Spinoff: Rejected from PhD, accepted to MA - thoughts/experiences?
contiguous replied to jilly11's topic in Art History
Adding to the love for Williams and Williamstown. I visited when looking at undergraduate schools and although the town is tiny, North Adams with Mass MOCA was amazing (this was around the time of Christoph Buchel's "Training Ground exhibit debacle). I decided not to attend for undergrad, but I've been checking the mail daily with fingers crossed for a MA admit. -
If you're looking for an apartment in Oakland, it might be a little late. Anywhere else, you're probably fine. U Pitt has an office of off-campus living that coordinates students looking for roommates, perhaps CMU has the same? for user_name, definitely look into Bloomfield and Lawrenceville. Brillobox hosts on the rise indie groups, and there is a whole host of experimental/avant-garde music gigs every weekend as well as shows at local bars.

still waiting for letters from Williams and SAIC - anyone have good news from those places?
-
I also received the SAIC email! I thought about emailing the person listed about news of acceptance, but I have a feeling other people might be doing so. I'm hoping this means good news.

Spinoff: Rejected from PhD, accepted to MA - thoughts/experiences?
contiguous replied to jilly11's topic in Art History
There are MA programs with some funding - Williams funds some of their students. UT Austin offers a package that knocks the price in half. I applied to a mixture of MA-only programs and MA-PHd combined. The main problems with IFA for me are - cost of program, cost of living in New York, and also the large size of the program - they admit a LOT of MA students, which often leads to competition and cattiness between students who are struggling to get their professors attention. I feel like IFA MAs are a dime a dozen at NYC institutions, which is why I'm actually more drawn to my other options. -
I am also in this situation with NYU. As much as I would love to attend, with zero funding for MA students it's simply not an offer I can consider especially since I was offered funding elsewhere. I'm curious to see how many NYU admitted though, seems like a lot.

Admitted Student Visits (arranging a separate day to visit)
contiguous replied to kendlaal's topic in Interviews and Visits
I arranged a separate visit at one of my prospective schools in order to make the visit fit with my existing plans to be in the area. I would just say that you're unable to visit on that particular day. I was still able to meet with two professors and lunch with current students -
I interviewed a week or so ago (2/29) for the dual program - they informed me that the Art History program had already made decisions by that point and does not conduct interviews. I asked my interviewer (who was an arts admin prof.) if she had any news or was able to tell me of the Art History dept's decision but she didn't know. Also indicated it would be 2-3 weeks until notification.

Hoping Williams sends out more emails soon, honestly now I just want to know either way!

accepted without an interviews.... it still weirds me out that a program would offer funding to people without speaking with them first!

I can claim today's Bryn Mawr post - after posting about hearing no news, my parents called that the letter had been sent to their house instead of mine. very surprised since all today and yesterday I'd been expecting a rejection. so it's not too late!

has anyone interviewed with SAIC? I have one coming up

arthistoryvoe2 -the weird thing is that the acceptance email never says "PhD". Yet I can't imagine why a school would give a 4 year stipend to a 2-year MA student, unless they're trying to encourage a student to stay for the PhD afterwards.

I just received an email from a school accepting me to a program that includes 4 years of aid, including TAing. The problem is that I applied to the Master's program. Not sure what to do. The email had my name and address, so I feel like it was meant for me, but I didn't apply for a PhD!

seconded. My POIs are Henderson and Shiff and I'd also like to hear about Austin. Evidently there's a recruitment weekend/symposium event in late March

Same situation here - I am starting to hear back from grad programs, my SO didn't get organized in time to apply to grad school so he'll be trying to get a lab/research job in the city where we currently live. My schools are a mix of northeast (where we are now) and midwest. If I end up going to a midwest school, it would hurt both our wallets to continually fly out to see each other. I'm only going for a masters, he intends to apply for PhDs next year....
-
I applied to mostly MA programs and the only one I've heard back from is UT Austin.... waiting on NYU, Williams, SAIC
-
finally received an email admit from my UT Austin POI on Saturday (and the automated email today).... good thing too since I spent Friday bugging out about it!

I applied to the Whitney summer internships last year and was selected for a position (though ultimately did not take it due to a better, paying offer) - you are required to interview in person. The other thing is that you interview with three separate departments while you're in NYC, in a row, plus with the HR manager. The HR woman quizzed me pretty intensely about my coursework, so I'm sure they'll ask about your MA / PhD plans.

Contacting Potential Advisors Before Applying
contiguous replied to news2yous's topic in Applications
My undergraduate advisor, who is the director of graduate studies at my department, recommended that I email POIs to try to set up a time to chat on the phone. I did email some POIs at various schools, though never made it to a phone call. Some didn't response, some were curt, a few were interested in my research. That said, I received my first acceptance via an email from a POI, who referenced our earlier correspondence so it definitely didn't hurt there! -
congrats to the UT Austin MA admits.... sadly my u.texas login still says in review

This wait is killing me. I just want a decision so I need to know if I should start applying to jobs
