I have a diffcult time calling professors and even my higher ranking colleagues at work by their first name. I guess once a squid, always a squid. The thing is, I work in a high profile department and constantly deal with the highest ranking administrators, so I'm constantly showing deference, it's just habit. Some of them insists that everyone call them their first name, but others really get off on titles and formalities.

Anyone who doesn't like to read will have a very bad time in college!

Of course, now I discovered the GradCafe survey. It's depressing. I see that NYU requested (at least one) interviews back on Jan 10th. I'd love to know which field. The Universtiy of Michigan too.

Brown says they notify students 6 to 8 weeks after the application deadline. The deadline was December 1st, which means we are in the 6-8 week window

I logged into the U-Mich wolverine access yesterday and something looks different. If I remember correctly, the application status used to say "Submitted" somewhere in the jumble that is their system, but now "Submitted" is gone.... Maybe I'm going blind or imagining things.

The University of Michigan does this, and if memory serves me right, so does NYU.

Traditioanlly, when do History applicants start hearing back from the schools? People are already hearing back, but it's been for STEM fields so far.

I had the first one last night. I dreamed that I was invited for an interview at the University of Rochester and loved it there. Everyone seemed to have loved me as well, but then I got rejected. I don't know why precisely Rochester though.

I was a biomed engineering major before I switched to History, and bombed at it. I get it.

That happened to me with the University of Rochester! I should have known though, since their deadline hasn't even come up yet.

I am a generally impatient person, but even though I've checked the status a couple of times, I'm taking this wait surprisingly well. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I am not putting all my hopes and dreams into this application and I do have a solid alternate plan in case I don't get in anywhere. So while I'll certainly be sad and upset if I don't get it, I will not be shattered or lost.

Where did you see that U-Mich. notifies in early January? I haven't heard anything, and I even checked the Wolverine site.

This made me laugh. I had someone who showed quite a bit of interest in my proposed research topic say "I wish you the best of luck, but of course, it is an extremely competitive process." My reaction was the same as yours
