  1. one step ahead of you but I didn't want to invest too much in what I could gather from street-view on gmaps.
  2. I have also been accepted to OSU and most likely will be moving there. I've found what look like decent and affordable apartments in the Discovery District on E Towne Street near Grant and Washington. I'll be out there in a couple of weeks but before I set up an appointment to see the place, I was hoping someone could tell me if this part of downtown is a nice place to live. It seems so close to downtown so I am concerned that the $500 price tag is surprisingly low and perhaps indicative of something that I should be aware of. Any thought?
  3. Did anyone actually get in this year? I only see the 6 rejections posted on the results forum. I guess it's not crazy to believe that those who go invited for an interview are simply not GradCafers (shame!), there are a lot of you out there that mentioned Stanford as one of the schools you applied to so perhaps someone on this forum got some good new? Also, anyone know how many applicants they got? The rejection e-mail said something about record applicants and I'm curious how many that actually means. Thanks!
  4. @ Hannah NYU and any others applying to Boulder... what are you research interests? Who have you mentioned in your personal statements? Feel free to PM me and we can chat a bit more about the program (something I love to do because there are some wonderful people here)!
  5. The only thing I know with any certainty is that the department got 185 (not sure how many of these were M.A. vs. PhD.) applications and will be accepting 4-5 (PhD). I don't know for sure but I'd guess final decisions will be coming out this week.
  6. I saw the e-mail that my friend got following the phone call and they (hisp ling) will reimburse up to $250 for airfare. It's not a lot but it's certainly enough to cover most of the flight for a domestic student. Plus the airport is like 2 miles from downtown which is pretty nifty for such a large city. Hope that helps.
  7. GL - two of my friends have already been offered admission via telephone and will be at the Hisp Ling recruitment day on March 1st. My recruitment weekend for general LING is 2nd-3rd. Hope to see you around then!
  8. I hope you get in to Madison and choose to go there. I LOVE madison so much (did my undergrad there). It is the best small city in America. Good luck!
  9. far as I know... at least me and my three friends were ling and NOT ed ling
  10. Any idea how many applicant Stanford got this year? I'd love to put my rejection into perspective!
  11. Just got my rejection from Stanford (as did 2 other friends of mine). Sounds like they sent out a mass e-mail. Sorry to everyone who got that! Anyone get invited for an interview?
  12. Correct, I know very little about the process. I don't know where the professors are with respect to reviewing apps but I don't think any serious consideration has been given to the lot. I found out yesterday that my internal application was missing recommendations which I promptly got submitted this morning. But given that that was the case, I assume review of apps has not started in earnest. Additionally, I know that we received approximately 80 applications to the PhD program for a total of approximately 5 spots. Since I don't know anything to be true... consider this all speculation!
  13. A friend of mine here in my department got accepted to OSU Hispanic LInguistics a couple weeks ago. He was invited to their recruitment week which will take place on March 1st. Hope your acceptance is on it's way.
  14. I also got my acceptance e-mail at 8:30 pm my time (10:30 pm) schools time. I guess you never know when those profs will send out personalized e-mails. They have their own schedules it would appear.
  15. OSU: Department of Linguistics They made me open the e-mail to see the actual decision. It was good.
  16. I'm glad I started this thread - February 1 was good to me! GL all!
  17. I got my first response/acceptance today! Freaked out cuz I couldnt find my phone to call my mom and tell her... then posted on facebook "NAME OF SCHOOL!!!!" Then i posted on gradcafe!
  18. If you are curious. That's my OSU acceptance! First notification = first acceptance. Hoping this good news continues for me and you all! YAY!
  19. We made it through... now the decisions are really in sight! GL all.
  20. Though I have been a pretty regular visitor to these fora, I've been pretty good about managing my expectations with respect to hearing back from programs... that is until TODAY. Because of some rumor I heard that one of my programs would be making "final decisions" today, I could not help but constantly refresh my email, the online portal and the results page. I guess it's possible that they made decisions and will announce in the next couple of days but darn... today was tough and I can't see it getting any easier until I finally hear. But hey... at least I don't seem to need caffeine anymore!
  21. I think if you get a call from your POI, you could probably not be paranoid. I think grad and undergrad are pretty different beasts all together.
  22. This is my favorite thread in the Waiting it Out section. I've not actually posted on it because, like many people, my confidence in my applications changes with the wind. On my good days I imagine them saying "Oh yes, I remember this guy. He was engaged and thoughtful and his application materials aren't half bad." On my bad days I imagine them saying "Oh... that guy? He was a little hot-headed and I wonder if he has the stamina to complete the PhD" (<-- I DO!). Anyhoo... tomorrow is Monday. The hope returns!
  23. Best advice: RELAX! I applied to three schools. The first two had apps due on December 5th and January 9th respectively. According to past results, invited for interviews for school 1 (Dec 5th) come out about the same time as acceptance/rejection notifications from school 2 (January 9th). So... even though one school's app was due over a month earlier, the other school will have a definitive answer for me likely sooner. So there is probably no real way to answer you question. Instead, just try to relax and let the info come to you when it comes to you.
  24. I had a very similar experience. I was in class and my phone buzzed with THAT area code. I was unable to focus for the next 15 minutes before our break and then I ran out of the class and called the number back... simply a wrong number... it just so happens that one of my POIs likely has an area code the same as mine so any "wrong number" is going to freak me out. It's almost Monday.
