Fall 2013 English Lit Applicants
practical cat replied to harvardlonghorn's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Michigan's visit weekend is March 20-22 so they conceivably have a little time (but not a ton) to get back. -

Thanks eigen. If anyone is unaware, gradcafe does offer the option of blocking posts/some interactions from other users. My gc life has improved exponentially since I started to use that feature. I can't stop someone from targeting me (and I'm sure I have signed on to another week or so of reputation bombing, profile visiting, and nasty messaging just by posting this) but I don't have to listen to it. - infj, who believes that most people are actually pretty wonderful -

Sorry for the down vote but I was kind of overcome by my love of cats. I can't say it was mature but I'm not sure I regret it that much. Cats forever. Edit: and, um, congrats sebsteddy! I've been rooting for you pretty hard! Glad something good happened! -

Love hearing from you, fiona thunderpaws. Your triumph over the UT wait list is easily my favorite moment from last year (and is especially heartening to me this year) and I'm glad to see you so happy with your program. -

I hadn't been planning on it but if you do, I know there are other people here who would like to hear what's up. -
Valentine's Day Massacre
practical cat replied to ishmael's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Minus the fallen at CUNY (condolences), this day has not been nearly as brutal as I anticipated. It's still early though, plenty of time for more broken hearts. I'm going to guess Michigan is NOT notifying today. May I be (once again) wrong about them. -

Are you trying to tell me that they're not as obsessed with me as I am them? Do you think standing outside their window with a boom box will help??? -

I'm hoping the official rejections hold off just a while longer. If I am getting an acceptance this year, I would prefer it to happen before the official rejections. -

Congrats on today's acceptances (so far?)! -

I think there's a pretty traditional Valentine's Day massacre so maybe all of the schools are planning on doing that this year? -

I'm alright. My implicit rejection from Berkeley on Friday reduced me to a self-pitying mess which thank god I did not document here in real time. Berkeley was one of my two worst fits and I have NO desire to live in California so I am still kind of surprised it hit me so hard. I think The Vanderbilt Situation had me feeling kind of weird (it was one of my top three so the days following the Vanderbilt blood bath were really tough on me emotionally) but I think I have entirely recovered from both of those situations. I have easily been more stressed/less confident in my life. -

I thought they were done a week ago but I think it's for real this time. -

I made a Gertrude Stein! Congrats again, Keely and good luck on the decisions. -

That's probably actually true in this case. -

My heart has grown three sizes larger. Anytime I can be mentioned in the same sentence as She's All That is a true honor. That's probably my most-referenced movie moment. I'm going to have to read that. I didn't end up working as closely with "Men seldom make passes / At girls who wear glasses" in my undergrad thesis as I would've liked but I would be surprised if it didn't play a central role in whatever I do going forward. lovelovelove -

Congrats, Keely. And have I told you how I love your picture? Marilyn Monroe reading Ulysses is one of the best images to come out of the 20th century. -
How snobbish are the Ivys???
practical cat replied to Marie-Luise's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I get you. I just find that saying "no" to the original question asked by StephD way back to be just as problematic. With my "necessarily," I believe I acknowledged the slippery "biology" of various gender identities. I don't think "male" and "female" are helpful or even interesting categories which is why I challenged the use of "male privilege" in the first place. I absolutely, 100% get what you're saying, I just think these are important things to continue discussing with the best language possible which is why I'm clarifying now. I am really, truly enjoying reading this thread and I love how respectful and thoughtful it has been. -

When I say trans-man, I mean ftm. And, yeah. What you said. I think the term "male privilege" is quite meaningless (and maybe even actively harmful) outside the bounds of an exclusively cis-heteronormative community. -

LOLing forever, thank you. -

They don't necessarily have male privilege as it is privilege associated with biology, which is what the question asked. I believe that I explicitly stated that trans-men are men. Gender/sex privilege is a complicated and interesting topic within the queer community, yes. Editing because I reread and saw I definitely was using some maybe-slippery language in my original post. I say "identify as men" as entirely synonymous with but more accurate than "are men." Sorry if that read as problematic because I didn't specify the bounds of my terms! -

Trans-men for example. People who are not male but identify as men. -

Your thoughtful, careful responses have been particularly appreciated, rems. (I ran out of up votes in the acceptance freak out thread... Again.) -

I deleted my post because I anticipated an outrageous response from donthate. Sorry I wasn't fast enough. -
