  1. Hi guys, I am applying for a MS interdisciplinary program housed in Engineering with a non-engineering background (targeted for non). On the website it states that I need a supervisor before I apply however I need to know which supervisors are taking students but the information on which supervisors are open is not listed on the website. I emailed them to say what do I need to do to find out which supervisors are open and they told me that there is no need to select one, however it will help evaluate me faster and if I don't have one, during the evaluation process if they consider my application, they will attempt to find a supervisor for me. Now I am thinking should I just contact the people I want to work with anyway? Cause it's probably competitive and who will have time to attempt to help me by then. Any advice on how to navigate this without being shutdown by potential supervisors as a nuisance? The information part is the website encourages us to contact co-supervisors of the supervisors and I am like how...so most of the tips seem geared toward current students.
  2. Hi all, If anyone applied for, has done or is regretting this degree please PM me ASAP, thanks!

  4. http://www.humanworkplace.com/whats-pain-letter/ Read the comments below that article too. I would also take a elements from the traditional cover letter, relaying why you are interested in the company apart from improving the bottom line/ processes, why you will be a good fit etc. All the best
  5. Hey, Few tips.. I may go off trail but I understand your fear! I strongly advise that you read up on networking and take advantage of the free offers on professional networking sites. You can join a group on LinkedIn for researchers. Then you post an introduction on the group make sure you go for the groups with 4000+ members with frequent conversations, I have a template for an intro PM if you want it. People will point you in the right direction. I don't apply for jobs I am qualified for and those are the jobs I ALWAYS get interviews for, half the time I don't understand the job description. It's detrimental because I am usually the only person under 30 and have lost out , but it improves my interviewing skills and confidence. I want a job that will push me to grow and usually they offer support.. those job descriptions are often inflated, dunno..Do free courses to improve your skills, be good at what you say you are good at. When you apply for a job on the black-hole system make sure that you send the hiring manager (google/ L-IN) an email detailing why you are the best candidate. Just applying on a system is a WASTE of time, you will get 1 or 2 replies for every 50 apps. Go onto social media and start replying to target company posts...then contact the poster to tell you about their experience working there and if they reply, ask more questions and start talking about your previous research experience. Search for conferences! If it's affordable, go! All the best
  6. It's wasn't, it was hosted by the biggest association in my field. I have been crying tears of blood seeing the pictures and discussions online

  10. Oxford because I love everything that is English! I saw this on LinkedIn: "The best education is the one you can afford" , it spoke volumes to me. However I would take a a million dollar loan to go to Harvard without blinking so... look at where alumni from those programs are right now professionally, that should help. Rooting for Oxford \o/, hope they give you a good package, all the best with your decision.
  11. Spunky, I checked, its the biggest professional organization in my field and it will be like an all star weekend for the people making strides in the field or practice heads from companies like IBM,SAP I fear that most people will just shake my hand, pat my back and then it ends there...that would be okay if I was working full time! However...
  12. Hi all! I am thinking of attending a conference for professionals in my field. It will run over 3 days and costs just over $2000. I just got a quote for half the price (yay?). I am currently underemployed and the networking opportunities could help me land my dream job! I have never attended a conference before, those who have, may you please chime in with your experiences on networking and whether it helped or not? Or anyone with thoughts on this...do not want to drop $1K for nothing, thanks!

  21. Hi all, Got advice from an expert to remove everything I achieved during my undergrad and grad year like fellowship, deans merit list, awards, community involvement, GPA (3.8) and just leave work related stuff and what I studied. For those searching for jobs/ who have, is this advisable? competition is cut throat for jobs..and I always had the understanding that they look for candidates beyond academics...please chime in
  22. I didn't even look at your scores really, I went straight to the experience part and it seems like you have it. NO those Uni's are not higher than your credentials, I actually thought you had Harvard, Duke, Stanford etc listed when I rechecked. You will get into one of those schools...Just don't jinx it by over-thinking! Apply and forget- then get surprised! Best wishes! Stay Hopeful
