  1. I wouldn't change much about the POI but I would emphasize the different elements of the two programs and how each would benefit me and how I might fit into each.
  2. What? I thought Goodacre didn't believe in Q.
  3. Yeah, man. Don't mishear me. I wasn't trying to say you were wrong. I think you're right. The way I read you, you were just reporting what other professors had said, who might have also just been reporting to you the way they perceive the academic world to work. I just think that the pattern of using fully-fundedness as a hiring criterion is wrong-headed.
  4. That is a really fucked-up barometer for judging programs. I think you're right, that it's definitely a rubric that many people use, but somebody please tell me I'm not alone in thinking that dollars and cents are not really that great of an indicator for one's education, ability, and expertise. "Hmm...yes, this candidate holds the PhD and passed his defense with distinction...but he didn't turn a profit from his studies, so...."
  5. I had POIs tell me that it doesn't matter. But I didn't apply to any top-tier schools, so take that as you will. I do think, however, that it would really be only in the most unlikely of circumstances that your math score would be the thing that got you into--or kept you out of--any program in RELG. So -- study hard, but if/when you have to cut something in your GRE preparations as the date approaches, cut math and focus on the other stuff. Edit: I decided it's probably unhelpful to tell you not to worry too much about the quant. Study your ass off, prepare for success, etc. I'm just saying, if there are other weak spots in your application, make sure to prioritize those when push comes to shove because those will likely be more important.
  6. That said, he was my favorite theorist that I had to read in my Theories & Methods course last year.
  7. Sometimes I am relatively sure that my grad student peers think JZ Smith is the fourth member of the trinity (even if they're atheists).
  8. Because your application fee spends just as well either way?
  9. Although, in fairness, so am I. I got my thesis through inspection and it clocked in at 99 pages. I look at it now and could easily edit it down to 60 or 70.
  10. Yeah. Mdiv guy up there is an outlier.
  11. Toss an app to Iliff. Not only does it participate in its own joint PhD (ahem), I know that Iliff has a strong record of sending their best M* students on to other PhD programs as well.
  12. Yeah--that thread will probably answer all (or at least most) of your questions.
  13. It's not like they're going to call the cops.
  14. Best of luck. If you have any questions that a current student might be able to answer, shoot me a PM. I am in the Biblical Interp track (NT/Early Xty).
  15. Take your mind off the agony by picking up one of these books: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aag/main/ref=olp_merch_name_1?ie=UTF8&asin=9004234764&isAmazonFulfilled=0&seller=ANWWW1OM2PADZ
  16. I hated it when schools asked that question. It's thoroughly unfair. But, for what it's worth, I was honest in answering it.
  17. I'm sorry, I meant "If I were you, I would ask Vial about it." So, you should email him.
  18. Sounds like something you could get away with in the joint program at University of Denver and Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO. I'd contact Ted Vial and ask him about it.
  19. No matter what anyone tells you, you're going to hope to receive word early. I started a codependent relationship with my inbox the day after submitting PhD apps.
  20. Now I'm curious. Why would it be preferable? Time commitment?
