  1. Not if you go to Carolina!
  2. Uh, it took me about one second to figure out which one you are. Dokkey and I are relatively safe, for now. Also, I don't see it as terribly unprofessional at all - just trying to foster a sense of community!
  3. Well, Tolkien was THE medieval scholar. In many ways, he is credited with the resurgence in medieval scholarship in the Academy, and his lecture to the British Academy is considered the beginning of this most recent epoch of study on the Middle Ages. Sadly, I have never read LOTR. As a medievalist, this fact is nearly as criminal as the medieval/renaissance scholar that hadn't read Canterbury Tales (lolo?). I read The Hobbit when I was six or seven and was totally overwhelmed by what followed. Never picked it up again.

  5. Yep, I RSVP'd yesterday. I am very excited, but I am also somewhat disappointed that it doesn't fall until April. That means that I won't be able to make my final decision until at least April 7th - the day that we return from Austin - and we'll be leaving the people on the waitlist hanging.
  6. Somebody mentioned it briefly already, but it is all about responding appropriately to your audience. For someone in our position, "code switching" is an effective way to build rapport with peers outside of the Academy, while still speaking intelligently about your interests with colleagues. Pretension, in my opinion, is speaking about the exoteric in the same manner that you would address your research. However, there is no shame in elucidating your ideas clearly and logically if 'common' speech' is not going to do the job properly.
  7. How embarrassing is it going to be in twenty years when we meet at a conference and conclude, "shit! we met on GradCafe back in the early 2000s"? Awesome.
  8. I figured as much, and I will probably end up streaming them. I figure I'll pick up the series when I head over to the UK this summer (but I'll have to figure out how to get around that international coding problem on DVDs).
  9. You've already seen the second series!? WEAK. I must see it. I've probably been through the first series at least four times. I am a huge Holmes fan though - read 'em all and seen almost every television and film iteration.
  10. Trip, just noticed that 2/3 of my undergraduate honors committee earned their PhDs at SUNY Buffalo. And the third member of the committee earned hers from the Grad Center at CUNY. YOU COULD BE THEM.
  11. Bdon, I didn't realize you had been accepted to Carolina. Any idea to which school you are leaning? Also, did you hear from Michigan, or is that one of those implicit rejections?
  12. I know it sucks guys, but hang in there. Plenty of us have been through one (or more) rounds of across the board rejections. As the philosopher Argent once wrote, 'hold your head up'.
  13. Awesome. Much needed, I'm sure.
  14. Except their 'series' (also known as 'seasons', to Americans) are far too freaking short. Six episodes does not constitute a season of television! (or in the case of Sherlock, three!)
  15. I see an English rejection for Michigan on the results board. Is that supposed to be an "English and Women's Studies" result, or have they emailed rejections to some?
  16. On the topic of Maurice Sendak: watch this if you haven't already seen it. Hysterical stuff, and I don't usually love Colbert. http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/406796/january-24-2012/grim-colberty-tales-with-maurice-sendak-pt--1 If you liked it, there is a part II that is even funnier.
  17. Don't forget "O"! Never saw it though.
  18. It's the fascination of the abomination. And sometimes it is nice to see people get into their dream schools...makes you think that one day it could happen to you too!
  19. Leaving to have pitchers on the porch in a few minutes. It's starting to get warm!
  20. Better question: When has the film been better than the book!?
  21. Ah, looking forward to these. Ah, agreed on both accounts. I love Holmes, and the Cumberbatch interpretation is pretty awesome. I loved the Jurassic Parks, the Thomas Harris/Hannibal Lector films. I always tend to prefer the books, however.
  22. You are still rolling 100% for the year, aren't you? NICEEEEE
  23. I have almost zero American Literature. I only took one course in American Lit in college, and it was contemporary (so Pynchon, Gaddis, Barth, et cetera). Hardly any Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Salinger. I had Eliot and Steinbeck from high school. I've spent the last year or so catching up, and I'm doing pretty well, I think. The gaps are shrinking.
  24. Back to the top for the weekend drunken revelry talk.
  25. Damn, I just reached my posrep quota. It was like two.
