  1. My buddy was (and this is due to my inside knowledge of his alternative offers) the top pick by FSU last year and I am glad with all the possibilities / well constructed training he has already received in such a short time. One of my colleagues went to SB and she herself says FSU is the better pick. I think they deserve the massive jump in NRC rankings that they were attributed as of recent.
  2. Word out is their rankings jumped to lower tier of top 15 in NRC and USN. I hope you guys sent apps in..
  3. Hey if it doesn't work go into stripping. Avg. salary for stripping is >100k a year.
  4. Have you guys thought to consider the size of the graduating classes of the "prestigious" colleges?
  5. Id check out Uwashington IR and IPE simply because of their CSSS center. For some reason rankings never take across-department quant centers into account, but departments must be very aware of how good their quant program is simply because every methodologist that comes out consistently place up.
  6. Wait for conference, make sure you contact the panel reviewer prior and explain to him/her your situation in hopes they would pay extra careful attention to your paper.
  7. I was in the same situation really (GPA , a little higher GREs but doesn't matter, and state school). Play to your advantages in SoP, if they read it for more than 4 sentences, you got a good shot. 1) Have an interesting research question in SoP, 2) identify at least 2 faculty members you want to work for and why 3) tell them an interesting story at the beginning (use a narrative) that lead you to Poli Sci! I did the same, got into some great top 15 programs; although I chose a top 20 program instead since a faculty member had ridiculously similar research interests. Be confident, be smart, but more importantly - be excited. If you don't get it this time, then you have another amazing chance to wait it out and hone in on what you really want to do.
  8. Honestly, shoot for top 16 as a safety and just do well at a school that places up. But no I think you'll be fine. What was your GPA
  9. To Gradcafe 26. I know a few people at that department, and EVERY student gets funding whether it be from Poli Sci or a University-wide package. Check out Caporaso for IR, Prakash for IPE, and Chris Adolph for IPE
  10. NYU and Yale placements have been lackluster. Look at Uni Washington for their IR and IPE programs. They're consistently placing above their rank and fund every incoming student.
  11. Look up Caporaso at Uni. Washington. His research deals with EU and financial crisis. I hear a lot of grad students there are really focused on financial regulation and global banking crises.
  12. Check out Professor Whiting at Uni. Washington. Ranked #16 on NRC and 18# for Comp. on US NEWS.
  13. Anyone hear back from China? The wait is almost as bad as graduate school decisions
  14. No problem! Here's the profile of the professor I mentioned: http://www.cas.sc.edu/poli/facbio/Hsieh.html
  15. If you go to National Taiwan, you should apply to University of South Carolina and list John Hsieh as your POI. It's my understanding we have a great connection with that university. FYI, I go to USC
  16. Go to WashU for political science, their placement looks awesome.
  17. Haha I really lol'd, "supreme leader" "Central Advisor" I guess i'm just trying to give labels. Happen a lot, people ask me "what the he*l is China's economy?" Me: ...uh....state capitalist?..or autocratic capitalist...and then I just give up and take their term "communist with Chinese characteristic", and then go eat at KFC in Beijing
  18. There are 2 different ways of pronouncing the name, one cantonese one mandarin (depending whether or not you're from Harbin, Beijing, or Guangzhou), the westernize name would be ping. And no you're right he was never President, he was General Secretary, this combined with the point of the crackdown I was merely being sarcastic. However I do believe his reforms post Mao were boom for the Chinese state, in a relative fashion of course.
  19. Favorite president: Deng Xiaopeng. Suck it you americanists !
  20. Golem wearing ray bands behind a 2001 gateway desktop.
  21. It may be the case that the applicant in question was a nontraditional major? I've met a few engineering and biochem majors who ended up doing a PHD in poll sci with a middle-ranged GPA (compared to social science majors at least).
