Can I say I appreciate your post a lot though you seem to be hitting yourself on the head? It was not "toxic", I think you must be a good person indeed, to be worrying about not being a good friend and wanting to be better that way what with all the other trouble you have . Maybe I am similar to you, I think I would feel exactly the same way you feel if I were to be in the same situation. But I think , like fuzzylogician said, you need to be more proactive. I personally dont go for the blowing your own trumpet thing, but working hard and being involved in activities whose results are hard to ignore would make your case much stronger. Good luck, I am sure things will turn around.

Thank you! That is good news for me

Thank you, DJLamar. Is it a possibility to get into a program to which I have not yet been admitted ? Also , is it possible to transfer from any university to any other university ? As far as graduate courses are concerned , do most universities follow the same rigor in syllabus?

I am wondering about transferring credits towards a PhD too. I have an admit from a university into their PhD program, but the professor who works on my area of interest doesn't have any funding , it seems. I already have an M.S, so I wouldn't want to earn another M.S . I am mulling over the possibility of getting a transfer after the first year or so after being done with the core courses. Is that an available option? Oh, by the way I am an international student, so I should consider possible complications in visa status with such a move too. Thanks!

I've applied to the following programs , by the way: 1) Ohio State University 2) UCB 3) University of Wisconsin, Madison 4) Purdue University 5) Stony Brook University

Hi ANDS! Thanks for your reply. All my applications are "In Review". So I would assume they have started the review process. I am thinking the people at the admissions office wouldn't be able to give me any more information other than that I would be hearing back from them in a while. My query was based on some really early admission decisions posted this year, which are not typical response times, going by the results of the past few years (the one from OSU or Wisconsin for example). Since its been 3 months since I submitted my applications, I was wondering what made the universities respond to them first? Could they have applied any earlier? Since its not just admits but rejects also being reported early , was trying to make sense of this phenomenon

Hi, I was wondering if the response times for computer science applicants depend on any way on the time at which they apply? I applied really early (October mid) and some of the programs don't have deadlines till Jan 15th for international students! However, I was hoping that I would hear back early if I applied early and so far I've heard nothing. Has anyone any experience hearing back early for some reason or the other? Also in schools which follow rolling admissions, do they inform rejected candidates too, as they make their admission decisions ? Thanks!

What you think the adcoms are saying about your application

Come on guys, there have been times people have missed important mails, because they didn't check their spam mail, okay? So maybe we need to add important email addresses to the address book to avoid mail from such addresses going to spam ( I have already added gradadmissions@xyz.edu addresses for all universities I applied to , to my address book , but am not sure that those will be the only email addresses I might be getting the all-important mail from). At the same time, when we do check the spam mail, we know which mails to open by looking at the subject and sender , right?

I second that. To me, this incident has nothing to do with culture. Just one person (in this case gentlelife) being much more sensitive than the other (the roommate) . If I were you, gentlelife, I would stop placing so much importance on the actions of others. I would also try to be as independent and self-reliant as I can be, so that I don't end up in situations like these ( for example, if you had taken a book you enjoy reading with you to your room-mate's house, then when they were having fun when you were supposed to be in bed, you would have also had fun, since you would have been enjoying your book! That way you would'nt have allowed so much hurt and resentment, see?). And when I offered my friendship to some lonely person, I would really pay attention to their needs, since now I know, that my actions could have a profound impact on such a person.
