New England Nat reacted to junotwest in Results
I received an offer of admission from the Ohio State University this morning!! (I'm the early-bird poster). I'm so thrilled and I feel so incredibly blessed! I'm not religious at all but I will most definitely be in church this Sunday lol! Ten minutes before I checked the website I was telling my roommate about how I should probably go to church soon, and then bam! There's this. Not sure what the forum protocol is but I thought I'd share!

In the long run it's better for you. Imagine what the job market would be like if every professor who wanted to train students would get as many as they wanted.

I'd email the POI with something to the effect of, "Professor X spoke to me and encouraged me to contact you about my interest..."
And than give two or three paragraphs about your interest in that specific program.

BTW, since I've enjoyed being part of this community for a number of years now I'd just like to celebrate.
As of this morning when my dissertation prospectus was signed off... i'm officially ABD. Yay.

New England Nat got a reaction from samsales in Do most programs have newly admitted/prospective student weekends?
Programs that have admitted student days do so before the deadline and most good ones will pay for your travel no matter where you are in the world. Once you are admitted you are no longer trying to sell yourself, but for a brief period they are trying to sell themselves to you.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Papers and books aren't finished, they're abandoned when the writer has to finally walk away.

What a helpful remark, especially coming as it does from someone who posts four times a day.

Finished all my applications last week and I'm glad that process is all over. (Sigh of relief) All the letters have been sent, hopefully the GRE scores made it. Currently I'm an MA student in history at a Big Ten school. I applied to six schools. Hopefully, one lets me in.

New England Nat got a reaction from Riotbeard in Hybrid C.V/Resume
No one expects your CV to be very long at this point. Don't try and pad it. If your work experience is relevant it goes in the SOP.

I would advise that you talk about the intellectual journey you took to the topic you have. Something like "I was studying X and it led me to this and I found it interesting because of Y..."
Obviously more sophisticated in telling. But your interests in a SOP should show your thought processes as much as a project.

New England Nat got a reaction from dr. t in Crucial Theory for Historians
I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned. Bruno Latour is all over history of science, environmental history and history of medicine. I'm not a theory heavy person and I use Latour. But I'm also very fond of Ludwig Fleck, but most of the time when I'm using theory it's about knowledge transfer and how knowledge communities are formed.
