  1. My interview was very laid back. It was more of a discussion and the interviewer spent a good portion of the interview trying to sell me the school. She asked basic questions like "why do you want to go into social work?" and "what field do you want to go into?" She also outlined all the financial aid/loan sources available for me; she called the $58,000 price tag "the elephant in the room." Anyway, many people I know really liked Wurzweiler, but I chose not to go there despite significant scholarship allocations because I wasn't so impressed with what I saw. I went to an open house and sat in on classes and found that most of the professors were much older and weren't very engaging. Furthermore, the opportunities for specialization are minimal compared to other programs. In any event, I have several friends enrolled in Wurzweiler for next year- but they are all enrolled in the Block Program, which is probably Wurzweiler's biggest selling point. While Wurzweiler really wasn't for me, I also know many people who went there and loved it. I really recommend you sit in on classes, visit the school, and get to know the people there before you make a decision.
  2. I had a month to pay the deposit, but the other costs aren't due in April. Once your deposit is processed, all the other forms and stuff you need to fill out to attend school (the fieldwork placement form, the registration form, your Columbia ID form, health forms, etc.) are all due April 1.
  3. I'll be attending Columbia in the Fall! I'm from Long Island, and I'm pretty sure as of now I'm going to be living at home (at least for the first semester to see how it is)- I requested fieldwork on Long Island so hopefully I'll get that and won't have to commute to the city every day!
  4. I applied to a bunch of NY programs and UPenn. I got the most money from NYU but turned it down because I'm really looking for a macro-level education and didn't want a program that focused on clinical social work. The other schools I got into were not my top choices by any means, so they didn't really come into consideration once I got accepted to Columbia and UPenn. I got similar financial aid packages from both Columbia and UPenn, so I knew I'd be paying around the same thing at either institution. I'm a New Yorker, and I liked the idea of getting out of NY... but at the same time it did make me wary to start in a new city and at the time of my final decision, I decided I'd rather be near my family and friends. What I really based my decision on are two particular aspects of the Columbia program: (1) the very well developed SEA program, and (2) the JTS dual-degree program (while UPenn has a similar dual degree, the program is not as well developed or highly regarded.) At the end of the day, I just felt that those two programs would best prepare me for my future career goals, and so I chose Columbia! Good luck with your choice!
  5. Me too! I'll be at the Columbia/JTS dual degree program. It's a huge relief to have a definite plan for next fall!
  6. I can't say much about the programs themselves (except that Columbia offers more diverse concentrations) but I meant in regards to status. Fordham is a good school, but it doesn't have the Ivy League name attached to it. I don't know if it's in this thread or another, but I mentioned that my cousin was matching school scholarships and made the mistake of telling Columbia that NYU had offered him more money- the financial aid department very nicely informed him that if he wanted the cheaper price he'd lose out on the Ivy League diploma. While the education might be very similar and comparable, what really sets Columbia (and other Ivy schools) apart is the status associated with it; they use that to their full advantage in giving out scholarships because they know people will pay big money to get that name on their diploma.
  7. I got an email from NYU informing me that I was admitted with a scholarship on 2/15, and my application was complete on 11/7. In the email it says that their system is REALLY backed up and that he was only emailing me because their online system is delayed. Also- for those people who are worried about the costs of living in NYC- while it's true that it is expensive to live in Manhattan, and most city schools are relatively expensive, the living costs don't have to be astronomical. There is a LOT of low-rent housing outside of Manhattan (and even some areas within Manhattan, such as Washington Heights) that are just a short subway ride away from the city. If you're considering school in New York, don't be averse to searching for apartments or housing in Brooklyn or Queens! Many areas in Queens have great low-rent apartments and are typically about 40 minutes away from the city by subway. Just an idea for those worried about NYC :-)
  8. I got accepted to NYU a few weeks ago- they emailed me to tell me I received a scholarship. It was a merit scholarship of $15k/year, and that was in addition to my financial aid. I didn't receive my financial aid package yet, but even if I don't get anything NYU still gave me more than Columbia! Besides my own experience I have heard from current students that NYU gives a lot more money out than Columbia, and they give merit scholarships (unlike Columbia.) Unfortunately, I don't want to go into clinical social work so the NYU program isn't really for me- but hope you hear back from them soon!!
  9. If you're local it might be worth it to set up a meeting with the financial aid office and sit with them face to face and ask if there's anything see they can do for you because it's so expensive... Another alternative is to match school scholarships. My cousin did that last year- one school offered him a full scholarship but the school he wanted to go to didn't so he sat with financial aid office and said "you're my first choice but I can't afford it and school x offered me 30,000/year can you offer me anything?" and it worked- he got almost a full scholarship! Of course in the case of an ivy league school you'd have to match it to a comparable program, like upenn... They won't care if Fordham or whatever offered you money, because it's not even a comparable program. Its worth a shot- the worst that'll happen is that they'll tell you they can't give you any more and that's it. I actually am going to meet with the financial aid office next week and hopefully itll go well...
  10. No I have haven't sent it in yet... You should call their financial aid office.
  11. I got an email yesterday that listed all my awards and included a link to the financial aid/scholarships website where I can log in to accept or reject the awards offered.
  12. I just got an email from Columbia with my scholarship and financial aid awards- pretty good! You should go check your email and see what they offered.
  13. My application was complete on November 7, 2011. The decision is not available online; in the email it says: "I am writing to you because our official letter with additional details as well as our on line updates are delayed a bit" so I'm not anticipating the decision being on the website for a while.
  14. Just got an email that I got into NYU with a 15,000 a year scholarship! Probably not going there, but still good to get in! For those of you waiting on NYU, check your email!!
