Hey, GradCafe-ers! I'm currently in my second year at Ohio State in the MA/PhD program (I study queer theory, LGBT lit/pop culture, and the Gothic). I haven't been on here since my app season in 2013, but I know that our DGS (Aman, who is awesome) started contacting those accepted recently and I figured I would stop by to offer myself as a resource if you have any questions! Just heard from Dr. Amanpal Garcha. I got in! A fellowship nomination as well. He told me to expect a call with details on Saturday.

Toasterazzi, I wrote to him at 12:45 am Columbus time, and he replied in four minutes!

Seriously! And yet he is ALWAYS cheerful. It baffles my mind!

Conversely, he called me at like 9:50am, right before I was about to go teach haha. I sometimes wonder when that man actually sleeps...

Thanks for the offer! I have a friend specializing in early modern at OSU, so he's mostly given me the skinny on the department and Columbus. But I'll be sure to PM you if questions arise!

Hello!  I've been a lurker for a while, but I figured it was time to come forward.  
 
I'm applying this cycle to mostly political theory, but also a few rhetoric programs.  My background is in jurisprudence and social and political thought.  I've loved reading about your interests and application dramas over the last few months. 
 
It's going to be hard (in the best case scenario of acceptances, obviously!) to choose between the two.  It may come down to a sense of belonging.  For example, y'all use more gifs than the friends over in the political science forum, which I have to say is a major draw...
 

Just got my Ohio State admission notice as well!

Very first notification was an acceptance!!!! Considering the shut out that was my last application cycle, this is a huge relief!

I wanted to share my second PhD acceptance this weekend with you all. I'm very grateful to have heard back already from two very strong programs that are also great research fits. Again, I applied to both English and Am. studies programs, so I think they have different timelines.

I'm actually somewhat speechless at this point.

This doesn't have much to do with anything application-wise, but I found out yesterday that I'll be getting an academic paper published. I've had lots of poetry published in the past bunch of years, but this will be my first academic paper, so I'm pretty happy about it. What's funny is that I sent it out for publication within around 48 hours of having written it. I was quite happy with how it turned out, so I'm particularly glad to see it get picked up by my school's journal of comparative humanities. It may not have the most cache, but hey...it's an academic publication!

This is my TOP school. Fingers crossed, you guys!

I know everybody's anxious about the acceptances right now, and I don't know if this info will help or make it worse lol. At any rate, for anybody that applied to Ohio State, I went back through some of my records and found that I saw that I was accepted on the website on January 23rd last year (I'm not sure how long the info had been up. I just found it in one of my random visits to the site), and I got the official acceptance phone call on January 27th. So it's entirely possible that you all will hear from them in the next week or so.
 
(I'll also add that some people were notified way later, but most of the people were contacted around the same time I was as far as I know.)

While of course I'd like to think I'm super-duper special, it's probably not the case. I am, however, that Tuesday Urbana English admit! Ah! So excited!
 
I'd been avoiding the fora since December to try to maintain a bit of calmness and detachment--which, surprisingly, works; I've gone whole days without thinking about my applications or graduate school, which I wouldn't have thought possible. But I sure as hell didn't think I'd hear from a program this soon!

Let me poop some truth on you.

Even if you don't get a tenure track job at Columbia. An ivy league will. Will. Help you get a job at Melbourne or Berlin or Penguin or Verso or some other fucking corner of the world where they pay a decent amount of money to talk Marlowe.

So suck it up. And realize that brand name does have value.

And if God forbid. You end up having kids and a partner that loves going to the spa every fucking 9th weekend. You will still fucking need an income to pay for that bs. So here's the cold damn truth -- money matters. Reputation matters. And even if you don't end up teaching. You could make a living as an editor or an administrator. And pay the bills.

Sorry that reality doesn't sound like a Stoppard show.

But here's the truth -- if you got bills to pay, where you come from has significant fucking bearing on where you end up.

Canterbury, you say? I'm sure you'll have lots of TALES to tell!
