  1. Thanks, everyone! I have a lot to think about.
  2. Sigaba, that last point is another main reason my friend adviced I went report track. He thinks it's entirely possible that I may not be allowed to write my dissertation on the same topic as my thesis. I do have an original research topic and I'd hate to "waste" it on a thesis and not be allowed to write my dissertation on it.
  3. Well, today I found out I got accepted to the only school I applied for (placebound), which is good. Now the big decision is whether to go thesis track or report track. I have professors and friends (I work at the same university) advocating both sides but almost all think I NEED to write a thesis if I intend to go for a Phd, which I might want to do. My very best (academic)friend, a former professor of mine, is the only one that keeps telling me not write a thesis. He claims he often sees students struggle with the thesis and take years to finish it. He doesn't seem to think that having a thesis is really required to get into a prestigious PhD program. I don't know what to do.
  4. I guess the "So, what are you gonna do with a history degree?" question is pretty standard. Now I automatically answer "Hopefully not flip burgers!" My interest in food history and people just have no idea how to react to that.
  5. I am a slooooow reader....oy! I can't read a book a day!
  6. The scriptures are not completely the same. The Catholic church (both Roman and Orthodox) uses the bible with apocrypha, the books that were taken out during the Reformation. These books do not appear in Protestant bibles. Edited for typos.
  7. Christianity today does not necessarily equal Protestantism. They are Roman Catholics (vs Eastern Orthodox) because the papal seat was in Rome after the 1st Great Schism. Many early Christians did not believe only in one god and many were Jewish Chrisitians. It took a very long time for monotheism to come around after the rise of Christianity.
  8. I haven't read every post and I don't feel like I have a whole lot to offer but I hope that food history's popularity rises. I do admit that's my field of interest so I am completely biased.
  9. Hello everyone! I am applying for an MA program. I have submitted the electronic application and have asked the professors write the letters of recommendation. I have the writing sample ready (I actually have two, need to choose one). The only thing that is kicking my butt is the SOP. I have never written one before and I really have no idea what the heck I should be writing or how to do it. Thankfully the program I'm applying to does not require GRE scores. The deadline is Feb 15 and although it seems like so far away, I'm sure this SOP is going to take that long.
