  1. DH has been harping on me to do that, he doesn't really get how expensive women's clothes, especially well tailored women's clothes can be. I just can't justify a $120 shirt no matter how well it fits.
  2. After some digging, I did come up with a few that had other human remains (like the Mutter Museum), however they are still few and far between, making arch more useful than physical anthro as far as a job search would be concerned.
  3. I am assuming you want to work in an anthropology museum, yes? Be aware that most in the US museums have little to no human remains in their collection- NAGPRA put an end to that, also people are uncomfortable with the concept of death and just storing the dead. The only museum I can even think of off hand that has some in the permanent collection is the Museum of Man in San Diego and that's mummies. I would recommend Arch just because more museums have a curator of archaeology or have some sort of archaeology collection. Have you done any volunteer work with a museum? Experience helps a lot in the museums field (even with the terrible job market). Also, you should know (I don't know if you have taken any museum courses, if you college offers them- I'm trying to think of what schools in Texas offer MST and I'm only thinking of Baylor, Tech, and maybe UT?) that most objects sit in storage most of their life, there are four times they are really off the shelf. Cataloging (numbering, measuring, photographing), Research (in which case you still wouldn't be handling that much), Display, and Preservation/Conservation. So "hands-on" isn't all that hands-on as someone might think.
  4. DH and I will finally adopt a dog. Nesting set in hard after the wedding and as long as we don't move to the UK, we're getting a dog. A friend even offered to care for it for the year if I do get into Leicester, she even wants us to get a dog.
  5. That's what I thought. I usually agree with her (except some of her wedding etiquette, if I followed all of that it would have been so much more of a nightmare)but her method sounds like false modesty, which I tend to find even more annoying because it shows you are trying to brag but are being sneaky about it. I do not think just saying you got accepted is bragging. Being excessively showy or self deprecating about it is closer. Sort of along the lines of the girls who complain "I'm only 95 pounds, I'm so FAT! On a diet starting now!!!!"
  6. For anyone else wondering- Waco does have a public transportation system (I only use the B.U.S. so I don't know the reliability even though they are all run by Waco Transit). If you live on campus you can take the Gold? Route to the small HEB for food. There are better stores farther away but you might have to make a couple bus transfers to get to the DASH and then from there either walk to take another bus to your apartment. However, many people have cars so you can always make friends to get around. That's what I did for 3 years- then I got married and used DH's car when necessary. Waco is trying to grow in things to do. There's now a fairly decent (from what I hear) farmer's market on U Parks near the river, in the summer they have a concert series at Cameron Park, Cameron Park is pretty awesome as far as recreation goes, Baylor Opera and Baylor Theatre have a couple productions throughout the year, Hollywood Theater in Woodway shows some of the Met's Productions from time to time, and there's always the Rodeo and fair in the fall at the HOT coliseum. It's definitely not a small town (I grew up in a small town) but it's not as big as DFW or Austin, but they're 1-1.5 hours away on a 4 lane highway so it's not a terrible drive (boring at 2 in the morning though).
  7. An MST MA would teach what is needed for the separation within a museum, not necessarily exhibit design. What you might find interesting would be a certificate program in exhibit design, I believe GWU has an online one but it may require a preexisting MA. Also, be aware that ANY job in the museum field is very difficult right now. I was told by my advisers and supervisors to go right into an MA program to try to weather out the economic downturn. So many budgets have been cut that finding openings is difficult, finding one that doesn't have at least a dozen applicants is even harder. There are so many applicants that it will take time to find a job, especially one as specialized as you are looking for.
  8. At the tail end of application season (at this point I was in a flurry of corrections), not only did our QB win the Heisman but my parents were able to come down to see my last game ever, and my bears went to and won the Alamo Bowl! It made the final stage of corrections and submitting much better, even if I was still a neurotic mess the whole time. For the record, I really don't care about football, especially now that I'm not forced to sit 15 feet from the sidelines every game.
  9. I have one friend who applied to one of the four programs I applied to, we've been in constant contact during the application process since we used some of the same LoR sources. When we get decisions, it will be a race to text each other. She will probably be the only one (other than DH if he is at work when I find out and maybe my parents) that I text/call the news of any acceptance, otherwise it will go a simple post on facebook for the other friends who were keeping track of my process. A good number helped me out with proofing CVs, SoP, Writing Samples, etc and some just want DH and me to move closer since I moved 1600 miles away for undergrad.
  10. There's also an Italy, Texas (found out yesterday a classmate grew up there) and a Paris, Texas.
  11. Rolling Admission with Leicester, hopefully will hear any day now. I was supposed to hear within 3 weeks of submitting but one of my LoR didn't get it in until 4 weeks (because their system won't submit for a letter request until you submit your application?) so my notice was just a notification that they're missing a LoR. I wanted to cry, and then I hunted down the professor and made her feel guilty since a friend was also waiting on a LoR for another application too.
  12. Go with my retirement plan early- start a small hobby farm with a few boarders, at least 2 horses (one pony for me to hunt and show with and a stocky trail buddy for DH), a few dogs, some sheep, maybe some goats and NO chickens! DH would have no idea what to do since he can barely stay up right in a saddle much less able to pick a hoof or deworm anything but I would be happy and busy. Or start raising and training Corgis for agility and herding with my friend who is going into the same field. She has slightly better prospects since her area actually makes money (and is relatively more glamorous, how is that fair?) but we're both freaking out since the job market is more than saturated on all ends of the spectrum.
  13. I'm in the process of submitting my applications for Masters programs and I've run across a couple questions in the final tweak 1. My top choice requires a minimum of 10 pages, my second choice (also a very good program) requires 5-10 pages. My undergrad program does not require a thesis so my best recent paper is 13.5 pages double spaced and ~8 single spaces. Do you think it would acceptable for the paper to be double spaced for one and single spaced for the other? 2. The paper was originally formatted with a title page per the assignment instructions. Would you suggest a title page (the paper is in Turabian)? If so what you include? If not, where should I state the title? My page number system is "Pony #" in the upper left corner of the header, starting on the first page of the actual paper. 3. Should I worry that my paper topic is not within my major or minor but does reflect the overall theme of my research interests? I majored in Anthro, minored in MST, my field research was on reception of a particular faith in Central America (the product did not lend it self to a strong paper but was mentioned in personal statement and in CV), my proposed research area is in relationship of form and function of religious structures, and the paper is on politics and religion in early twentieth century Germany. Thanks
