    Plan B

i'm living my Plan B- running the research dept at a magazine. auditioning for a bluegrass band. drawing a comic book. freelance copyediting. constantly reading religious history. i feel very fortunate to have a full-time, salaried job with benefits, but it's not what i want to do with my life/career. Academia, if God wills it!

  7. i REALLY hope you're right! The assistant dean in my first choice POI just called to tell me that ETS didn't send my GRE scores. Fortunately i had the report with me and was able to fax it right over. She says my application goes into review today...!
  8. This is true. Now to justify the husband's faith...that's going to be the hard part. It's a lot to live up to.
  9. Also my husband's absolute faith, while wonderful, can sometimes wear on me. While i pray to be accepted to a single program, he assumes i'll be causing a bidding war between schools. He even went out and bought me a Nook when i started applying. "Here honey," he said. "You'll need this for textbooks." i just don't share his optimism.
  10. "Also, my grandma, who is super excited about the idea of someone in the family going to grad school ("We've never had a Dr. ___!") keeps trying to "help" me by trying to get me to contact her friends. "Well, I once met the wife of Dr. So-and-so (in completely unrelated field), and I think he's emeritus (she's forgetten he's a little bit deceased)- you HAVE to call him and tell him you know me. He'll get you in!" I love her, but I've given up trying to explain how admissions works, and that art history and phschiatry aren't likely to be done by they same post-emeritus (late) professor." This. My Dad is a prof. emeritus at UW Madison. In agricultural economics. For some reason people think that this fact makes me an 'automatic admission' to religion programs. in Chicago. i somehow doubt those departments communicate very much. i also get the old, "Why didn't you apply to UW Madison? You're a prof's daughter, both your parents went there, you're a LEGACY, they HAVE to let you in!" *facepalm* Tho' my grandparents are very excited about the prospect of a second "Dr. F" in the family. so that's nice.
  11. So happy to flip over the calendar page this morning! Good luck to everyone!
  12. "Oh, I 'm sure they'll just snap you up everywhere!" no help, there. "But...you HAVE a job already. WHY are you going back to school?" (Because, of course, my crappy job in a stultifying industry is exactly where i want to be for the rest of my life.) Or this gem, from my Mom: "Honey, you HAVE a degree. Just settle down, have some kids, and be happy with it."
  13. The title says it all. I've applied to University of Chicago's M.Div program (as well as several others) and their application asked about my race, gender, and religious affiliation. I am female, Native American, and Muslim. I would guess that this combination is rather rare- how much do you think this will affect my application? GPA 3.8 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA in drawing, painting and printmaking, double minor in theology and writing)
