  1. It is NORTHWESTERN DAY! (as in last year, today was Northwestern Day). We need to rush the "Chat Room" en masse when shit starts going down.
  2. I bought some Bulleit today, myself. I will have one for you all. Keep your heads up.
  3. It just comes down to the fact that lit people often don't want to teach comp, and comp/rhet people find fulfillment in exactly that.
  4. Agreed; I am teaching several at the moment.
  5. I think most literature people don't like Comp/Rhet simply because they don't want to teach composition. Teaching composition is one of those things that low ranking lecturers in English literature do until they can score some upper level literature classes.
  6. My guess would be that the same schools that choose not to take kids with MAs already in hand would not be impressed or swayed by teaching experience - the kind of schools that want to mold you from the start. I do know, for a fact, that UTAustin encourages applicants with teaching experience, and they offer the possibility of starting undergraduate teaching at the second pay-grade or tier. Somebody who knows more about it can elucidate further.
  7. Thanks for the responses regarding Comp/Rhet, English, Lit. Doesn't Duke have separate programs in "English" and "Literature"? That is mostly what I was confused about since I assume I would apply in English, but I study literature.
  8. Can someone explain to me the difference between programs in "Comp/Rhet", "Literature", and "English"?
  9. Alright, who are the biggest bosses in literary history that were over-shadowed by their more famous relations? I am going to go with Leonard Woolf and Branwell Bronte. Below is Branwell's self-portrait (I've seen it in person - pretty awesome).
  10. Wow, that was an excellent bit of insight into UT. I really do appreciate it.
  11. Awesome. What did you think about the program, specifically?
  12. The worst that they could say is either "no", or "your application is no longer under consideration". I would go for it!
  13. And without Canterbury Tales, there would be no Ulysses! Chaucer did more for modern English than arguably any other author.
  14. I have spent a fair deal of time in 5/7 of your application cities (not Bloomington or Storrs), and Austin is BY FAR the dog-friendliest city that I have ever been to.
  15. mmm. The Paulaner Hefe is my favorite beer, and I love Belgians, as well. I prefer ales to lagers, but I love all beer.
  16. Alright, Chat Thread: Drink of Choice? I've heard THREE Maker's and ginger, a rum and diet coke, Jameson, and flavored rum. We really like our whiskey and rum, it seems.
  17. Mmm, maker's and ginger. I'll be working on some Manhattans tonight. But usually, just beer.
  18. Weak, bro. Though you are quite successfully trolling the poor patrons of Grad Cafe. You mean Charlotte, of course. Wuthering Heights was not really my thing, but Jane and The Professor are awesome (if we are talking about the sisters as a single entity). You haven't read Canterbury Tales (but have read House of Fame and, I suspect, Troilus)!? If you are a medievalist, you've got to get on that. I have heard (on mediocre authority, I'll admit), that being able to teach and publish on Chaucer is an unofficial requirement for hiring in the field.
  19. I will say, however, that knowing that acceptance calls went out - and that I did not receive one - did prepare me well for the eventual rejection.
  20. Fortunately, everybody our age knows how to kill those things.
  21. I don't think Penn will have any shortage of applications! Interestingly, I don't really remember when I was actually notified of my rejections last year; rather, I remember sitting on Grad Cafe watching the acceptances roll in and just shaking my head.
  22. Strangely, I had Dalloway assigned in both high school and survey courses. I had to do The Waves on my own, and only got around to obscure Woolf (ie. Flush) because my gf is obsessed. I have absolutely no background in American Lit. None. I am catching up as quickly as possible.
  23. Ok, what are the 'early decision' schools? So far, I have heard mention of Washington University in St. Louis and Northwestern (and Emory for interviews). Let's compile a list. If you add one, copy the schools already listed and add yours to the list (so the most recent post will have all of them). WUSTL (Late January) Northwestern (late January last year) Emory (interview notifications)
  24. I think it would be beneficial to have a central thread where English applicants can conduct our online business. Here, we can discuss diverse topics that may not necessarily merit an entire thread to themselves (or we may decide here that a unique thread is necessary). Off-topic activity is also highly encouraged. Further, we can centralize discussion about time sensitive topics such as schools with early notification, minor-heart attack sessions, and results board activity. That way, we won't have to scroll through entire threads just to read a single post. This thread should move quickly enough that all you compulsive GC refreshers won't have to wait long to see a bold thread. Lit, Rhet, and Comp WILL become the premier sub-topic forum on Grad Cafe (if it is not already).
