this thread as made me feel slightly better and slightly worse all at the same time. I just want to know now, so I can make arrangements to to build a yurt in the middle of nowhere if i don't get in.
it is not impossible. and dont sell yourself short, it seems like you have some good experience, and that never hurts. Obviously, publications look awesome on a CV, but those can be hard to come by as an undergraduate. I'd say if you have decent letters you have as good a shot as anybody else.

how do plan on getting external funding? I applied for the NSFGRFP, but seeing as how I have not heard back it seems as if I did not get it haha.
oh man, 500 words?! mine is closer to 900 and I was worried it was going to be too short. will they not even read it if it is more than 500? or just stop at 500?
How did you guys find out? I got an e-mail that said they were impressed with my application and that I was an alternate, that my acceptance would be dependent on other people not going to UCLA. they didn't specifically say anything about a "wait list". Have I been thinking I'm on a wait list when I am really not?
