@mandarin.orange, if you'll just be writing about your field and your work, it could be an advantage to identify yourself. Creating an online presence could help in terms of getting your name and your work out there. If, however, you'll also be writing about more personal things, you may want some anonymity. I think that only purely professional blogs would benefit from identification.

I spend $40-$50 per week on groceries; budgeting for $50 but always aiming for $40. I grocery shop once a week and make weekly meal plans. Having meals planned out in advance makes it easier for me to use up everything so none of my lovely produce goes to waste. I go vegetarian one dinner a week and never eat meat with breakfast anyway. My best advice for dining on a budget is doing your research. Check out flyers for stores (especially the loss leaders on the front page), use Pinterest to find recipes, and look for coupons only for products you'll actually eat.

Dressing the Part . . . for Girls!
booksnlooks replied to American in Beijing's topic in Officially Grads
Totally agree about TOMS! Cute, comfy, casual, and the One for One program is great. Also, my orthotics fit! Heads up though - they do stretch out a bit, but that worked out fine for me as I wear sockettes with them anyway. As for bags, I go with a backpack. I know it's not a super professional look but it's good for my back, especially when I spend so much time sitting at a desk. I use a Dakine. Durable, cute, and a fabulous warranty. -
I agree with TheFez. You should take as much math as you can. See if your school offers a fourth year "math for econ students" type of course, particularly one that focuses on optimization. Good luck!

This time last year - What were you doing?
booksnlooks replied to DeeLovely79's topic in Officially Grads
Hmm, this time last year I was working for a non-profit that works with adults with disabilities. I was also researching grad schools and gathering data for my undergrad Honours Research Essay, written that fall. I think it was around this time that I took a quick vacation to visit my grandparents in the east coast of Canada. Wow - can't believe how long ago that was! I really didn't know then where I would be now. I kept changing my mind about which school I wanted the most! -
Setting deadlines for yourself is a great idea but if it isn't working for you, I suggest telling someone the deadlines and getting them to hold you accountable. It could be your supervisor or you could team up with a classmate. Try to find someone who won't let you off the hook - the threat of being chewed out for missing a deadline can be really motivating! As for unstructured time, you could create a daily schedule. Maybe working on specific things at the same time each day will help keep you on task, so getting into a writing mind frame or a reading mind frame (etc) would become habit.

Great to have some more bloggers join us! Question for everyone: who is your favourite grad student blogger? Mine is Martina from The Life Academic (http://thelifeacademic.wordpress.com/). She's really nice, real, and easy to relate to. I also like her fashion sense!

Hi everyone! Here's another thread about this topic: I've been blogging for about a year and it's really helped improve my writing because of all the practice. I've also met some other grad students and been able to learn from them and share info with them - it's a great community!

Try ordering online through a store that you have in your town as well as in your new town, so you can check everything out before you order it. Win-win!

Dal PhDer makes some great points and I'd like to add one important thing: don't let this person damage your self-esteem, happiness, and health. Your supervisor's opinion is important but it's not the only opinion on the strength of your writing and research. You are absolutely worthy of graduate school! You got in, didn't you? And you've made it this far! I completely understand how upsetting this situation is but don't let it ruin things for you. Don't give up! I recommend that you not only take care of the issues with your supervisor, but you also take care of yourself. Get plenty of sleep, exercise, healthy food, and sunlight. Spend time with people you love and who support you. Spend time each day doing something that makes you feel amazing. And, if need be, check out your school's counselling services for someone to talk to and make constructive plans with. Good luck!!

Jargon & Acronym Dictionary - for grad life and forums
booksnlooks replied to SeriousSillyPutty's topic in Officially Grads
So glad this thread is here!! Can someone please explain what/who a PI is? -
I got mine when my acceptance was no longer conditional, as I had to wait until I got a student number to set up my email account. I've already received a summer newsletter from the grad student society. It's nice to feel part of the community already!

I've been working on a get fit plan so I'll have a routine in place by the time Sept rolls around. I've been doing 2 days strength training, 2 days cardio, and 2 days yoga. For weights and cardio, I've been using the P90 program and I love it! I was originally going to start P90X with the boyfriend but I have no arm strength so I couldn't get past the fit test haha so getting to P90X is my new goal!

PHD applications after only four months of master's...
booksnlooks replied to canteaus's topic in Officially Grads
I'm in the same situation as canteaus, just in economics instead of history. First off, thanks to those who gave advice - huge help! Could someone please give more advice regarding conferences? I'd like to start building up my CV but I don't know the first thing about how to present at a conference or anything related to the process. -
I think this is a great idea! A friend of mine recently finished his PhD and that was his big advice: meet up with your classmates at least once a week to grab a drink, hang out, and chat. He said it made all the difference because it made for a friendly atmosphere in the department and also people were able to help each other through the tough times.

I recommend talking to the grad supervisor in your dept about this question because it can differ based on your program or school. I had the same question and, upon asking my grad supervisor, found out that the major paper was the better route for me. In my program, the only people who do a thesis are the ones whose employers are paying for the degree and require it.

@nomadic_joe Those are nice places! A friend of mine lived in an apartment on Elgin and enjoyed it - she lived there for 3 years. I recommend using Google Maps to sort out how easy/hard it will be to get to campus from there. You'll probably have to walk a bit before catching the bus (either route 4 or 7). As far as I know, that area isn't a hot spot for students for you might have an easier time getting a place.

I went to Carleton for my undergrad and loved it there! A lot of leases around Carleton start in May so people often look pretty early but I'm sure there are still plenty of options. I lived in residence each year and enjoyed it. Grad students live in Leeds House, which has 4-bedroom apartments with 2 bathrooms and a kitchenette (stove top and full-sized fridge but no oven). You also have the option of getting a meal plan but it's not mandatory. As for apartments, there are several options along Bronson Ave, Prince of Wales Dr, and Alta Vista & Smyth. The first two are within walking distance and all are along bus routes (although POW buses don't run to Carleton on weekends). Housing options are typically found in the POW/Dynes area and Sunnyside Ave (Sunnyside is super close to campus).

*sigh* Unsuccessful. Congrats to everyone who was successful! Do you have any tips? I'll be applying again next year.

Recommendation Letters - Post-Acceptance Dilemma
booksnlooks replied to canteaus's topic in Officially Grads
I agree with SeriousSillyPutty, especially when it comes to thanking them and following up. I'd also like to add that this is part of a prof's job - just one of the many administrative duties they carry out each year. You're not being a burden. -
That's a really good sign!! I'm definitely going to keep myself busy so I don't just check 100 times a day. Good luck everyone
