Does pure math research help CS PhD admission chances?
Icydubloon replied to ksa's topic in Computer Science
You can do ML without coding. Don't take the internship unless you need money. Doing pure math research is fine. -
Yes, OR is fine for ML/AI.

Your GPA is too low

CMU, UT Austin, and Washington do not do interviews. They send out acceptances directly in the last week of January/first week of February.
-
Unfortunately, yes. There are way too many people applying to artificial intelligence and machine learning these days.
-
Verbal score is way too low. They expect 155+ from international students. Also you don't have any publications

GPA is too low -
Nearly 0% chance since you have no research experience. At the top 4 schools, you are competing with undergrads and Masters students who have published in NIPS, KDD, CVPR, etc. A PhD is a research job. Not having research will hurt you immensely.

How high should an electrical engineer aim in CS MS?
Icydubloon replied to ev a.'s topic in Computer Science
The higher the CS ranking of a university, the harder it will be to gain admission. Overall ranking has little to do for top CS department admissions. For example, CMU. -
Can an undergrad manage 6 courses (1 grad) in a term?
Icydubloon replied to ev a.'s topic in Computer Science
Yes. Depends on how efficiently you work. -
What made you choose academia over industry?
Icydubloon replied to D3veate's topic in Computer Science
Nice mix of money and interesting problems. It's hard to say no to a $150k/year salary in industry while working on cutting edge problems -

I'm doing a PhD with zero interest in academia. -
Anyone know if CMU has finished sending out PhD acceptances?
Icydubloon replied to nud's topic in Computer Science
For people reading this in the future, acceptances go out in January. -
Apparently, prestige matters in CS
Icydubloon replied to thissiteispoison's topic in Computer Science
It doesn't matter if it is just slightly better or 1000x times better. The max is the max and will be selected each time. -
If your Master's GPA is less than your undergrad GPA you are in big trouble. Invest your time in research. That's your only hope now

Pretty much all SCS departments have sent out PhD acceptances by now -
Master's in Comp Sci with only MIS undergrad?

Try one course. See how it goes. How can you say it's a losing battle if you haven't even fought the first battle? -
I know several people who chose Stanford Masters programs over a PhD at a top 10 school in their respective fields solely because of the Stanford name.
