  1. Hey Guys, I recently just graduated this May with my BA in History. My cumulative GPA was a 3.38 and bad grades while I was a journalism major bought my GPA down. My senior year though I got a 3.7 and 3.8, respectively, and Dean's List twice. My junior year at my degree granting I got a 2.8 GPA (Journalism semester) and a 3.2 GPA thereafter. Before going to my degree granting university I received a cumulative GPA of 3.41 at a community college where I was a journalism major. I am also a part of Phi Alpha Theta (History Honors Society). What are my chances of getting into a Doctoral program?

  3. I agree I have the same issues too. I work a full time job and can't afford to do everything that would make my application look great.Having to work full time has also hurt my grades in some areas because of the cumbersome daily schedule I have.

  6. Sigaba, Thanks, now that I think it about it, that is actually a good way to look at things. It could be an advantage I haven't noticed before.
  7. Well do you guys think my Journalism grades will be factored in at all?

  9. Thanks guys! But do any of you know how grad schools view grades after you have changed your major? For example I used to be a Journalism major, then I changed my major to Africana Studies half way through my junior year. How will adcoms view my GPA?
  10. I graduated with Honors from the community college I went to
  11. I already have an AA.I'm going into my senior year at a university.
  12. My scores were much lower on the real test, than the Powerprep software. Mostly because I was so nervous on the real test, and had a couple of issues going on in my personal life that made me uncomfortable. I plan to take it in August with a more calm head.
  13. I'm applying to African-American Studies programs. Just finished taking my GRE; how do you guys like the programs at your respective schools?
  14. Hey guys, I am trying to get into an African History PhD. The problem I have is I only got a 3.2 GPA this past Spring semester as an Africana Studies major, which I just recently switched too and created myself.. The semester(F/2011) before that I was a Broadcast Journalism major and only got a 2.8 GPA. Prior to attending the university I go to now, I was at a community college, and majoring in journalism where I got a: 3.1,3.3,3.5, and 3.6 GPA respectively. I also recently took the GRE where I got a 148 V/142 Q/3.5 W. I can get some really good LORs as I'm close with my school's Provost. I'm also really close with a lot of professors who have already expressed how much they would like to write LORs for me. I also plan to take the GRE again in August and hope to improve my scores. One the reasons why my GPA hasn't been as high as I'd like, is because I work a full time job on an overnight shift, and I go to school full time. Therefore, I haven't been able to do the type of work I know I'm capable of, and I haven't been able to do a lot of extra-curricular activities because of work. Before going to school I was also in the U.S. Navy, in both Active and Reserve components. Honestly, what are my chances of getting into an African History PhD program for Fall 2013?
  15. I'm also going into my senior of college. Two more semester of hope!
