I really need to be busy right now so that I'm not thinking about all the schools I haven't heard from, so of course this week is Spring Break (I work at a University). Nothing to do but sit in my office and freak out. At least I'm getting paid. I started the Hunger Games series at work on Tuesday and I'm already on the third book. Headdesk.

I thought I couldn't see my funding because it was NOT listed on the right sidebar like the acceptance letter said it would be. However, I found it myself after a few minutes of looking from the dropdown menu at the top of the page. Just the $4,100 as well. And 20K in direct fed loans. Ew.

How to get the know professors after you graduated?
rose1 replied to pogopuschel's topic in Letters of Recommendation
I remember going to some kind of banquet at the end of my college experience and having several professors I barely knew congratulate me on accomplishments they'd heard about from others in the department. Some even told me they saw pictures of my travels on facebook! Two take-aways: 1. Professors probably remember you better than you think. 2. Be careful what you put on facebook!! -
I turned in my FAFSA by Feb 15 but had to estimate because I didn't have all my tax info yet. i just submitted my taxes today and had to make significant changes to my FAFSA. I've already received one acceptance and I can see my financial aid package online. Will my package be changed to fit my new FAFSA profile? I'm hoping this will result in more funding.

Who else applied for this fellowship? Do you know when we'll get the results?
-
I also haven't seen any rejections. I think they're waiting to release rejections until they have a better idea of how many people will be accepting their initial offers
-
I don't think it's by alphabet - i'm not near the beginning. i think they're just releasing decisions as they make them, which depends on where your application is in the pile, what program, etc. Probably has more to do with when you applied than anything.

Got my first acceptance letter! Admitted to SIS. Very little funding though.

How strict are schools about word count requirements?
rose1 replied to MartianQ's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I don't know about HKS but I remember reading on another top school's website (georgetown?) that people going over would be viewed negatively because "part of grad school is following directions." -
What I love about SIS is that they encourage study abroad, which a lot of the top tier schools don't allow.

hahaha I know schools are trying to be kind and let applicants know that the review process is underway and we haven't been forgotten, but I literally almost have a heart attack every time I see an e-mail in my inbox and so far none of the e-mails have contained ANY new information, except maybe the concrete date (March 19) sent out by Fletcher.

I haven't heard from ANYWHERE yet! This thread is giving me a heart attack. I suppose it's my fault for lurking on a thread called "official admitted thread." Applied: Fletcher, SIPA, SFS, SAIS, SIS

F*$!, I've just found out my application is incomplete!
rose1 replied to Clay Made's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I'm really surprised SAIS said that to you - everyone knew that GRE reporting was going to be delayed this year and most schools have seemed really accomodating about it. I'm sorry that happened. It was totally out of your control :-( -
Legally Proper - how do you already have all those acceptances?

Admission Notification Dates by School?
rose1 replied to sietval's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Dom - at least you were already accepted somewhere! -
Good point about self-reporting vs. the actual GRE report. Thanks!

I was promoted to a more prestigious job title during the application process and happily updated my resume before submission. My employer submitted his recommendation letter before the promotion, and although I'm sure it's a strong letter, I'm pretty sure it lists my previous position. I doubt he mentioned the pending promotion as it came from another boss. Is this going to make me look like I'm lying on my resume or inflating my accomplishments? I think it's too late to contact admissions offices...decisions should be going out soon.

When I took the GRE several years ago, I received a 670 on the verbal section. It's not a great score, but was in the 94th percentile for the year I took the test. While some school asked for both scores and percentiles, others just wanted the scores. Will this hurt me in the admissions process? My GRE scores were not fabulous (710 in math, 4.5 writing), but otherwise I feel my application is very competitive (grades, LORs, SOP, experience, etc.)

I hope you e-mailed the admissions office and had them change it!!...I hate to be a downer but I work for a university and I've heard mentioning other schools by mistake in your SOP is a deal breaker. The absoluteness of your statement is also hard to explain given that the sentence basically said Stanford was your first choice school. It's hard to see how Berkeley AND Stanford could both be your "first" choice.

If you stick to the skills you've gained and speak in a rational way, I can't imagine you'd have any problems. Do you really want to go to a school that would reject you due to your advocacy efforts anyway? On the other hand, I wouldn't go off on a tangent about any radical political beliefs you may hold, but is Occupy really that radical?

SOP typo...what to do?!
rose1 replied to Anne436's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
At the school I work at, they also give both copies to the admissions committee. They don't remove anything from your file - ever. They will just add additional papers, like e-mails you send with updated documents. I'm applying to grad schools and I had a typo on my resume as well. I did contact all the schools to report it because I attributed a publication to the wrong organization by omitting a word. Only one school asked for a revised resume. The rest just said they noted it in my file. I'm sure they just printed out the e-mail and stuck it in my folder. Not one school refused to make changes. -
Masters Before a PhD in International Relations?
rose1 replied to iamdanthemanstan's topic in Applications
I've also been struggling with this. I'm currently applying to Masters programs, but I'm questioning how smart it is to go into so much debt when I could just enter a PhD program with full funding from the start. HOWEVER, It seems like the universities with good PhD programs and funding are different from the schools with top Masters programs. In fact, the Masters programs I'm applying to (Fletcher, SIPA, SFS, SAIS, etc) for the most part don't even allow you to apply for their PhD programs until the second year of your Masters. It really depends on what you want to do with that degree. Personally, I think it makes more sense for me to pursue a Masters, and worry about the PhD later. -
SIPA Masters of International Affairs Economics Requirements
rose1 replied to Hilary89's topic in Applications
Also, I don't know about SIPA, but some of the others schools I'm applying to that are of roughly the same caliber have reassured applicants that community college is a fine place to take extra classes that will boost their chances of admission. They expect people to have full-time jobs and don't have any problem with online classes/community college courses as long as you've already demonstrated your academic abilities with a four-year degree from a decent school.
