  1. Did you call them, RaaR? Just wondering how you got in touch. I'm going to remain hopeful that they come out mid-April, and that they said end of the month so we can't complain if there's a delay!
  2. last year I checked at 12am on the 15th, and it was posted. So, I think OGS is usually right on time.
  3. I'm pretty sure that you need an 80% average or above in order to apply. Unfortunately, even if you're at a 79.9%, they may not accept your application. the OGS website clearly states: "Applicants entering the first or second year of graduate studies at the time of application must have an overall average of at least A-, or the equivalent, on the last 20 one-term/semester courses, or the equivalent, completed. Applicants entering the third year or beyond of graduate studies at the time of application must have an overall average of at least A-, or the equivalent, on all graduate courses completed." Hope this helps to clarify things.

I'm pretty sure they don't see your initial score when it gets to the national competition. This is one of the reasons that people say that external applicants have an advantage: they are only scored once.

I'm in the same situation. I've emailed my program director for advice and will post here when I find anything out. However, I suspect that OGS will let us cancel our scholarship if awarded a SSHRC later. The only reason I assume so, is because when you agree to accept OGS you also have to agree to inform them if you receive another award. I tried calling the number given to us on the OGS acceptance letter, but she's out of the office until Wednesday.

For all those who are wait-listed like myself, I have some good information about the process. I emailed SSHRC to find out what, exactly, it means and here was their response. As you can see, there's still a glimmer of hope. "Good morning, When applicants apply to a committee in the Doctoral Awards program (National competition), their applications are forwarded randomly to one of the committee's sub-groups (the number of sub-groups varies by committee and depends on the volume of applications received by the committee). Each sub-group is assigned three committee members (normally from different research backgrounds) that evaluate, score and rank all applications in their assigned sub-group. The success rate in the competition remains the same across all committees and their respective sub-groups. Your place on the waiting list is determined by your score within your sub-group. If an award recipient in your sub-group declines their award, we will proceed through the list in rank order. Please note, that there will be allot of movement on the recommended but not funded lists this summer. SSHRC plans to let applicants know their final decisions by August 2009. Thank you very much for your patience with this matter and good luck in this year's competition"

Could PhD students please post here when they get their official SHHRC letters? I'm anxious to see mine, since I was informed that I was recommended but not funded; I would like to know exactly what this means in terms of being waitlisted ( a small chance, but worth waiting for).

Does anyone know what it means to be 'recommended but not funded'? Does this put you automatically on the reversion list (in case others choose not to take up their award?)

Snasser: doesn't 'recommended but not funded' place you on the reversion list?

Has anyone at York University heard from FGS or their department?

Congrats to all you MA folk who were successful. For the rest of us doctoral applicants, hopefully we get good news next week!

I vote for option 2 as well..... The wait has been so long that the possibility of extra money is more important. By the way, has anyone considered the possibility that SSHRC is SAYING results won't be mailed until May because they want us to stop calling them in the meantime?

is it even possible for the website to be updated on a saturday? I assumed that no government employee would be working on the weekend!

Almost 100% sure that this isn't the case. I know people who were awarded both and had to choose between the two (most choose SSHRC, of course). That's why there's a reversion list for OGS, in case someone turns it down to get the SSHRC (or decides not to go to grad school at all, I suppose)

poli-phil, Sorry to hear about OGS, but being A-listed for SSHRC gives you great chances of getting it! Did your school email you about the results? I just checked the OGS website and mine are not posted.

so, we're likely to get OGS results via the website, and only get the formal letter later?

Thanks everyone.... Guess I'll get back to checking the mailbox twice a day.....

Should we really be looking in the mail? Do you think that, for those of us who applied through our departments, that we'd hear it from them via email or word-of-mouth before getting a snail-mail letter?

ugh... now I am anxious too. Playing the Beatles' "Mailman..... Bring me no more blues"
