  1. You don't have to go to law school. The job market pretty bad for those guys.
  2. That wouldn't be a terrible example. You wouldn't mind too much.
  3. I don't think your tone was negative at all - not in the least.
  4. Good for them. I have had nothing but straightforward and helpful interactions with the department at UT. People really do care about these things too, I think.
  5. What is a clitote? Spasticlitotes is not too terrible of a poster...and we are not an unfriendly group.
  6. Oh, most definitely. It is too bad that the weekend doesn't fall until early April, but it doesn't look like they had much choice. Can't wait.
  7. Glad my pick was chosen early in the thread - Beloved. I will give it a go in another couple of years to see if anything has changed, but I hated it both times through. Was it Antecedent that was loving Joyce's poop jokes? Check out his 'love' letters to Nora. They are absolutely the most poop-filled, explicit things I have ever read. I love almost everything on this thread.
  8. MichaelK = boss. It is greatly humbling to imagine that a group of tenured professors (with careers doing exactly what you want to do) picked out our writing and application out of literally hundreds of others. Intensely gratifying. My best advice (although I am in no way qualified to give it): make a list for schools next year, and spend a ton of time tailoring your SoP and writing sample to the individual professors that you would like to work with. I think this is so much more important than visiting the school or writing to professors or any other strategies that are still yet unproven.
  9. Thanks so much, antecedant. As someone that struck out completely last year, the second year makes all the difference. Fit is so unbelievably important, and this board really demonstrates that, I think. Edit to add: I am in Literature, yes. (Darn duke confusing my notions of English, Lit, Comp, etc.)
  10. Just got the email from the DGS! I am so excited; Texas was my top choice. Now I have some big decisions to make. I really didn't expect to be in this position. Good luck to you all still waiting to hear.
  11. This thread has absolutely no business wasting on page two. I love you all. We will all get offers eventually. Don't give up!
  12. NO WAY, Lolo; have you ever heard of "Little Chicago"... also known as Gastonia?
  13. I prefer to use the em dash as well. Is the "--" an em dash before it hits the printer -- something like an editor's notation?
  14. Waitlisted. Darn. Congrats to those accepted! (especially those that heard, like, last month).
  15. De nada. It really is a hilarious and fantastic novel. And you'll love it: the protagonist (if you can call him that!) is a medievalist!
  16. Ha! Evelyn Waugh is my favorite author, I think. I have read just about everything that he has written except for his letters (and I am saving a couple of novels for a rainy day - I have already purchased them!). Have you read Confederacy of Dunces? (John Kennedy Toole) I would absolutely recommend it to anyone, although I have met people that didn't like it.
  17. No word from CUNY here yet. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing...
  18. And to further what we have all been saying, my grades were pretty mediocre, and my GRE scores are equally mediocre. It is all about fit, I think. Keep trucking, guys.
  19. I will say, this site is both the best and worst thing to have happened to me in the last few years.
