  1. Well definitely you need some support, and my husband is very supportive so he helps with the kids whenever I am stressed with too much assignments so if you have supporting family, friends, or anyone who can help with the kids when you are under stress that would make things much easier to handle
  2. Hmmm, well honestly I can understand your situation. I am currently taking a stat class & half of my class are feeling the same as you! so don't feel bad about it. Some people can grasp the concepts from the first time but others can't. A student might be able to get an A in a class by studying for half an hour each day, for another student he might have to study 6 hours/day to get B. So you have to understand that there are personal difference between one person and the other but this should not discourage you at all.One of my classmate who just joined the program been away from school for almost 20 years and having a very hard time with the stat class. However, he is studying very hard to grasp all the concepts (using google, videos, notes,...etc) and also he gets help from the teacher assistant as well from all the other student to keep in track. So what do you think the overall impression of this student progress? everyone respect him/ adore how diligent he is, even the professor feels the same about him. You don't have to understand everything, you have to prove that you are a hard working person who can do anything to learn. So my personal advise, don't say I am going to fail a class/ go to the professor and talk to him about your situation, most of them will help you with making extra assignment/ make-up if they felt you are serious about your study. I dont think you are in the wrong place, I think you are only overwhelmed because you can't manage. You still have time so work hard and dont give up!
  3. Yeah, it is definitely not an easy task to manage between school & family. I Believe it is hard at the beginning then you get used to how you can manage and adapt. And if you have a goal then thinking about your dream will always help you through the difficult moment. And yes Andromache 2012 they do get sick a lot from the daycare but you won't have that much options so you will get used to that too
  4. well, a personal advise I would say try to finish all the required work before each meeting. Every person is different from the other some advisors might be nice and encouraging while others might treat you in a bad way and blame you for not being able to adjust between work and study. One of my friends who is currently a first year phd student in good engineering program, had hard time with her advisor as she was not able to do the required work on time ended being asked either to reduce her hours or try to improve her performance. So I am sorry not to discourage you or make you feel bad but try to understand how your advisor is feeling about your progress (in terms of the required work not classes)
  5. I just started my phd program too which is something I wanted to do for so many years. I am still young but i have 3 kids. The youngest is few months old and I am doing pretty well in all my classes being top and getting comments from everyone about my performance and they would surprise to know that I have kids. I don't think any one is at disadvantage at having kids while starting graduate school I believe that your are at advantage since your kids always give you the motivation to do well in school (you will be always looking for a better future for you and your family). So stay up, YOU WILL MAKE IT
  6. Hi Thanks for the reply. I just saw your post. I don't know about talking to my current school about the issue. I don't think my school or any other school would like to hear that at all. I just started the program with the promise to do the research I wanted but after 2 months I realized that known of the faculty is interested in my research area. Also I hold a master degree so I have rec from graduate level study. I don't know also about asking any of my current prof for recommendations.
  7. Hi all, Any advises on transferring from one phd program to another due to poor fit in terms of research interests. Anyone who been to similar situation. How did you handle it? Please advise
  8. Quick reply to your post. I made it to 5 schools with undergraduate 2.5 one of them were umich but I had a graduate GPA of 4. So if you take care of other things in your application GPA, SOP no one will notice your under
  9. Guys this is great posting, anyone could please post which areas are best for family living (good elementary school). I saw so many posts online regarding different areas which made me confused which are the best for a family living. Also I have a car so I don't mind commuting to campus. Any ideas?
  10. Ok guys so waiting game almost over for all of us. I thought some of you might have something to share for the benefits of others . I have some thoughts for those who are applying or re-applying for next fall: First, apply to as much school as you can if you have a middle profile, you need only one admission to make you feel good and to ensure you are going to graduate school ( pick high rank, middle, and low rank programs) you can never guess where you would get your acceptance. Second, never underestimate the value of the interview but also don't feel bad if you don't get in after an interview. Your interview might not be the reason for not getting in, you could be selected for an interview only to be placed on the waiting list in case top applicants don't commit to the program, so always cheer up and don't get stressed. Also I would like to share some thoughts about one of my interview where the faculty where only talking about why I should select this program over other programs and why this city in particular is exciting, after listening to this conversation for over half an hour I ended up getting a rejection. So you would never know from the interview whether you are getting an acceptance or rejection. Be calm while waiting for schools but if they don't get back to you for so long after an interview feel free to email the school, many schools don't let you know that you have been placed on the waiting list. I thought that knowing you are in the waiting list at specific school would make the applicant feel much better than getting a straightforward rejection. At least you will know that you made it to the second cut of applicants, which in my opinion is a huge encouragement to re-apply next year in case you don't get in. And finally, it looks like if you are a top applicant you will be contacted by the school within few days- one week after your interview but if you are in the waiting list you might wait 2 months to hear back. Hope my thoughts will help those who are still waiting or who are planning to start their application process for next fall. Good luck everyone!
  11. K.Ash could you please tell me how long did it take to get your letter in the mail from the time you called?
  12. margarets thank you for the support! I really appreciate it even if I don't get in. And K.Ash believe it or not it is UMD too!! and they told me the same thing that I would hear back within a specific time frame and I never got a reply. And after I emailed the department they sent me the above notice. It is my top choice though, so fingers crossed! thank you for the quick reply!
  13. nikkirod2001 Thanks for the reply. But what about the online account why they don't just update it? Also I called the graduate office 2 days later and they said they didn't receive anything from the department, I am just confused and nervous and the same time.
  14. I emailed the graduate coordinator asking about my status and here what I got : The Graduate School has received all the decisions from the Admissions Committee and you will receive a letter with their decision from the Graduate School. Is it a rejection? and why they don't just reply back and give you the final decision. Any ideas?
  15. I think they are considering your application, that's mean you made it to the finalists. But don't count this as an acceptance as I received similar emails from some schools. Hope all goes well! Good luck!
