our interview, and I heard nothing. I recently emailed the POI, and also silence. The silence from the POI is telling. I think I've given up with this one and moved on. But it hurts a lot because this was my top choice and the POI is someone I admire greatly in the field.
  7. Congrats Bats! I just got my rejection from Brown. I'm not mad. I expected it.
  8. OK, I have been lurking but I will finally post, as I am starting to get a little impatient myself. I have also applied to U Pitt and University of Maryland and REALLY would like to hear from them. Here is my list: Northwestern (Performance Studies) - Rejected Brown - Have not received an interview request so just basically waiting for rejection University of Pittsburgh - waiting for anything University of Maryland - WAITING and REALLY hoping! University of Minnesota - did a campus visit in December and interviewed but it has been silent since so assuming rejection Bowling Green State University - lots of contact with POI and they are paying me to visit February 15-18. My only hope so far. Day by day, I am resolving myself to having only 1 possible acceptance, which bums me out because my research project is original, comprehensive, and met with several theoretical questions of my own that I want to be able to better answer through coursework. I think my only downfall is that I have an MFA instead of an MA and my GRE scores were not high. However, I am a full-time college instructor and a faculty advisor to two student organizations on top of directing three shows a year. It was impossible to study. Bummer.
