  1. Patient HM: A Story of Memory, Madness, and Family Secrets by Luke Dittrich. I'm deeply interested in the history of medicine and epidemics, so this book was irresistible. It's very well-written, absorbing.
  2. I haven't heard anything about mailing portfolios, only submitting digital images through Slideroom.
  3. Hi! I'm 36, earned my first MA at 32, waiting on replies from several MFA programs. If it helps, my MA cohort included several folks over 30, and a gentleman in his 80s graduated with us.
  4. Haven't heard anything from anyone yet...despite constantly refreshing my email.
  5. Yes! It was incredibly intense, but no regrets. It really helped me focus my research/academic goals, and I left feeling that if I could thrive in MAPH, I could do anything. That is one tough school.
  6. So this is my second time applying for a Master's program, first time applying to the MFA. (I hold a MA from the University of Chicago). Was feeling pretty confident until today, so here I am, to freak out with y'all. Hi! Any other Low-res applicants? ____________ Bard SAIC MECA SCAD SFAI
  7. Antecedant: Yes! Will be diving into MAPH this year and i'm thrilled/terrified. I'm just worried that i'll get overworked- okay, i KNOW i'll get overworked, be honest- and lose the progress i've made. i'm very high-functioning but my post-traumatic stress likes to manifest itself in weird ways when i get overtired/stressed out. Exercise seems an excellent management method, it's just going to be a matter of making time for it. Am immensely glad to be able to leave my soul-sucking corporate job to do this, and the full funding definitely takes the edge off.
  8. So, to revive a dormant topic...for those of you who're plowing through grad school while suffering from PTSD, any advice for someone going into an intense program this fall?
  9. Indeed- i never got the impression that MAPH was for people who are "laid-back." Exactly the opposite. And thank you for the blog link, it's fantastic.
  10. Thank you- reading MAPH student blogs has given me a clearer picture of the workload (cue freakout!) and what's expected. It seems massively compressed- i was warned before i applied that it's "lots of work, lots of pressure." And of course i responded, "Bring it on!" Will probably kick myself for that soon... I'll see what i can find out about other fully-funded admits. I don't know if the funding came from the program itself or from the University. It was phrased as a University scholarship in the letter, and my admit letter from the Divinity School used the same phrasing.
  11. Hi! Accepted into the Humanities dept, will visit campus in April. I live in Chicago, so no weather surprises.
  12. Thank you. I'm definitely a bit astounded. I've accepted the offer for several reasons- because my favorite prof from undergrad is teaching there now (and has been immensely generous with his time and opinions through this process), and because a full scholarship to UChicago simply doesn't fall from the sky. That said, i have no idea how many MAPH admits received full funding. i was not aware that this was something they offered- i was actually told when i applied that "there is no funding."
  13. So it's been a few weeks, and several people from MAPH have been in contact with me to suggest faculty, workshops, etc. It seems like i'm getting one of these emails every day- and it's slightly overwhelming. Is this normal for admitted grads? Do they do this for everyone, or just those they've offered full funding to? Any insights, anyone?
  14. Thanks! I was a bit worried about the "assigned advisors" bit- it seems pretty arbitrary. But seeking out a specific thesis advisor is more in line with what i was expecting to do.
  15. Honestly i had no idea they offered full tuition. I applied because a prof from my undergrad days is at UChicago now, and when i asked him for a LOR, he basically said, "Yes, but only if you apply to my program as well." I'm pretty well convinced that the funding was his doing entirely. If i hadn't gotten the scholarship, i definitely would have taken the Div School's 50% offer. But- a chance to take courses from all over UChicago and not have to pay for it is a blessing, and i couldn't turn it down. i'm a little confused over the preceptors vs advisors system they have set up. can you possibly enlighten me? i'll be attending the campus visit in April but any information would be hugely appreciated.
  16. i've been accepted to the MAPH program with 100% tuition scholarship for 2012-13, but i applied directly to MAPH and to other master's programs, not to any PhD programs. I recognize that i do not have the experience necessary for a PhD program yet. On the advice of a former prof who now works with the MAPH program, i'm using it to polish my research and give me an edge in future PhD applications.
  17. Accepted to UChicago AMRS with 50% funding and MAPH with 100% funding. Wow.
  18. Congrats to you and your family!!!
  19. Thanks for all the congrats, everyone. And also- thanks for keeping me semi-sane during this process. I hope you all have immense good luck with your schools.
  20. Thank you! And the name-admiration is mutual.
  21. The silence was finally broken today. Two admits! My first and second choices- full funding for second choice, 1/2 tuition scholarship for first choice. i am astounded.
  22. Just got my first reply and it's an admit to my second choice program, with full funding. It's Tattoo Time!!!! *falls over*
