  1. This is a great list! I wouldn't have much to add, but these are things you may want to take into consideration, depending on your circumstances:

    1. Research: What is their research output? Are students putting out first author publications, or are they more in a supportive role? Quality of publications (e..g where they are publishing) is obviously important too.

    2. Grant Support: Being able to secure your own funding is important if you want to go into academia. Do the faculty hold workshops? How big of a push is there for you to try and secure your own grant funding? This, coupled with research are practical skills that are going to be crucial for a job in academia.

    3. Proximity to Air Travel: If you're far from family, or just want to be able to travel with ease, take nearby airports into consideration. How much are flights out of those airports to the locations you would be frequenting the most? If you're in a smaller/more remote town, cost of air travel goes up by multiple hours and hundreds of dollars!

    4. Health: I can't stress this enough. We are all going to be in mid to late twenties, and probably in our thirties by the time we are done with a PhD program. This is about the time when health issues start developing/revealing themselves. Make sure your funding covers health insurance, and make sure you have great health insurance. Also, make sure you have a competent and reputable hospital nearby. You don't want to have health issues during your program and receive mediocre treatment that will lead to complications down the road (this almost cost me my life, fyi).

Probably should have asked before I sent it, but I just emailed my POI at one of my accepted schools to ask about funding decisions as at the time of my acceptance three weeks ago the committee hadn't met yet. My main goal was to feel out if they had met since then and if there was some kind of timeline I could expect in hearing from them. Was this a huge mistake/example of poor etiquette? I don't think I came across as impatient or begging for funding, I just wanted to clarify what I could expect moving forward in the process.

I don't think so! It is completely fair to ask for clarification, as usually this is the deciding factor for students as to whether they accept an offer or not.

Congrats! It seems like a good program. Who is your POI, if you don’t mind me asking?

Im applying for the MA program. I didn’t read too much into the follow up email. Although it said we would receive acceptance letters from someone, I didn’t take it as I got accepted. Still staying positive though!

    I PMed you :)

I applied to UWF as well. Still haven’t heard anything.

I’m still waiting on: UWF, USF, LSU, UPitt, U-Amherst, and CSU-Chico.

I already got rejected from UC-Boulder. I wasn’t a good fit there and it was a stretch to try to fit my interests with theirs so it was expected.

I haven’t seen anyone that has been accepted to any of those schools yet aside from one at LSU. Speaking of which, did anyone that applied to LSU get a weird acceptance email? I got two of the same emails from the department and it started with Congratulations and I was accepted so my heart stopped for a second but as I kept reading, the email didn’t make sense (bad wording, wrong dates, grammar mistakes, etc) and it was obviously was an error. A follow up email from someone in the department 5 minutes after apologized for the email going out and that it was a glitch in the system.

I was the LSU acceptance! I also got that weird e-mail today, but they told me that my acceptance letter would come from someone else. So not sure what the deal was, or what that means for you. Did you apply for an MA or PhD?

I’m freaking out. I only applied to two masters programs, and haven’t heard anything from either (and one is where I’m finishing my undergrad). I have professors and friends who are grad students who keep telling me that it’s good I haven’t heard anything because rejections come out first. But it’s really disheartening that I haven’t heard anything. I want to be hopeful that my professors are being upbeat, since they’re the ones reviewing my app here (UIowa) but at the same time, I just want to hear something!! I keep checking my email, hoping I’ll see anything from UIowa or UW Madison.

Master's programs typically release results after PhD programs, so don't worry yet! When I applied for my Master's, I didn't receive an acceptance until mid march. :)

  6. Are you applying for MA or PhD programs?

My best advice is to try and find a few specific areas of research you're interested in within those broad interests, and then find articles regarding those areas. Who is publishing those articles? Look at the professors recently publishing in those areas and find out what schools they are at, and if the schools offer graduate programs. It's much easier to find schools that way.

Others in this forum may have similar interests and may be able to direct you to a few programs!

I know this may be a little late to you but there are programs to help first generation college students also low income families such as the Mcnair scholarship http://mcnair.ucsb.edu/ .

Usually other first generation college students know others so if you know of anybody that is first generation and want to help send them to the link above. It is one that I wish I knew about before it was to late

WOW. I wish I had known about this when I was in undergrad..........

That is what I thought. I talked with the graduate secretary, and their spring break is this upcoming Monday so that is probably putting them a week behind as well.

So, my POI just e-mailed me and said that their offers fro candidates would be going out in the next week or so. Are the offices open for spring break??

  9. So, I'm waiting to hear back on funding from a school, but I have a question about worst case scenario: If a PhD program is unfunded, do you still get a tuition waiver, or do you literally have to pay for everything like an undergraduate degree?

MMHMM YUP I AM. I can't finish my term because my POI wants me to come on fieldwork this summer, so I wanted to let my bosses know so they won't be sad/angry/surprised when I only can do 8 months. BUT they decided instead that since I can't do 12, they'll cut their losses and fire me after 4. So like...that's fun. I've...definitely worked in better work environments.

Wowwwww, I am so sorry. Hopefully this doesn’t put you in a bind too much :(

But screw it! Get a jump start on all of that PhD stuff and have fun with it! More time to plan and scope out housing.

haha psa maybe don't be nice and tell your bosses you got into grad school and are going on fieldwork this summer cause they may FIRE YOU IMMEDIATELY. this is fun this is fine yay

Holy crap, that’s awful. Aren’t you doing Americorps right now???

It sounds like that’s somewhere you don’t need to work anyways if that is the reaction of your boss...
