This isn't a beauty contest; what do you actually want to do that isn't the fanciful ravings of a poet?

It all depends - in my mind - on the level of involvement one has in the class. If you're just providing office hours (which is most often the case at the undergraduate level) then get as down and nasty as you want. If you're actually grading exams - just don't do it. Even if you explain the situation to the prof. your TA'ing for, they'll come to their own conclusion about your level of ethical muster (and that it's probably not that great). Academically and professionally it's probably just NOT worth it.

Could be any number of reasons; intentionally blowing you off probably isn't it. I would send a kindly reminder, or if she has a phone call her (enough time has elapsed between email and phone call).

When possible I phone people; email is great for a first contact, but since the email has become a bit more ubiquitous than the phone in dealing with these kinds of issues in academics, it's too easy to ignore or mistakenly pass over. A quickie phone call to her or an admin in her dept. leaving a messag (or inquiring if she is on campus) will do far more to get the result you want.

I'm sorry but that is a load of bullsh*t. Not your demographics - one need only stumble into a computer lab random times during the day to confirm this - but the incredibly faulty connection that "Hey it's full of all dudes. . .definitely has the undercurrent of sexism in it!" - relative or otherwise. This is still academia; unless the OP is going to school in Iran or something gender/racial biases are pretty non-existent.

Jesus. And you're in Social Psychology too. God help us -

As for "insisting" on the department - I was simply curious if the OP would bite. They didn't. Coupled with the previous info, I'm simply leaning more towards "less insidious than a normal person would think - " in terms of the tenor of the conversation the OP heard.

At this point since there is no context or a full quote of what was said, and there being little information about the OP and their cohort itself - I'm agreeing with the above: An innocuous statement that is more a reflection of rudeness/tone-deafness than anything else. Could it be more than that; possibly - but not really able to tell beyond "A member of my department called gays 'fruits'."

I love the subtle (not so subtle?) dig at the US here.

And I agree with the previous poster - they most likely know. But again depending on where you are studying and what, this maybe shouldn't come as a surprise.

That's always the refrain isn't it: can't make your point be accepted as fact, just label the person you disagree with a troll and feign ignorance on how the conversation took a nasty tone. Well done. Round and round she goes.

I'd say "Physician, heal thyself. . ." but that's just too obvious I think -

If you say so. This thread has already derailed enough, no way am I taking this flame bait; least of all your ludicrous chicken sandwich ipso facto argument. . .

Thank goodness there are people who can actually do math in this world who dismiss such outlandish comments without actually doing some research first (population the competition is drawing from, historical proportion of men to women in the field of interest - yanno, the pesky stuff).

If it turns out that this is a significant difference, then yes you can dance a jig at the gender bias (something tells me you haven't done that).

Two people find that comment disgusting (and not simply churlish or immature): you (gee I wonder why) and the tightwad it was directed to. Good game.

Sorry, I was merely addressing personal snark with personal snark. Feel free to continue thread combing for posts to Rep-Bomb. It's a hoot.

You really believe that there is no gender discrimination and no racial discrimination of any kind in academia? Well. You either live in an overly protective environment and are very lucky, or you live in the same world as the rest of us and are very oblivious.

Without seeing the actual letter, I doubt anyone here can say whether your letter was "deceptive" or not. Is the tuition 2200 a semester or year? Is the 5000 for a semester or a year?

As for your teaching duties, leading a discussion session is hardly out of order. You're not actually going to be teaching anything; you're most likely just going to be answering homework questions and administering tests.

These people generally are not out to screw you. Will they require you to fill holes in their lower division schedules for far less than it would take to hire part time faculty - yes. That's to be expected anywhere.

Jesus I don't know how some of you were able to handle college life. This transition is similar to the one you should have experienced when you went from lower division to upper division coursework. The jump will be even steeper, but if you have adequately prepared yourself then all the tools will be there for success. These people do not want you to fail and will do everything they can so that it doesn't happen.

As for whether you can bail out and grab a Masters on them - this should have been something covered during a "getting to know you. . ." session or is something you need to ask your advisor. No one here can answer that for you since no one knows the program you are in.

Sorry if you have severe anxiety issues towards public speaking, but the original poster has noted that they have stood in for professors in the past and he/she is quite outspoken in many social settings and discussions. Your post seemed directed towards the original poster and offered advice of taking anti-anxiety medication, something that I doubt they need when you read their issue (maybe they do, who am I to say, but from the original post it sure doesn't seem like it).

Do some people need to take this type of medication? Possibly, I'm not going to disagree with you there because I don't have enough knowledge to try and argue the facts.

And from my personal standpoint (not directed at you), I don't understand how someone who has an extreme fear of public speaking could become a professor. That's like me saying I want to be a pilot but I'm scared of flying???

Lame. Not everything needs to be solved with medication, especially something as simple as public speaking.

As others have said, just keep practicing. Also, if you know someone in the audience, keep your focus on them and pretend you are speaking to only them. I used to be terrified as a kid of public speaking, it was really bad. I wouldn't say I am the greatest even now, but my job includes speaking in front of groups of clients pretty often and it had definitely improved my public speaking abilities.
