    GEM Fellowship

So I did not get the GEM fellow however my school awarded me the GEM associate Fellow. according the the letter they would pay for my tuition and give me a stipend for one year. Questions 1. Does anybody know how the GEM associate fellow works 2. Will this stipend be on top of what the NSF is paying me?
  2. I have identified the reasons why I failed to get an A in both classes and will work on them. Sadly my adviser kicked me out of his lab yesterday. He said that he does not believe that I am a great fit for his lab, which is pretty big ( about 30 graduate students). He said that I might do better in a small lab and I believe him, I felt really lost with very little support from anybody in the lab. Getting into the lab is very hard, you have to apply to his lab directly and then you get admitted to the school ( he has a lot of influence). Because of that, I did not bother to look at what other researchers were doing in my department. after spending a lot of time yesterday, i could not find anybody in my department who is doing the type of research i want to do. Now what? 1. Find a lab that would take me even though I have no interest in there research 2. Find a job as a Lab technician 3. start studying for the MCAT and go to medical school
  3. Long story short. Last semester I took two classes and received a C and B-. The C was from my PI's class who was very disappointed in me. I was put on academic probation and was told that I must have an overall GPA of 3.0 of better and not get any grades below a B. This semester I got two B's so my current GPA is a 2.72. This morning, I received an e-mail from my adviser saying that he is very disappointed again that I did not get out of academic probation. I also received an F which I am hoping will turn into a W. I received this F because I forgot to drop a class. I did not go to that class at all because I thought i had dropped it before the class even started. The only thing that is going well in my life right now is that I received the NSF fellowship. so now am waiting to receive a letter from the deans office telling me that i have been kicked out of the program. what to do? Can i ask them to give me another chance and if they do how can i convince my PI to let me stay in his lab and continue my research. should I even go to lab and do my research? what are my options? stories of people who overcome this is welcome.
  4. I recently learned that some university will give students money or a bonus for bringing in outside funds such as NSF. Is that true and if so, how much does your university gives you?
  5. Got the fellowship it been a rough first year in grad school for me. I was so ready to quit two days ago but now i can stay. This is a great confident booster. my reviews were: E/E VG/E E/VG
  6. how to you check the comments for your essays?
  7. 29 people viewing/reading this thread. Glad i am not the only one.
  8. I am a first year graduate student and i just realize that I don't read any particular journals. Now I am in the process of deciding what journals. How many journals do you subscribe to? what are they? how often to you read them?
  9. Hello guys, It's recruitment weekend and I am hosting some of the recruits sadly i am currently questioning why i decided to go to grad school. so to help me dust off my gloomy attitude as well as other people who are struggling right now. Drop a phrase. why did u decided to go to grad school and why have you stayed?
  10. its better that you withdraw from the class that fail it. you cannot retake classes at my school and replace to replace a lower grade. you can however get a W remove from your transcript. I wish i had withdrawn from a class like that last semester. Even if you want to go to academia, they will not check your transcript, they will care more about your research ideas and your ability to obtain grants. One of my labmates just withdraw from a class after being sick for one week.

    Master's to Ph.D

that depends on where your name appears on the publications. If you are the first author on the papers then you do not need to do a the thesis options since your position in the paper will be able to communicate strongly that you can write. if you are second or lower then doing the thesis option would be better. it also depends on the ranking of the schools you plan to apply to. if they are top 20 then a thesis would make your applications stronger.
  13. its almost a 3/4 done with my first year and I have learned the following and in my early 20's 1. Its not about being innately smart, but how much time your are willing to put in to learn something. I used to give up pretty easily on problems set on the account that i was not " smart enough". Now i see that the "smart" people put in crazy amount of time studying. 2. asking for help is not a sign of stupidity/ignorance. I am still not comfortable to ask for help but i am considering it more when I get stuck in my class work or research 3. I am more "humbled"; nothing like failed experiment to bring your to your knees everyday. overall, I am liking the change. I can see myself becoming more and more of the person of my dreams.
  14. agree with him, go to Texas A&M. overall rank of the university is better than NCSU.
  15. please share your two cents on this topic. what is it like to be a black female in the STEM field? any pros or cons? things you wish you could change and see more of. My university has this new initiative to attract more minorities ( specifically black females) to the university. however some of the ones here are leaving the university to teach at historically black institutions ( HBCU's). all opinions are welcome ( its not a black or woman thing).
  16. totally agree with what everybody has said, most westerners view living at home with your parents as a regression and not an opportunity to save money while helping your parents are the same time. I am currently living with my parents, not because I cannot afford to live on my own, but because its cheaper. They have a spare bedroom with its own bath and its own entry way so why pay somebody $700.000 of more each month. I am however planning on moving out after this academic yr ends in order to get more freedom and would be more secure in myself since i now have emergency money for myself and have help my parents for one yr by paying some of the bills. Take this time that you will live with your parents to: 1. save money 2. find good roommates whom you might want to move in with when you are ready to move out 3. help your parents pay their bills ( once you have family or bills of your own, this will be difficult) 4. take time to define who you are and whom you would like to date and settle down with someday. ( living at home has forced me to have platonic relationships, which is great since i can now figure out who is really interested in who i am) 5. show your parents that four yrs of college really change you for the better ( you should be more responsible, etc) 6. cultivate a different type of relationship with your parents ( I think of my parents more like wise friends and they think of me more like a a friend who can use good advice)
  17. set up an hour meeting with her to just talk about your proposal. That way she will give you feed back and know that your are serious. some people are so busy that they keep putting things off for later. also ask her in person is she is willing/can write you a strong letter of rec. if not start finding other people

    GEM Fellowship

I was not selected. Hopefully other fellowships come through for me.
  19. Does your current school have a microbiology program, if so you can switch departments without switching schools. that way your classes would still count towards your degree ( my school does not care what classes we take).
  20. *hugs, comfort food, long run in the woods, chocolate, umbrella and rain boots for this rainy day* what ever you need. is the master program DGS different from the PhD program DGS? is so you need to talk to the master program whom might have some ideas on where you can find funding ir help you with the application process. also talk to your current DGS and see if he can help you find a different advisor to work for or even talk to the PI whose lab you are in now. For recommendations in the future, you can always get one of the professor who taught you. you have a year to cultivate those relationships so that you may get strong letters of recs. lastly, do not lose sight of what you want to do. Its always better to follow your dreams that to go through the motion of things. good luck.
  21. I agree, you should not stay in a program that is not going to contribute in your edification as a person.
  22. what are five things that you want to do before getting your PhD? mine are: 1. academic- publish 4 papers 2. social: make at least four lasting friends and g o to sky diving, madi grass etc 3. emotional- learn to love whole heatedly ( even if i get hurt at the end) 4. physical: run a marathon ( in the process, loose 40 lbs) 5. Faith- read the entire bible from cover to cover.
  23. I was thinking about doing this, except i want to switch to biomedical engineering. I affiliated into an BME lab and currently taking a lot f classes in BME to help me do my research. The PI who i work for is also the current DGS of BME. I havent moved forward with this because i do not know if i could get into the BME program. our BME program is currently racked in the top 5 while the chem dept. is ranked 45ish. please update if you decided to switch?
  24. SOP=personal statement or statement of purpose. you seem to have a sort at those schools however you should still apply to other schools ' safety schools'. I applied to some of the same schoosl you listed and had the same credentials and got in at Duke. I got rejected from Harvard and later learn that it is nearly impossible to get into those schools unless you have somebody from that school write you a letter of recommendation.
