  1. But... Pittsburgh sucks compared to the Bay Area. And I go to CMU
  2. You can do ML without coding. Don't take the internship unless you need money. Doing pure math research is fine.
  3. Your GPA is too low
  4. CMU, UT Austin, and Washington do not do interviews. They send out acceptances directly in the last week of January/first week of February.
  5. Unfortunately, yes. There are way too many people applying to artificial intelligence and machine learning these days.
  6. Verbal score is way too low. They expect 155+ from international students. Also you don't have any publications
  7. Nearly 0% chance since you have no research experience. At the top 4 schools, you are competing with undergrads and Masters students who have published in NIPS, KDD, CVPR, etc. A PhD is a research job. Not having research will hurt you immensely.
  8. GPA and GRE are too low
  9. The higher the CS ranking of a university, the harder it will be to gain admission. Overall ranking has little to do for top CS department admissions. For example, CMU.
  10. Yes. Depends on how efficiently you work.
  11. Nice mix of money and interesting problems. It's hard to say no to a $150k/year salary in industry while working on cutting edge problems
  12. Pick one: One first author poster or oral in the top conferences in your field 2-3 second or third author posters or orals in the top conferences in your field
  13. I'm doing a PhD with zero interest in academia.
  14. For people reading this in the future, acceptances go out in January.
  15. It doesn't matter if it is just slightly better or 1000x times better. The max is the max and will be selected each time.
  16. Go to Stanford. I know people who picked Stanford MS (fully funded) over offers from MIT PhD. From what I've heard, it's extremely easy to get a RAship at Stanford as a MS student.
  17. If your Master's GPA is less than your undergrad GPA you are in big trouble. Invest your time in research. That's your only hope now
  18. Pretty much all SCS departments have sent out PhD acceptances by now
  19. Try one course. See how it goes. How can you say it's a losing battle if you haven't even fought the first battle?
  20. I know several people who chose Stanford Masters programs over a PhD at a top 10 school in their respective fields solely because of the Stanford name.
  21. Hopefully he went to CMU
