  1. Archives for me - although I'm looking into digital libraries because I am interested in making things more accessible to the public through digitization.
  2. Hi all! Good luck and loads of patience to those who are waiting! I was wondering how did you guys rank your programs? Other than looking at if professors specialize in your field (archives for me) how did you decide what was your top program? Was it based on the professors? The classes? How long the program took? Thanks!
  3. I'm reading (albeit slowly) The Three Musketeer and also a book about the history of cartography.
  4. Tea bags were invented over 2,000 years after the discovery of tea. (It really took that long?) Also - the first legal forward pass in football took place at my current university, Carroll University in Wisconsin.
  5. Well I'll be applying for Fall 2013 but here are my top 10 (I only plan on applying for 7) University of Indiana - Bloomington Indiana University, Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University of Rhode Island Brown University New York University - Long Island University (dual degree) Simmons College University of Maryland Catholic University of America University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill - North Carolina State University (dual degree) University of South Carolina
  6. Thanks everyone! I now have a slightly random question. Of all the apartments you looked at, how many had gas stoves? I'm terrified by gas and would need electric otherwise I wouldn't use the stove at all!
  7. German essay on my perfect partner. And maybe some reading about Social Research methods...
  8. I'm a History major mostly focusing on 1989 European Social history. That being said, my most recent paper I will have written to apply to grad school with is about discourse between Martin Luther and King Henry VIII. Will it hurt me if I'm applying to a MA in History with a paper that is not my field of interest? As a second note, if I'm applying to Public History, can my writing sample really be anything History related? My capstone won't even have been started by the time I'm applying for grad schools (Aber does them second semester) so that will be the most recent paper I have written. The second most recent is a paper about the same length but on that 1989 European Social History. Advice?
  9. Hey all! I'm looking to apply to dual MLIS and Public History programs mostly on the East Coast (with two in Indiana thrown in) and I was wondering: how many programs did you all apply for? I have a list of my top 10 programs but I was thinking of narrowing that down to 7 before applying. I know I won't be able to afford to go to grad school without funding so that's why so many. Anyone have any experience to share?
  10. @Double Shot - I want to be able to not have to drive more than 10-15 minutes for a nice size grocery store. Entertainment I'm not so worried about since I'll have a car and can get away from the city if I want. That, and I'm not a big nightlife person. I do want to be in a relatively "safe" neighborhood since I imagine there will be many a night I'm coming home when it's dark. I also want to have a non-sketchy apartment with laundry facilities somewhere in the building. Parking would be awesome since I'm terrible (read: I basically can't) at parallel parking but I understand that's pretty unreasonable in the city. I've heard College Park apartments - actually the whole Maryland side - are really run down and not very worth living in. Thanks for the help!
  11. I would also mention a sleep disorder. I too, for about 5 years, could sleep 14 hours or sleep 5 and feel the same amount of sleepiness. Turns out I had two different sleep disorders. Finding that out and being treated for those can extremely improve your tiredness.
  12. As an undergrad I only occasionally pick up my final exams. However, I ALWAYS pick up final papers. I plan on publishing so knowing what they said on a final paper is extremely useful. Final exams are... I think they're a good indicator of how you did in the class but, at least for my degree (History) it is not knowledge you will be building on for the next class. The writing skills, maybe. But the professors at my uni very rarely comment on writing skills. *shrugs* I suppose it just depends on the professor and student. Also, I believe it depends on what semester it is. Picking up papers from a final exam in Spring Semester is a very large hassle as opposed to those in Fall Semester. ...And a note about finding out where professor's offices are. It depends on the school. My university is small and there are absolutely no adjunct offices. Therefore you literally have to flag the professor down and get your exam from their house.
  13. Thanks everyone! My undergrad degree will be an Honors History degree so not terribly employable there without a MA. I am leaning towards going straight to grad school because it feels like the right thing to do, but I'm giving myself more time to think about it. I'm a bit of a wishy-washy person on decisions like that. All of you all's advice was helpful!
  14. I'm considering both UMD-College Park and Catholic University of America. I have attempted roommates and it's really... just doesn't work for me. Granted, that was undergrad and we were both living in the same room. I would like a one bedroom or a studio but not sure if I'll be able to afford one. I also will have a car so driving isn't that big of an issue minus parking at College Park is a nightmare (even in the summer when I visited). Any suggestions for neighborhoods? Or better yet, if I wanted a studio somewhat near (less than an hour commute) Catholic or College Park, what would it cost me a month, abouts?
  15. I will be applying to grad school having been to three colleges - one is a community college I took classes at during high school and for some gen eds during the summer, another my main college and the third the university where I am studying abroad. I know I will need to send transcripts from both the community college and my alma mater but my question is about the study abroad school. The program is an exchange so I am still "registered" at my alma mater and they'll go on my transcripts, but the classes will be from University of Aberystwyth and not Carroll University. So... my question is: when applying for grad schools, do I need to get separate transcripts for the study abroad school? Thanks!
  16. So, question for everyone: How did you decide whether you were going to go straight to grad school or take a year (or multiple years) off? And if you did take some time off, what did you do during your time off? I'm considering taking a year off because I would be going into grad school at 20 and I don't want to get burnt out. However, I am afraid I wouldn't be able to find something to do that isn't retail/fast food/restaurant work for that year and I would end up not helping my CV or being bored to tears.
  17. I've been doing research on grad schools for about six months now, on and off, and my biggest frustration has to be the websites. I feel like universities' websites cater to undergrad so to find the one piece of information you need (average GRE scores has been the hardest for me to find), you have to click about 60 freakin' times to find it. It reminds me of JSTOR that if your search words aren't perfect it won't know what you're talking about. Another thing I am extremely annoyed with is the information on dual degree programs. My plan is to get my Masters in Library and Masters in History/Public History. However, when I go to websites that have these programs they say "Oh, well here's information about the Library Science program, now go to the History page for that part of it." It's a never-ending cycle! I swear, grad schools make their websites vague on purpose. If everyone knew what the average funding was (which they definitely publish for undergrad), how the hell dual programs work (can I be enrolled in both programs at once? Or is it like 1.5 years of one, 1.5 years of another?) and what they REALLY want as to applications, the world would be a whole lot easier.
