greatleap Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 GorillaGirl: I applied to Media Studies and Academic/Research Track Journalism (master's) programs at UW-Madison, Syracuse, Indiana-Bloomington, Michigan State, Univ. Missouri, Univ. Minnesota & UNC-Chapel Hill. What about you? Pinecones: I don't know anything specific to Pittsburgh, but it seems that master's program acceptances are running a couple of weeks to a month behind PhD acceptances. UNC-Chapel Hill sent out PhD offers at the end of February, but won't make all of the master's decisions until "later this month." Hope that helps - if even a little!
pinecones Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Thanks, greatleap. It supports what I was thinking/hoping. (I know UTAustin did the same thing, as well.)
jhubanks Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Hey all, I'm brand new here. I'm about to finish up my undergrad in political communication at a public university on the west coast. I'm interested in graduate study in either political communication, political rhetoric or something media studies-related. Other than Northwestern and the other usual suspects already mentioned in this thread, are there any other schools I should be investigating? I'd like to pursue as "top" of a program as possible. Any and all advice would be much appreciated! Many thanks in advance! Josh
GorillaGirl Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 The University of Oklahoma has a pretty good Political Rhetoric program - that is most likely where I will be this fall.
comm Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Has any one heard anything formal from Northwestern with Communication Studies PhD? I know we have had an unofficial results posting of a denial a little while ago, but anything "formal" yet? Thanks!!
CopperBoom Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 As far as I know, they only accepted 4 people. This year is very hard, i believe for all schools
comm Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 I did see that in the "results"...but it stated that it was unoffical notice from a contact w/in the dept. I was just wondering if anyone has actually received a FORMAL acceptance or a formal denial? I'm probably just jumping the gun...but I want my formal denial (I am assuming) just so I can move on with other decisions, ha. As far as I know, they only accepted 4 people. highered_3 Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Hey all! I just joined this forum, although I obsessively check the results/admission status section of the site like...multiple times a day. Anyway glad to see there is a thread for us comm/journalism types! I applied to MS/MA journalism programs at Columbia, Northwestern, Syracuse, USC and Boston U. This past week was nuts for me, as I found out I got into Northwestern, Syracuse AND BU, so now I'm just waiting on Columbia and USC. I applied for the arts journalism programs at Syracuse and USC, and everything else was print journalism (I'll be concentrating in magazines). Anyone else apply to any of those programs in particular?

I'm the one who posted about the department contact, but here's the deal. As we all know you HAVE to get a Fellowship in order to attend NU's graduate schools. If you were contacted for a fellowship interview in February, then there's a chance you will be offered a spot. If not, then you most likely one will not be offered to you. I believe they will send out formal rejections via the website at the end of March once they've solidified their 4 candidates.
yay Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Any word from UMass Amherst Ph.D? I still haven't heard a thing. Have all the acceptances gone out before their spring break, or are they still making decisions? Any info would be appreciated-
flygrrl Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I was admitted to Wisconsin-Madison, but they claim to have not yet made financial assistance decisions? Has anyone accepted there been offered a fellowship yet? If UNC-Chapel Hill is having a welcome event this Thursday, should I assume rejection if I haven't heard anything? Has anyone applied to University of Colorado-Boulder and heard anything? Thanks!

Has anyone applied to University of Colorado-Boulder and heard anything? Thanks! flygrrl - I was admitted to UW-Madison as well. When I got the formal (hard copy) letter it specified that financial aid decisions had been made and most of their aid went to returning and PhD students. It's not clear if you are applying for PhD or MA programs, so I don't know if this helps. I haven't heard anything about UNC Chapel Hill - how do you know about the welcome event? I think I remember reading something on the forums somewhere about a UNC event, but I understood it was for PhD applicants (again, that may matter to you as a PhD applicant, but if you are applying for the MA, it's not much help). I'd love to hear an admissions decision from UNC so I can move forward with the decision-making process on my end ...
flygrrl Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I'm a Masters applicant, with intent to pursue Ph.D.. Well I called UNC and they said they are just now winding down the decision process and will send out notifications end of March/early April. I also called Wisonsin-Madison. She said they haven't completed financial assistance decisions but will soon. She expects to send out word in the next week or two.
DART Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Waiting to hear back from Columbia j-school - applied to the M.S. program - newspaper concentration. I can't wait another week!

Any info would be appreciated- Yay; i believe you asked this question. i believe UMass Amherst already sent out their initial offers and waiting feedback from those applicants to notify the ones on the waiting list. They haven't notifyied me but I called to find out. They are in fact nice, so I suggest that email to Dr. Carbough. He does respond within 5-6 hours

Did you receive the formal hard copy letter? I think I got it early last week, and it definitely made it sound like funding decisions had been made. It offered nothing particular to me or my circumstances but seemed to make more of a blanket statement of the chances of funding for MA students being nonexistent. I guess I'll assume no funding for me, but hold out some hope that what I saw in the letter wasn't definite/everything there is to know. UNC slow pokes!
yay Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Thanks copperboom. I didn't know about the waiting list. Last time I called they sounded a bit annoyed, so I hesitated to contact again.

I totally understand. I'm in agony over the wait. I'm sure I'll be rejected, but I still just want to get it over with and know for sure!!!
pikatopia Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 RE UNC-CH...the Communication department and the Journalism/Mass Comm department are different. I don't know about the Journalism dept, but the actual Communication department IS holding their Welcome Weekend starting this Thursday, with events running through late Saturday morning. Chapel Hill seems to send all notifications via Postal Mail - I was notified around Feb 22nd. About UMASS - Carbaugh is away on his Spring Break this week and will not have frequent email contact. I don't know if Kathy Ready is in her office at all (she is the Grad Program Secretary) this week, but it may be more pragmatic to contact her.
CopperBoom Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I sincerely hope that the applicants notify the schools of their decisions soon, so that the ones waitlisted won't develop further stress related symptoms (i.e., ulcer, anxiety). Seriously, if you know (for sure) you won't go to X school, please let them know so that they can notify the applicants who are waitlisted and currently aging from waiting  .

I think that anyone going through this process knows how completely agonizing it is and isn't PURPOSELY just sitting on an acceptance to drive others mad. Personally, I'm taking my time because it is a really big decision. I have 3 programs left to visit and since they have been at the top of my list since the very beginning of this process for me - I intend to do as much thorough research on them as I can. (And for the record, I turned down one of the places that I have already visited because I knew it wasn't the right match.)
CopperBoom Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Wickedcurves: I am a HUGE Gilmore Girls fan and yes, that is why Copperboom :)
CopperBoom Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 pikatopia: I am aware how agonizing the process is. Seems like you already withdrew your application from where you decided not to go and that is what I am talking about, so you did well
Cmere Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Who else is going to admissions "weekend" for Northwestern's Journalism program? Send me a message so we can create a group and meet up before hand.
