Columbia has the better overall CS department but as you mentioned it's all about research and particular advisers. It's also in NYC (better industry links obviously). I heard that Columbia is investing heavily in the Fu Foundation departments to get on par with other top schools, so it's a safer bet.

I applied to (area 2). Will see what comes out soon... So far I haven't had any decisions.

They're not gonna reject/accept you because of 0.02 GPA... Just don't bother.
