  1. Go to a less prestigious school that provides biomed training where grad placements are usually low tier medical schools in anatomy depts with high salaries (80-90k annually)?

Or go to a higher ranked school in the same subfield that does not offer biomed training, but grad placement is at "better ranked" schools in anthropology depts with lower pay (50-60k annually)?

FYI: This is for physical anthropology, and I would be happy in either subfield.

I have a question about the experience I've had thus far with a program I applied to.

Before I applied to the program, I sent an email to the POI. They never responded. Still, I decided to continue with the application. After submission, I played the waiting game and assumed that perhaps my application would be rejected. Well, I've finally heard from one of the professors from the department. They have expressed interest in my research ideas and wanted to know if i'd like to be nominated for a fellowship. The original POI I contacted wants to nominate me though they never responded to my email. Of course I agreed!! But I'm still wondering about my status. They did not say whether or not I was accepted or rejected.  Has anyone else had an experience similar to this?

If you've been nominated for a fellowship, you've been accepted. Congrats!

    • Not even wait-listed... pffftt, admission decisions are whacky things, don't be disheartened everyone else who was rejected! I have been accepted into the Cambridge Anth PhD program, so obviously being rejected from one particular school says nothing about your calibre. I guess I didn't suck enough proff. ass at Michigan :-P But it's a great program, super congrats to everyone who got in!! :-)

    • Very lame rejection "statement"...not even a letter. Don't understand why they force us to create a "friend" account just to sign in and tell us we were not admitted? At any rate best to those who got in, it is definitely a strong department, albeit a little too wishy-washy pseudo marxist-cu* rich professor thing going on, but hey seems to be the trend lately. To all who didn't get in: don't give up on academics, understanding, and truth. Standards are most definitely declining everywhere and often these decisions are politically motivated coming from weak professors who are in fear of being sued, or accused of being racists, rather than giving genuine authentic decisions...what a sad state of affairs. Best to all who didn't get in as well, for God's sake try another uni next year!
  4. So, I called my school this morning regarding application status, and the grad secretary told me they haven't made any decisions yet. She encouraged me to reach out directly to my POIs and reiterate my interest in the program. Should I do that? Also, what do I even say? I don't want to come off as pestering, but this program is one of my top choices....

    Hello all,

In going through the interview/admission process, I keep going back to this question. For anthropology, how much do rankings matter and/or predict securing a permanent position after graduation?

Well, it depends on if you're trying to go into academia, or the private sector. Also, are you trying to get a tenure track position at a high ranked school post doc? If that's the case, then ranking does matter for us, unfortunately. That's not to say you can't do it, but having a degree from a high ranked school will make the search much easier.

Honestly, focus on finding the school with the best fit for you, and be outstanding. That's going to look much more favorably in the long run than doing mediocre at a better ranked school.

  6. I'm literally losing my mind. I cannot stop checking my e-mail. then grad portals. then grad cafe. repeat all day. I was doing so well at being balanced, but I just caved in and don't want to stop until I receive some sort of notification D:

I also now really hate weekends, mourn fridays, and can't wait until monday.

    Anyone feeling the stir crazy?

The anthropology departments are pure torture, since they send out notifications for different sub-disciplines at different times. Apparently, they like to save biological anthropology for last.

    Hello!

Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted or had interviews so far! I'm a pretty solidly arch/bioarch person, but I'm a little bit concerned that I've so far had radio silence from the schools I've applied to, especially those due in December.

Has anyone heard anything about UT Knoxville or University of South Carolina? Those were my reach schools for sure, and because they're such big programs I figured they'd be all over the results threads if anyone heard anything but I wasn't sure! Just got an email about more assistantship opportunities at UTK and wondered if anyone had heard anything else!

    I haven't heard anything from UTK :/

  8. @indigopierogy I kind of see what you’re saying, but am a little confused. Are you saying that you’re interested in sociocultural anth, but can’t find POI’s doing research on white supremacist orgs? Or that you’re wanting to do something with white supremacist orgs and geography?

Regarding prestige, LSU is definitely a recognizable name, but there aren’t really much in the way of official rankings for anthropology. It also depends on the subfield. And your advisor.

for the record, I also applied to the program at LSU :)
