Good, I think. I had fun - got to meet other students and had a blast. Back to normal just in time to leave for Minn tomorrow!
-
That sounds like a good sign to me, tbh. I'm exhausted, just got back from my visit weekend and have another one in three days. brb, crashing...

Congrats!!!!

Oh gosh. They also all have vet schools (which is more rare than HDFS, haha). Generally I've seen them tOSU (the Ohio state), OkSU, and OSU. Context is important.
-
If you guys could clarify what OSU you're talking about, I'd love it. xD With two OSUs with HDFS programs, it gets a bit confusing. Finished up most of the shopping for outfits for my first visitation weekend, blech. I hate "dressing up".

I'm not due to hear anything for another month, not until my only (and last) interview. Then again, I said that a bit ago, and was accepted early. So... I just don't even know at this point, haha.

I'd like to be a professor, probably. Wouldn't mind being an Extension faculty. I like her work/life balance (although admittedly, her youngest child is my age and she's only been a professor about 10 years). Research is a passion of mine. Not sure how much I'll like teaching, but I don't think I'll hate it. I think it'll be different when I'm not an undergrad anymore (right now guest-lecturing and the like is a bit awkward because I tend to know quite a few of the students).

I think they're more general. Top program, good program, etc. I've never seen any rank list. I went purely by fit, mostly for that reason, haha.

Psych has its reputation in my HD department for being special (I think the exact phrase was that they follow the beat of their own drums), so it could be that. Plus they tend to have a bit of a different research focus/bias than HDFS. Least at my University.
-
I never heard anything like that, but I think I'm at the biggest/one of the biggest HD department in my state, so that's probably why. HDFS and its approaches work best for what I'm interested in research-wise. I thought I was the only one, so it's awesome to see others who are HDFS too!

Yes. I'll be there for their recruitment/interview/visitation thing coming up. Super excited!

AHHHHHHHHH HOW DID I MISS THIS THREAD Man I've been away too long. Anyways. Uh, I'm a HDFS girl graduating in May with my BA in HD. Applied to four programs. Have been accepted to three, an interview at the fourth. So. It's been a good season for me. (No Penn or Ohio for me. Didn't really see much that went with my interests.) But it's awesome to see other HDFS people!!

One question one of my LOR writers suggested was "If you had to go through your program again, what would you change?"

It's just the 25% for the first year. Sounds like it might be common for social sciences to offer more funding the second year, from a couple of the PhD students I've talked to. I still have two more schools to wait on, so I'm (hopefully) not going to have to worry about it, but we'll see. They're flying us out (500$ worth of travel support) in Feb for a welcome weekend and I'll know more then (and I'll wait to make any type of decision until then too). Thanks, guys.

I just got my second acceptance today...they don't know whether or not they can offer me an assistantship, but I'm still feeling shocked about having two acceptances so far. In theory I'll know from the other two I applied to in mid-Feb (well, an interview for one of them, anyways), although the non-interviewing-one I could literally hear as late as April. While I love the MA/PhD that accepted me, a 25% assistantship (just for the first year) wouldn't cover everything I need it to and I'd be really worried about funding...so I'm hoping that either gets upped or I get full funding at one of the other two schools. I'm guessing because of my bad academic history they want to make sure I can handle the academic load of graduate school before fully funding me. I wish an acceptance was the end of the road, but now I have plenty more to worry about.
-
It's a combined MS/PhD. I'm still waiting on three other schools, but this program is pretty much my top choice of the ones I applied to - however, funding will likely win (if I end up lucky enough to have multiple acceptances). Thanks. That answers quite a few of my questions.
-
So I received my first funding offer today - and it's a 25% assistantship with a 9-month stipend that's not really liveable (about $740 a month or so). 50% off resident tuition, etc. I'm not super enthusiastic, but I could (in theory) make it work month to month with some small loans and an outside job, potentially work study. My bigger question - once you're admitted and have done well for a year, do they normally offer you a bigger assistantship? I don't really know how that works. I know the 25% was guaranteed, and they aren't giving out final assignments until they know how many students in the cohort, etc - but is it possible the 25% could go up, or since it's guaranteed, it won't change? I don't really know much about this at all. A bit disappointed, but I think I'd be allright if I absolutely had to be with it.
-
Do you know what a decent price for rent would be? I was accepted to U of Minn with a rather small stipend (25% assistantship) and am doing some research into whether or not I could make it work.

Congrats!!!

The downside to getting into graduate school..... My mother is suddenly an expert in all things grad school. This is going to be a long six+ months, trying to explain to her that she doesn't know what she thinks she does...
-
Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
nohika replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
Now that I've /been/ accepted, my (crazy) mother is trying to spout words of wisdom, etcetc. I've finally told her that she has no idea what she's talking about and to please stop. She gets all offended (as one would) and is trying to convince me she knows about how to handle TA/RAship awards, etcetc. She does know more about housing switching and whatnot, but she's trying to pressure me to live on campus (would rather not) and just in general being annoying. I need funding to go to school, so while an acceptance is great, I need to know about funding before getting /too/ excited. -
I phrased my SoP more like "I believe Professor (X)'s interests in x as demonstrated by paper(s) a, b, c match my interests because of y." To show that you've done research on the professors, you know what their recent papers were on, etc. I don't know if that's standard though, but I've got an acceptance and my SoP readers (mostly professors) liked it.

I spent yesterday eating ice cream and checking my email every hour to make sure the email was still there. I am beyond excited and the first words out of my mentor's mouth was "OH MY GOD!" so she's excited too. Can't wait to see her on Monday (and to see the rest of the professors and tell them, because I've only told a handful). We're still waiting on the official letter to find out more details and stuff, but the lady that contacted me was one of my POIs and I definitely plan to get in contact with her about her research at some point because it was very interesting. As for the whole email thing - I actually got the email an hour after it was sent because I was watching TV with my sister and not checking my phone/computer. Go figure, right? Thank you guys!!!! I am so excited to see the next step begin (although absolutely terrified) and I can't wait for the rest of you to get accepted too!!

I just got an acceptance from one of my four programs yesterday. But that's the first I've heard from them, and I still haven't heard anything from the other three...
