  1. Finished my undergrad classes! Now for the papers...

  2. For as small as my major and minor departments are- I only really talk to one person and we applied only had one school in common and from what I can tell in my major, there wasn't a lot of competition for the programs (not a lot are going into straight cultural anthro, some are going into forensics, arch, different subfields, peace corps, med school, etc). I am starting to feel awkward now that we are less than 2 weeks to graduation and what we're doing next is the main topic to come up. People in my minor keep commenting on how impressive it is that I got in- while they are going to an in-state program that are "good enough". It's not like I could do anything about where they go but it just makes me feel kind of guilty
  3. Maybe I missed it, but does anyone have suggestions for comfortable for walking but also dressier shoes? Heels and those cute little ballet flats are out for me since I have to use orthotics (it's hard plastic so doesn't fit in heels and pops out of flats if the backs aren't deep enough) This is the best I've found in real life, in a black patent, fairly comfortable but a bit young
  4. DH and I just sent out a "feeler" email today about a corgi-mix 90 mi north of us. If it comes back favorably (actively level is right, isn't too heavy), we're going up Saturday to see if we click! DH has decided he wants to name her (or another female dog) "Anyanka"
  5. When trying out a new riding camp, the other campers were completely confused when I said I had a fairly green pony to show the next weekend. Most of the horses I've ridden in the past few years have been green so it stuck. An extra e got tagged on at some point. The original inspiration for the name (I'm thinking my mom tied that hay bag, it is FAR too low). A friend (art major, works part time as a caricature artist) made me a poster as part of a graduation gift about our senior week trip to a convention, including a little mini-me. The poster traveled with me through undergrad.
  6. I've gotten these, but it's more "more of an excuse" since those I grew up with are only 2 hours away but my friends from ug (22 hours) may visit, especially since "our" QB is likely going to be living/playing in the same city.
  7. I met DH when he was starting grad school and I was starting undergrad at the same school. He dropped out but stayed in the area to be near me. My application pool wasn't really limited by what he thought- we've agreed that we'll need to move wherever I can find work/school since he can pretty much find it anywhere or work from home(computer programming). Starting when we move he'll continue to work for the same company as a contractor and eventually try and find a normal job, but for now the idea of working from home is really attractive to him. He knows I'll have weird hours, he's used to me disappearing during the fall for marching band so he'll probably see me more now anyway.
  8. You will flip flop between hating and loving pretty much everyone throughout the series (though you will in the end pretty much just hate Frank, at least I did). It gets pretty interesting with a character that is kind of introduced at the end of the first book and they do go to America further on in the series and that adds a new element that gives it a lot of possibilities. I never got a chance to finish The Fiery Cross, so I don't know how that turned out. I was in highland Guatemala for ethnographic field school. But I'm pretty much done with that since I don't plan on having Anthro as my academic core in the fall.
  9. A month later, the online system finally updated with my rejection. Thank you for the reminder, really.

  10. I flew through the first 5 books the last two weeks of my field school. It's amazing how good they get when you're research is done and you can't speak to anyone you haven't been sharing a small apartment with for the month, since your Spanish sounds like Q'iche and you really don't speak Q'iche. (someone else shlepped them down, I only brought text books and started to get desperate)
  11. There is someone on here who was accepted to Winterthur's MA program but not sure if they are still on the forum to give advice about that. But from what I saw when I went through it- it is very competitive. But I can't comment on the internship process- but I'm sure it's a worthwhile pursuit since it is Winterthur.
  12. We inherited ours from my ILs but my mom has picked up some great ones from yard sales and salvage shops.
  13. I've never had a cat (only dealt with barn cats) but isn't the general rule to have one more box than cats? Also, fun idea- our friend taught her cat to use the toilet (can't flush though) over the course of a month. It's kind of hilarious but pretty effective.
  14. Ug in Anthro but minored in Museum studies, starting an museum studies program in the fall. My minor meant I took the basic intro classes (with an internship and one grad level class) and looking over the course listings, my MA program doesn't even require those classes- except for the internship which they of course require. So not a lot of experience but enough to give me a good handle and a decent footing in the application process.
  15. I've had similar advice from a friend who goes to American- is there an upside to the orange line over blue? Most of the apartments we've found that we like/afford would mean I take the blue like from Van Dorn or the Pentagon.
  16. It's supposedly all on the blue line. The shuttle part is more convenience. My husband will be working from home so if it's outside the usual time he can easily pick me up- it's also about a mile from the complex. I'm still not decided but my husband really likes the complex and they have a decent dog policy. I'm hoping the apartment in the Capital Hill area will work out but this is a good lead too. Thanks.
  17. It's going to be hard leaving my ug since DH and I are so emotionally invested in it- but Nat'l Champs is a nice way to close our time out. Sic'em!

  18. Can anyone comment on the practicality of commuting from Van Dorn/Alexandria to the Foggy Bottom and Metro Center Stops? Google says it's about a 30 mn ride but I don't know how accurate that is. The complex has a shuttle to the stop and the walk afterwards seems pretty short.
  19. DH and I hopefully are adopting a dog within the next two months before we move- provided the contract works out the way he wants. He will be working from home and since we want a rescue dog it would be the best that someone will be home at least initially. After graduation I will be home all day until I start classes and at that point DH will be home all day. We have a short list of a couple mixes but it looks like we will be getting a Sheltie or Sheltie mix. I grew up with an adorable tricolor and I think a dog with the same temperament would be perfect for us. The Sheltie I grew up with:
  20. GreenePony

    Newark, DE

I grew up a little bit directly east (and have a friend from my hometown who goes to Udel)- from what I remember growing up and what he's said, I don't think you will need a full parka. I mean, my husband will probably use his (don't know why he has it)- but he hasn't lived "in yankee land" in almost 20 years and is a total wimp with cold. There will probably be a bit of snow and some freezing days but it will likely just be "cold". Have you checked out Weather.com's averages for the area? http://www.weather.com/weather/monthly/USDE0043
  21. My husband actually wasn't allowed to use his new laptop for most of his MCSC program, the professors felt everyone spent too much time on the internet and would pay better attention writing (his loss, my gain- a huge step up from my old one). In the few grad classes I took in ug, almost everyone was using notebooks. I'm planning on doing the same- I know I would get distracted by any other functions or files on the laptop. My hand will cramp up either way (multiple broken fingers from a clumsy childhood) but the lesser evil means I'll be less distracted.
  22. Heading there for a MA in Museum Studies (really excited to see the new space). I think DH and I will be living in NOVA, we're on the waitlist for an apartment in the capitol hill area but I can deal with a 20 mn metro ride if that lowers our rent.
  23. It may be a bit more like Gathering Blue because of how it is in a less "ideal" community but I would still say The Giver is superior to Hunger Games. According to Wiki a fourth book, 'Son' in the series is due out this year? http://en.wikipedia....e_Giver_Trilogy
