Be aware that you aren't going to meet a lot of southern guys at Duke -- it is called the University of New Jersey, Durham for a reason.

CUNY FL12 Acceptance
marlowe replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I don't envy you either. I'm still on the CUNY waitlist, but since funding is probably a no-go regardless at this point, I don't think I could afford to live in the City. -

I'll be at the Madison thing. Just got an email from my hosts -- they are baking me a pie! -

BDon, what is the deal? Are you skipping the Texas visit? Already set on Carolina? -

Not a professor in my subfield, so I presume it is the DGS. -

Just got an email about the waitlist for English PhD. The Professor wants to chat on the phone about some details - anybody else receive it? I am a bit confused, because it seems that the interviewees that were not given offers were given waitlists, but I was just given a straight waitlist. Excited though. -

I am also kidding; I have probably seen the prequels a dozen times each. I just pretend that they don't exist. -

Ha, nope, haven't checked that series out just yet. I just wasn't aware of any Star Wars films outside of A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Jedi. -

Lame. Well, you can like whatever you want, I guess. -

Do the BBC's "Sherlock" if you have not already checked it out. AWESOME stuff. -
After your comment on a different thread, antecedent, I google-imaged 'septum piercing' because I didn't know what it was. I saw the coolest fucking thing - a septum mustache. I know you're a girl, but if I had my septum pierced (and didn't want to grow an actual mustache which is way more awesome), I'd buy that.

I too felt like a burden on my references after two (and really three, as some of them wrote for my MA applications too) rounds of this stuff. However, I never, ever received any help on my Statement of Purpose or Writing Sample. I mean, they never even looked at it! My advice is to show it to someone younger - a recently graduated PhD, a recently admitted PhD; someone that has been through this process recently. This made a huge difference to me, I think.

I have another facebook friend that posted a waitlist. Good luck, Lolo!

Final Decisions?

Oh, I remember the old JBarks that thought he wasn't getting in anywhere. Now he has more offers than anyone. -

I can't see myself doing anything else. This is what I want to do for the rest of my life. -
I am continually blown away at how many North Carolinians there are here.

I don't think it could hurt you, but what do I know? If the stipend is directly tied to teaching (a standardized pay grade, I think), do they have the power to extend additional monies? I also might have read somewhere that these extra resources go to pay for the semester-long dissertation fellowships and funded summers. -

I mean, I presume that I received the same offer that you did, so I was a bit confused. It is probably their standard package - do you really think that you could negotiate for the other 5%? Or for a bigger stipend? -

I received the same call about the cruise. Maybe it is ETS selling our information? -

Doesn't UT offer five years, fully-funded? For what do you want to negotiate?
