I think some people can stay up all night to study, and some can't. I'm the second kind. What I usually end up doing is going to bed as early as I can (maybe only work until 11) and then waking up at 5 or 6 and working. Sleeping a little bit helps to calm me down, and any anxiety that has built up usually dissipates even if it's only by a bit! I would say try to do a little more work now then let yourself rest for a few hours and pick it up early in the morning. All nighters have never, ever worked for me (I don't even try anymore). Best of luck! you can do it

I haven't been looking at campus housing, from what I've read in this topic it's really best to live off campus if you go to SFU. I'll probably start looking for somewhere more seriously in July/August (depending on when I want to move)

What is your stipend and how do you make it work?
bedmas replied to Biostat_Assistant_Prof's topic in The Lobby
Mine will be about $13000/year after tuition (Masters' program), and I'll be moving out for the first time, to the most expensive city in Canada... we'll see how I manage -
Canadian schools typically fund their masters students, if that's an option for you. The funding packages I've seen for compsci masters programs are very generous.

April is so late! SFU was my top choice and the first one I heard from, so that made things a lottt easier. I heard from them at the end of February, maybe send them an email and ask when you can expect a decision? When I had questions I emailed their graduate secretary, who always replied really quickly & was very helpful

There was a topic a few weeks (months?) ago comparing various apps/websites people use to keep track of their personal finances (mint.com, etc). I seem incapable of using the search function, but I've been looking for way too long and just can't find it. If anyone knows where that topic was, do you mind linking it here? Thanks!

How bad it is to live in a very cold place?
bedmas replied to khaled's question in Questions and Answers
I've lived in a pretty cold city my entire life (gets to around -40 some days in the winter), and it only really sucks if you have a long commute. i'm an indoor person so i spend most of my time, well, indoors, but waiting for/being on freezing transit upwards of 2 hours a day is a killer. -
Vancouver's definitely great for that which I'm looking forward to! Especially considering I'm moving from the land of Alberta beef.

I'll be attending SFU in the fall and it looks like I'm going to be very, very poor after tuition. I guess I'll have to live with roommates which I don't mind, but I'm looking for cheap rent, other female students, plus who don't eat meat... is this wishful thinking? Craigslist and Kijiji aren't much help.

Decline UVic's offer, accepted SFU's, and withdrew my application from Manitoba! I guess this mean's it's official.
-
I'm the exact same right now! I got into my dream school, the funding is great, the fit is perfect, the opportunities are abundant, etc, etc, but I'm so scared to click accept. The emails I got from another was school was so nice and I feel bad saying no! bah. Edit: It actually worked out that all of my POIs at other schools got their PhDs from my top choice/the one that I'll be attending, instead of theirs. Surely they'll understand why I'm choosing it, haha!

I'm pretty surprised by the short deadline for accepting Canadian offers! SFU gave me 21 days, and UVic only gave 13. The UVic offer won't expire after 13 days, but the funding offer will. I guess this isn't something to complain about, but I'm just surprised.

Congrats!! I got an (informal) acceptance from UVic yesterday too (or... I guess today at 1am), a professor in the department emailed me that I'd been recommended to be accepted into the Master's with full funding! I don't think I'll be accepting this offer, but the email was very, very nice. I also basically emailed the graduate secretary at SFU yesterday and was like "so... I really want to accept this offer, but am I supposed to... hear from someone in the department, or something...?"
-
Do you mind if I ask when your application was due/when you got accepted? I have another offer that I want to accept but I'm not sure if Manitoba will let me know soon, or if I should just withdraw my application.
-
my manitoba app is the exact same way! and i got an email from them saying it was complete once it had been marked complete for weeks and had already said "complete department review" for a while... glad it's not just me!
-
I saw someone get accepted into the Masters a few weeks back in the results, but I haven't seen phd yet! I hear UBC is notoriously slow?
-
i got my offer from SFU on monday and they gave me 3 weeks to accept/decline (i will be accepting), but i still haven't heard anything from the actual department...

I think it depends so much on the program. I'm in Calgary and my program here is NOT good, but some of the programs are really great.

Oh, my mistake! Regular classes will start on the 9th, then. U of C is one of the few (if not the only?) universities that does block week courses. Essentially, they offer certain classes (NOT core degree classes) that are taught 9-5 for 5 days, and you get credit for a full semester course. I would guess you won't have any block week classes. From what I've seen, it's random a lot of random film studies courses that are good for people who need more credits but don't want to take 6 classes in a semester, haha.
-
U of C usually starts right after labour day. Looks like that'll be September 3rd this year (from here).

I got my first decision today... it was an acceptance to my top choice (and the only one i actually wanted to attend). beyond ecstatic, and i've been happy crying/on the verge of happy crying for the past 7 hours!
-
congrats! and holy late, u of t. for those of you who got into SFU - have you heard from your departments? i got an email/letter from graduate studies, but i'm not sure if my dep't will contact me as well.
